That said, I have to say that the extras that Criterion created for their laserdisc and DVD editions were actually worth watching. And maybe even more than once, but I'm not planning to test that theory.

Criterion's first laserdisc was Citizen Kane; it's last was Armageddon. I've always maintained that that is the perfect example to illustrate the phrase "from the sublime to the ridiculous".

I don't know if I said this already but there's a very high chance that The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled will has a good chance getting a Criterion release.

[Show spoiler]The previous Blu-rays for both of them have gone OOP lately and The Killer (1989) already got a new restoration that was shown at the Hawaiian Film Festival last year. However, there are no reviews on this new restoration so it's a little fishy and muddy on whether or not it's going to be great and perfect. So it might be here but if it doesn't come for a long time, I probably wouldn't be surprised but I hope both films comes ASAP!

Hard Boiled, on the other hand, has a decent Japanese Blu-ray that went OOP years ago but the restoration for this looks way more cleaner but has a very strong yellow hue to it. This yellow hue does appear in the Criterion version but Dragon Dynasty Blu-ray and DVD both use a blue-ish hue to match the hospital. However, I find the blue hue to be incorrect because the hospital was on lockdown and when the hospital went on lockdown, all the light turned off and the emergency lights which are naturally warm came on. So when the hospital action scenes, like the one shot hospital sequence for example, goes on, the color may be inaccurate and the Criterion version seems to be having a warmer color from what I see. Yet, the yellow hue does appear in scenes that aren't in the hospital so I also have some doubts and a little bit of questioning about it (warehouse and opening scenes for example). Still, I find the warm hue to be looking more nicer for my eyes (I love warm colors so that's just a personal preference) but it looks a lot like a L'Immagine Ritrovata restoration (Which is always controversial) so that may throw off some people. But the last two blu-ray releases (Japanese Blu-ray and the 2018 Mei Ah) use this hue. And they both suffer compression issues I believe. If the color is tuned down a little, translations from the Mei Ah release is fixed, and the compression issue is solved perhaps, then this film would be the best release in terms of video. Just hope they bring back the old supplements and mix it in with newer supplements and perhaps get a new 5.1 surround track that is included with the original monoaural track. And maybe even a Fortune Star or fanmade resound for this film would be nice as I love the resounds for this movie on YouTube.

I don't see any other company like Kino for example taking it. But, this movie may go to Arrow Video since they normally release cult films but they haven't released any Hong Kong films yet soo that may not happen unless if those two films become their first Hong Kong films to be released from them.

In the end, these two are my favorite movies and I would love to see them come back in print with better A/V quality and given the same treatment as the Jackie Chan films. I think companies have finally learned how to restore Hong Kong films for real now!

I don’t understand the emphasis on yellow in the Bruce Lee boxset art.

I’m sure there’s some thematic and/or historical relevance to it.

...but I don’t particularly like it.

I would prefer yellow as well. Particularly during very dark scenes where the bright white subtitles can often drown the scene out with glare. Yellow is much less invasive.

Yellow subtitles are fine by me. For the past 6 years, I have been watching all my movies with subtitles if there are any (Evil Dead II was a film I watched recently but it didn't have any subtitles ) And because I always have subtitles on, I'm perfectly fine with yellow subtitles but all I care about for the subtitles is that it's big enough because when I play videos that I downloaded with an .srt file attached to it, the subtitles are small and look really blocky and not like 1080p sharp.

As a deaf person who relies on the English subtitles, I can say that I prefer the white subtitles. Occasionally, meaning rarely, the white subtitles are difficult to read with a B&W film. But that is a rarity. I do not like yellow subtitles with a B&W or color TV shows/movies.

Normally if my subtitles are bold or has a black outline around the white subtitle are my favorite types of subtitles. I don't often see yellow subtitles in movies but a good example of a yellow subtitle use was in Inglourious Basterds (2009) but the subtitle font and text size on that is not traditional. But since most movies nowadays use the white subtitles since most people read books with black text and white paper unless if you are reading a children's book with weird text colors and font sizes, so I think it would make sense that psychologically people are used to white subtitles for most films because white stands out more with black outline than yellow could. Most movies nowadays are in color so it stands out but yellow subtitles in B&W movies are more safer unless if the white subtitles have the black outline. Some films don't have that and the white subtitles get lost in the scenes where the screen goes white from a flash bang or a transitioning scene.

My Opinion: White Subtitles with Black Outline are good for Color and most B&W movies. Yellow Subtitles are Better in B&W Movies if you can handle the color yellow.

I know the flash sale for this year probably won't happen until later this year but when the flash sale goes on. I want to know a few titles that have little to no supplements in there that cost the usual $40. Examples like: Rififi, Sword of Doom, and The Magician.

My plan is to buy films that have little to no supplements and buy some of them using my $10 discount that all of those who have subscribed to Criterion newspaper from March 2020 or April 2020 have gotten. I want to use this $10 on a movie that's great but one without any good supplements and is overpriced just for one or two supplements.

What are some Criterion movies that you can think of that has little to no supplements?
