Not African-American, but African...and Criterion-adjacent...

Was at a Bull Moose store yesterday, and came across a copy of Djibril Diop Mambéty's Hyenas, which was apparently released back at the end of May by Kino Lorber. Criterion released DDM's Touki Bouki in the first World Cinema Project volume.

Hyenas was something I'd heard about back around the time it was released, and was interested in seeing it, as it was based on a Friedrich Dürrenmatt play, The Visit that I'd read (in German) back in my college days (it sparked a love for Dürrenmatt's work, but I digress...). Never managed to see it, and had forgotten about it over the years, so it was a pleasant surprise to notice it on BM's shelf.

Looking forward to watching it.

And of course, late last night came the sad news that Chadwick Boseman passed away from colon cancer at the age of 43. Nothing in his filmography from Criterion, but since we've been talking about African-American films...

Made his mark playing Black Panther for Marvel, of course, but also played Thurgood Marshall, James Brown, and Jackie Robinson (several sources noted that he passed on Jackie Robinson Day).

Honestly, I think now that Roma and The Irishman are both on the label, it's time for Criterion to get to Lee's Da 5 Bloods. Even more so now due to the sad passing of Chadwick.
And I know they're just sitting on She's Gotta Have It. Doesn't make sense to me why there hasn't been any talk about this one. They did the LaserDisc, and the show is on Netflix so it would make sense to me for it too to get a Criterion.
And while I would like to see both Girl 6 and She Hate Me get release, I don't think those have a chance in hell to get on CC. But Get On The Bus sure does, again due it's content and how it's pretty much repeating again.

In the Kino thread, the insider posting there about Lee's Kino releases said that scheduling Spike Lee's time was difficult and he blew through deadlines, so perhaps getting his attention/sign off on release material could be part of any delays.

Maybe now with people demanding more representation in films at Criterion, they'll bother him more.

Into the West (1992) - Expiring from The Criterion Channel



Into the West about two boys and their "magical" horse, but it's set in the gritty backdrop of modern (1990s at the time) Dublin, Ireland. That's quite a juxtaposition - one that takes time to get used to - but it creates a movie unlike any other I've ever seen. It may be one of the best I've ever watched on The Criterion Channel.

The boys' father, known as Papi (Gabriel Byrne, at probably the height of his fame), used to be a Traveller (gypsy). But he gave up that life after his wife died. At the beginning of the movie, Papi and his two young sons - Ossie and Tito, obviously very Irish names - claim to be members of the Murphy family (the most common name in Ireland) along with 11 others pulling the same scam so they can all get into a housing estate and qualify for public assistance. Then their grandfather shows up with a majestic horse named Tir Na Nog (which is Irish for "Land of Eternal Youth"). One thing leads to another, and the boys are accused of stealing their own horse. They escape by taking Tir Na Nog on a grand adventure "into the west" - emulating all of their favorite American cowboy movies. As the cops look for them (including a young Brendan Gleeson with a nasty edge - before he became famous), their father enlists the help of the Travellers (Ellen Barkin, with a respectable Irish accent and red hair, and Colm Meaney are among them) to rescue them.

I expected the horse to grow wings, but that never happened. For the most part, Into the West is actually fairly realistic and down-to-earth - with a little Irish folklore thrown in.

Other movies expiring from The Criterion Channel that I've already seen elsewhere and/or own

The Squid and the Whale: Jeff Daniels is one of the best and most underrated actors ever, and this proves it. Fantastic film about a couple divorcing (Daniels and Laura Linney) and their sons' reaction to it (Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline, son of Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates). The subject matter sounds heavy, but this is actually very enjoyable and well worth watching.

Kramer vs. Kramer: Also about divorce (Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep) and the effect it has on a child. Much heavier than The Squid and the Whale, but also a masterpiece. Might make a good double feature.

My Beautiful Laundrette: Daniel Day-Lewis plays a gay man in an interracial relationship with his Pakistani boyfriend. I assume this was "controversial" in 1985, but it certainly isn't now. What's left is a beautifully understated story with great performances.

Movies I own but haven't watched: On My Way, Vera Drake, The Last House on the Left. Of these, On My Way is probably the one I'll seek out the soonest. The other two were impulse Dollar Tree/Dollar General pickups a year or three ago.

Does anyone else think that CC needs to create a secondary-label for the films they have acquired in a licensing deal/catalogue package but don't fit the CC standards but still deserve a Blu release?

For awhile it seemed like Arrow was going to be that for them, but with Arrow Academy and Arrow USA/Uk releasing films that would have been perfect for CC. It makes me wonder if CC needs a sub-label for their line?

There are films that are great but lack the supplements but they don't get the Criterion treatment for some like the Nikkatsu Noir or the William Klein series. Some films like Daisies and the Varda films aren't worthy of getting a low tier Eclipse release but since they lack extras and no one seems to be interested in talking about it, I guess they give it to the Eclipse series which I think is a good choice but still a bit too expensive sometimes.

They haven't done anything lately and I'm a bit sad they haven't released for a while now. Maybe they should release some Hong Kong and Japanese cult classics honestly since they seem to own so much of them. Oh yeah, I'm hoping that Eclipse will eventually upgrade to Blu-ray if possible. I'd love to see Nikkatsu Noir in HD

The Eclipse line was initially going to be a horror sub-label for them before it ended up being what it was (a way to get DVDs of some of their Japanese films out fast to appease the licensors.)

The Eclipse series comes close but I'm talking more about individual releases, It almost seems like CC is beginning to release the Eclipse series films in Box Sets of the Directors (Bergman & Varda Sets) but who knows! CC might just upgrade them to Blu under the Eclipse banner.
