As Esox noted previously, self-interest by individual entities can prove frustrating to the collective process towards a truly special product all in the name of *what’s best for the consumer*.

Because it’s not the same thing as previous cinematic implementations (i.e. The Hobbit), as 24fps or even 60 fps blur is not natural to our human visual system (HVS) as we see the real world with anything that moves at a decent rate. Watch the demo….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...mo#post8628879 Independent research involving about 25 observers under strict scientific testing conditions (DSCQS - http://www.ntt.co.jp/qos/qoe/eng/tec...al/01_5_5.html) found a significant value in perceived image quality for 120Hz vs 60Hz for all the test sequences. |

With all these newly emerging technologies such as HFR, HDR, 10 bit depth, Dolby Atmos, and even 4K 3D, what are the chances that the BDA will include these technologies in the next iteration of blu-ray? I recall reading about a committee being formed to investigate such emerging technologies for integration into the blu-ray spec. I get the strong impression that blu-ray may be the last acceptable physical format for mass media consumption and hope that the BDA has the foresight to include these technologies so as to not "fall behind: on the technology curve just a few years from now consider the fast growth of technology today. Perhaps more importantly, can BD-XL discs which handles about 125GB even be enough to handle all these technologies? Is HDMI 2.0 adequate or do we need something like displayport? Will the new codecs be adequate as well such as H.256 or VP9? I guess the BDA's silence at this years CES may be a blessing, since there seemingly is a lot of details to be worked out? I'm sure consumers are facing upgrade fatigue and so an update in the bluray spec seems to at least mitigate this a tad. Lets hope the BDA delivers and includes these emerging technologies once the specs are finalized 4K bluray.

![]() It’s just like someone forming a knee-jerk opinion of Dolby Vision after having attended the last CES and only seeing the implementation of it by a certain Chinese television manufacturer as opposed to a certain American company based in Irvine….or, not having the access and knowledge to do your own independent testing to test the theory on a similar ecosystem in a post production suite - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...rm#post8637283 Heck, I can tell you that the display of 240Hz native looks even better than 120Hz content, but I don’t know of a general audience outside of that for attendees to professional conventions like the last IBC who have viewed it because other than NHK, I know of nobody else who has produced 240 Hz material and showed it on 50-ish inch sized flat panels which have been modified to accept the 240 Hz signal. The real hurdle is not the value of HFR (> 100 Hz) but the high cost at this time in order to bring it into consumers’ homes. |

![]() Not fooling anyone is it! Was going to have a bit of a joke but forgot no one posts at this time of night. I am def a man! Penton man, I suppose I will have to see what happens with HFR. My first instinct is that I won't like it regardless of improvements etc.. I have no issue at all watching football in HD as it stands. Blur is just natural to me and I don't really notice it. I use a front projector on a 100-in and sit about 10 feet from it. DVD at that screen size to viewing distance was pretty much atrocious. BD was very much needed for larger screens, but I don't think UHD is going to be a great leap in quality like the industry wants consumers to think on displays under 100 inches with typical viewing distances. Also the content providers are so enamored with digital sell through that I really doubt that 4K/UHD content is going to be the best it can possibly be. The CE makers and the content producers are banking on consumers just believing anything labeled 4K/UHD is better. Blu-ray got the benefit of getting a disc that was over 5x the capacity of DVD and newer efficient codecs. I don't think BD-4K with a disc that is only 2x larger even with a newer codec is going to the be the best it can be especially if they have a higher bit depth and a larger color space. I really think they need a 200GB disc at the minimum. |
