No, the film was licensed from KG Productions, not Paramount. So some rights dispute may be why it has gone OOP, as the other title licensed from KG Productions is still in print.

[Show spoiler]
I can't remember why but I can answer when: Exactly two summers ago, in July 2018.

It went OOP conveniently in the middle of the B&N Criterion sale, so I grabbed a copy then.

I was really hoping to pick up War Of The Worlds but no luck. I still got some good films though:

I remember watching Gloria at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood.
The kid's performance was so bad and annoying that when I got
home I wanted to punch my little brother who was about the same
age as the kid actor.

Default Criterion Channel on Chromebooks

The Criterion Channel now works on Chromebooks, finally, after a year and a half. The boggling and nonsensical "external monitor" error is now a thing of the past. Not sure when it started working, just that it is.

Yeah, I hate how quickly some movies disappear. Really wish Criterion would negotiate longer engagements.

Anyway, I hope you were able to watch My Own Private Idaho in time. I'd be curious to hear what you thought of it.

Wow, some harsh critics in this thread.

The kid was not a great actor, but I blame the character being annoying on the writing - none of his dialogue would've sounded natural coming out of the mouth of even the greatest 6-8-year-old child actor.

[Show spoiler]How's your little brother doing now after enduring what sounds like a rough childhood?

Same, I'm disappointed it left so early as I have to watch movies I don't feel like watching. Basically forces me to watch movies I'm not in the mood in.

I thought it was an interesting film at first. I loved the abstract and bizarre aspect of it. It's almost, dare I say, Lynchian in a way where it feels like a dream (But not a nightmare). I enjoyed this film but that ending
[Show spoiler]broke me inside
. It was a great experience for me as it was my second Van Sant (Watched Good Will Hunting years ago) and I think it was a great film. Not a personal favorite for me but it felt like a spiritual experience for me for some reason. I'm not gay but this kinda touched me on the inside and it just might be one of those films I would say would've changed my life in the future. The second half I wasn't a big fan of and I thought it was alright but the film was one hell of a ride from the beginning to end. Thanks for encouraging me to watch it! I really enjoyed the film!

Would definitely recommend and would definitely watch again.

Also, that criticism on Gloria and the child actor is a bit harsh IMO but I still do think he wasn't that great but was also limited by the lines (Which I think weren't that great) but he really did do good at least in the third act

I feel the exact same way. Kind of why I put off My Own Private Idaho so long. I had it in my head that it was going to be a much different film - far grittier, much sadder, etc.

Re: the ending.
[Show spoiler]If you mean the part about Keanu Reeves turning his back on River Phoenix and the others and marrying a woman, I agree. It's not hard to imagine him growing up to become the next Lindsay Graham. But if you mean River alone in the road at the end before getting in someone's car, I found that slightly more hopeful - almost like, life may never be ideal for him, but he's going to be okay.

I'd have to double-check, but I think Good Will Hunting is the only other Van Sant film I've watched as well.

This perfectly describes how I feel too!

I think the poor kid being nominated for a Razzie was unnecessarily cruel. I've never been a big fan of the Razzies because of stuff like that and I also because I find their nominations questionable and publicity stunt-oriented some of the time. It's probably no accident that the kid never acted again. While no one was ever going to call him a natural talent or anything, he obviously had something for Cassavetes to pick him over thousands of other kids. A shame we never got to see how he would've done in anything else. Child actors can improve tremendously within a couple of years. (Bad example, but
[Show spoiler]the kid who played Auggie on Girl Meets World was much better by the end than he was at the beginning - probably a combination of experience and growing out of the type of marble-mouthed toddler speech patterns you often see in younger kids.

There were some films from the sale I wanted but wasn’t able to get, particularly The Breaking Point. But I can’t really complain about getting these.

So I put it in my calendar to remind me to watch this movie on that date annually. I plan to watch it again on 8/1.
Tonight I'm watching Wild Strawberries. 8/1 is my annual viewing.

since i was the 1st to check them out, at least the 1st 3 so far came with the booklets as well

I double-checked. In addition to Milk and My Own Private Idaho, I've also seen Finding Forrester and Milk.

Forrester is not a masterpiece, obviously, but it has at least one very memorable line and three good performance by Sean Connery, F. Murray Abraham, and Rob Brown.

Milk is very good as well, even if the Diego Luna scenes in the middle kind of drag the movie down. As good as Penn is (and he's very good), Mickey Rourke should've won the Oscar for The Wrestler.

Put in my last order before the sale was over.

It was slim pickings since most of what was in my wishlist was out of stock online and my local B&N doesn't have a video section.

Dang! Crumb was in stock at one B&N like 20 miles from me last night I figured oh I’ll get it in the morning and sell that sucker to fund me some more blus! But now it’s gone.

I wonder what really is the deal with this becoming available. Can’t be as complicated to run more copies as zatoichi

Character actor Wilford Brimley has died. R.I.P.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/02/enter...ies/index.html

By the way, my favorite performance of his was as Blair in John Carpenter's The Thing.

He also delivered in Tender Mercies, The Natural, and Cocoon, all from his "heyday," the 1980's.
