Sure the movie was shot on film stock (or film negative) But it was finished digitally - so it is DCI Intermediate - not actually film stock. I'm curious on what resolution was done the Visual and Special Visual Effects - 2K or 4K?
And the most important question: it will be possible in the future to make 8K blu-ray version from that materials (Treat the last line as a joke of course )
Force Awakens

Cinematographic Process Digital Intermediate (4K) (master format) (excluding IMAX scenes in 70mm version)
IMAX (source format) (some scenes)
Panavision (anamorphic) (source format)

IMDB had 4K listed for Genisys, Jurassic World, Rogue Nation etc until the actual movies were released, then they all suddenly became 2K. Let's just wait and see...

Also have to look at what it was filmed with. many of these movies are filmed with a 2.8k camera, not gonna be a 4K DI.

Sure (although Skyfall was shot 2.8K and uprezzed to 4K because Sony), but Jurassic World was done on 35mm with some digital inserts and 65mm for the VFX plates. Rogue Nation was also mostly 35mm, again with some digital inserts (like using the Alexa 65 for the underwater sequence, not that it mattered because the scene was so hectic anyway). Both got finished at 2K, in the case of the former I'd blame the THREEDEE, but seeing as Rogue Nation was finished flat I dunno what happened there.

DMR is just DNR and Edge Enhancement done at a larger scale. I never watch films in IMAX unless it was specifically made for it.

This x1000!!! I just never understand why people are so gaga for IMAX unless it was shot that way. It looks like an overprocessed mess, even with their new fancy 4K laser beams. I do like their new audio system though.

I'll take any of the large auditorium non-Imax theaters any day over Imax. Cinemark XD, Regal RPX, or my local theater's Atmos Evolution.

While those movies did get a 4K DI the CGI was done in 2K. It is very rare for a new movie to be completely mastered in 4K. Since it is a CGI heavy Disney movie my guess is that The Force Awakens will get a 2K DI.

I could be wrong but IMAX finishes are proprietary, they wouldn't otherwise affect the main mastering through all channels. I see what you're thinking tho, it'd be a shame if Rogue Nation got a maximum finish of 2K just because that's all the poxy 'Digital IMAX' projectors can handle.

I'm with you. And thankfully I have a fair number to choose from up here in the Seattle area. My favorite is still the Cinerama in downtown. But I am looking forward to a proper Dolby Cinema making its way up here. I had the pleasure of attending a screening of The Martian at the Dolby Cinema in Dallas during CEDIA and I was extremely impressed with the image quality (and size). Supposedly we may see one up this way in the next year.

Pertaining to the last two postings in this thread regarding 4K and HDR Creative Commons License content on fourkay.cablelabs.com originally posted on 12/3/2015 with a follow-up post from 12/8/2015

Along with some inside background as to material significance
I’ve been alerted vis-a-vis PM to thank lurkers from other forums who read postings here then pass it onto their readers on other forums.

In this particular case, a big thank you shout-out goes to ray0414 from AVS for spreading the word to the at-large membership over at AVS for without silent readers like you, ray, this thread would never have cracked the 1,000,000 viewership mark in record time. So, Kudos to ray0414, the attached pic is shortened to include the accurate essentials of his post over at AVS submitted to me by one of our co-members of both forums…..
