I was watching game 5 of the NBA finals and I was unable to see it on my Panasonic VT30 plasma downstairs for the first half, so I watched it on my 65" Toshiba projection SDTV. I use it primarily for watching my childhood cartoons on LD or DVD and my NES or SNES games. The game was broadcast on ABC and I used my digital tuner to get the OTA HDTV broadcast. This TV has pretty good color and black levels as it is a CRT, but I was shocked at how poor everything looked. There was very poor color gradiation (dynamic range) and shadow detail. Everything looked gold tinted, from the skin of the players to the reflective wood court. The blacks on the players' uniforms were inky, but crushed. The shadow detail was so bad that I could not make out the crowd. When I got downstairs and watched the remainder of the match, I was blown away at how much better everything looked. With HDR and a OLED set, a 4K sports broadcast may make the current HDTV standards look like what I saw when watching the basketball game on my SDTV. |

Yep. As soon as I got home, I watched the Germany-Portugal match and then the US-Ghana match back to back in one lovely Group G marathon. Overall, it was an enjoyable match regardless of who you are rooting for or even if you are not a supporter of either team.
If you have seen the game, my thoughts are below. [Show spoiler] I am eagerly watching the clock to see when I can go home to watch the Brazil-Mexico game. Last edited by singhcr; 06-17-2014 at 06:47 PM. |

The jury is still out on the HDR bitrate overhead needs, since it is such a new parameter (which solution/method to implement, etc.) but its value for contrast gradation is invaluable. |

Received a PM inquiring as to exactly how the perceived video quality (ranging from bad to excellent scale (vertical axis) was determined by the test viewers.
Answer – the SAMVIQ Method (see p. 5 of Rec. ITU-R BT. 1778 - http://webs.uvigo.es/servicios/bibli...1-I!!PDF-E.pdf Mechanically, it was a continuous grading scale from 0-100 using the quality terms bad, poor, fair, and excellent to which the observer would use a computer mouse to grade the images accordingly on an adjacent desktop computer with the software installed. It was paperless. To other folks that have PMed me, sorry for the abbreviated personal responses today but I’m rushed.... |

Commercial Break by Simply Electricals in Lancashire Note to World Cup aficionados…Opinion Piece on the past Brazil vs. Mexico match... It was apparent from the get-go that Mexico came out at the beginning of that match with the clear intention to be aggressive at all costs (late…very late tackles)….but there IS a difference between being ‘clean’ and aggressive, rather than ‘dirty’ and aggressive; for example the hustle and ‘clean’ physicality shown by the Chileans in the Chile vs. Spain match yesterday constantly disrupted Spain’s passing game, which arguably has been superior to that of Brazil’s…at least in past recent months/years. The referee of the Brazil vs. Mexico match does not deserve to ref another World Cup match. Luckily, nobody got injured before he came to his senses in the 2nd half and started issuing yellow cards. On the other hand, fine refereeing by the American ref in last night’s Chile v. Spain. That’s how it’s done! |

Paper on HFR by Salmon et al. is well worth a few bucks if one is not a current SMPTE member having journal access privileges -
http://journal.smpte.org/content/123/4/50.full.pdf+html With sports, think less motion blur at HFR. |

I like this headline at least….”World Cup in motion: how football in 4K will change the way we watch TV”
http://www.techradar.com/news/televi...tch-tv-1253550 To all those applicably saddened supporters of their national teams that are now playing *academically to finish out* the World Cup tournament in Brazil, well, with hope, there is always…. a better tomorrow. |

Not to worry eriaur, as I for one, don’t mind much of anything off topic as long as it’s accurate, informative and pleasantly sociable for it maintains the rhythm of the thread and I believe that it’s certainly better than on topic inaccurate time-wasting nonsense posted all over the internet on a daily basis….unless, of course one is into repetitive back-and-forth forum debating as a side pastime
but, if any 4K purists out there insist and feel deprived this afternoon, there’s always some 4K news available to contribute, e.g. 4K restoration planned in 2015 for the classic A Better Tomorrow (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092263/ ) |

I am not sure if this was reported before, but it looks like Netflix is now streaming Breaking Bad in 4K.

Unfortunately my DVR's hard drive crashed on me a few days after I initially said I was going to watch the series, so I lost all of my Fargo episodes. I have not had a chance to watch the show yet.
