anybody else holding off on certain blu-ray purchases because of the possibility of UltraHD releases in the future?
Fifth Element and Leon immediate jump to mind. I really want the new remasters, but since the new masters are 4K i'm crossing my fingers we'll see UltraHD blu-rays of them early. I've also passed up on House of Cards seasons on blu-ray for the same reason. |

I wanted to sooo bad, but I'm really holding hope that Netflix capitalizes on the lack of 4K media and releases its series early in the lifecycle.

I've held off buying a new title like Kingsman, because as one of the first titles scheduled for release on 4K blu-ray this seems like a bit of an obvious no-brainer.
I'm also holding out on Mad Max: Fury Road, because while I know it was filmed at 2.8K and mastered at 2K, I'd still rather take a studio-produced upscale with HDR and a wider colour gamut rather than rely on a 4K TV upscaling on the fly. I've also held off on buying nicely transferred older titles like the Bond movies, as I know that many of those already exist in a 4K state, and so a 4K blu-ray release is likely inevitable. The only downside is that I can currently buy a complete Bond blu-ray blu-ray box set for a stupidly cheap £40 or $60, when who knows how much each individual film will cost initially on 4K blu-ray. Finally, I'm holding off on popular library titles which are not currently presented in blu-ray to their best advantage. Things like the original Star Trek films. Even if they don't get an immediate 4K blu-ray release, I know that more beyond just Wrath of Khan will be remastered in 4K and that I'll likely be able to pick up new 2K blu-ray versions which still enjoy the benefit of this process. So at present, most of what I'm buying on blu-ray is affordable, well-produced titles that are not blockbusters, and perhaps a little more obscure, knowing that there's much less likelihood of them arriving in 4K for some time. Yup. Is there any doubt THE MARTIAN will be available in HDR UHD? I don't need to buy it twice. I'm pretty much only buying concerts that were shot with 1080p cameras at this point.

that's a tough one, because The Martian has a 2K DI, but many of the already announced releases do as well, so who knows.

It dangerous to assume that any titles are inevitable.
I was checking some of the older UHD Blu-ray threads and found many such postings. In September of 2014...15 months ago...when UHD BD was "officially announced" for late 2015, I read a post by a guy who said he had stopped buying BDs 6 months earlier in anticipation of UHD Blu-ray. If he held true to his word, then he will have likely gone two years without buying a disc by the time UHD Blu-ray hits the market (assuming it really does hit the market). I'm still waiting for titles on BD that I assumed would have been released years ago. As this saga drags on in a wake of missed target dates, fewer and fewer good things become "inevitable". |

THE MARTIAN was also shown in Dolby Vision / Atmos here in L.A. -- I strongly suspect it will be an early offering on UHD-BR as a Dolby Vision HDR graded title. For me, the 2K pixel count is much less of a consideration.

I used the word 'inevitable' in relation to the Bond movies appearing on 4K blu-ray, and I maintain that's the case. These films have been released multiple times on VHS, on DVD, and again on blu-ray, and still remain incredibly popular. There's a big, guaranteed fan base. The only reason they won't appear on 4K blu-ray is if the format itself fails to take off, and doesn't progress beyond the first few batches of releases. At that point, there's likely no hope for 4K in a physical format, and we'll have to rely on streaming and downloads. But how is it 'dangerous' to make an assumption that a title will be released? With the likes of Bond, it's not likely that these titles will be discontinued while blu-ray still exists as a format. If 4K blu-ray fails I have the choice to give up and buy the titles on HD blu-ray instead, at what will likely be an even lower price some months further down the line. Given the imminent arrival of 4K blu-ray, I really don't think it's unreasonable to hold off on buying bigger titles on the assumption that, if the format stands any chance, their release is inevitable. Good Morning, Gentleman
![]() I can only add that "the history likes to repeat" I thought (like many of You here) that we'll see 4K Blu-Ray sooner. But as I said above we again hit the history. I assume that the statement of my dad, that "electronic hardware is making progress forward always after one decade" is still ruling this crazy business. ![]() I would love to jump right away to 4K chain. But there isn't the right equipment and hardware in my country Poland in stores. Especially when You show me here how wonderful upgrades will be on 4K blu-ray. I would like to buy 4K TV and blu-ray player which the first one would have a V/A display (I'm not interested in IPS and better viewing angles. Blacks are on my top place) and both are made in Malaysia or Japan (but not in China - I have had a bad experience in the near past. My HT amplifier - Pioneer VSX-921 EU version had broken 2 times. First it was 3 blown audio power outputs (transistors and all the rest of this stuff). Recently one of the boards (in the repairing service they told me that one with audio processors or video processors - I don't remember precisely) The amplifier is still in the repair. I always liked Pioneer as a Japanese brand. I have had 3 A/V amplifiers from them in my past. First it was used VSX-804 RDS, then VSX-407 RDS, the third (which I now use as a replacement) is VSX-807. All of them was made in Malaysia and they have never broken. That's my theory about recent hardware which is made in China. I'm wondering what next part will broke again in my VSX-921. Because I fell in love with Home Cinema (especially movies with 7.1 sound and lossless audio) I'm confused now. I like very much the sound of this amp (but I'm willing to sell it after repair because I'm worried that some day in the near future it will broke again) Now I don't know what to buy. I love music the same (and maybe more) than HT. I'm living in a flat (so making ceiling speakers for Dolby Atmos isn't in my options even the fact that nobody lives above me - I live on the last floor) It would be great to see Indiana Jones movies, Bonds and even the original unaltered theatrical Star Wars Trilogy on 4K native blu-ray with all those add-ons. I think I will jump some day to the 4 K chain. When some company will release counterpart to my Pioneer BDP LX52. My god I have had never seen picture from movies like this. And the sound - I still cant believe that when I use the PQLS function (and the player is decoding audio and sending it to amp by PCM) I hear the drastically improvement over bitstream. The sound is incredible. Strange, but I like it very much. If I choose to replace my amplifier I would like to step into Yamaha. Anyone has any ideas what model (european) would be the counterpart to my Pioneer VSX-921? I'm sorry for that long post |
