Grimsby Town in 4K?
Shooting begins on new Sacha Baron Cohen film Grimsby (Sony)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimsby_(film)
Quote:
Grimsby stars Mark Strong as a spy who's forced to team up with his football hooligan brother, played by Baron Cohen, after going on the run.

Baron Cohen was spotted in a Grimsby Town shirt at a game last year, and has been filming scenes at Southend United's ground Roots Hall. He was also recently thrown out of Wembley Stadium for hooliganism during England's 3-0 victory over Peru.

Beautiful animal....similar to that in your avatar. By the look on his face, I think even Malvo (the killer) was impressed….and little in life seemed to impress that guy.

Well, in my humble opinion, I thought that your results were not a good indication of your performance. In other words, your mates played fairly well and if things had gone a tad differently…for instance, if Uruguay’s Godin had been issued a deserved red card and/or Rooney’s header had been inches lower, ya’ll would be celebrating today.

Basic HEVC decoding capability is now available in certain 2014 TVs, for example with some Sony 4K displays - http://www.sony.com/SCA/company-news...t-experi.shtml

You’ll have to check other brands like Samsung, LG, etc. for their marketing spiels. Now off to watch dem Germans play.

Sure, but what ifs don't count for much. Besides, England made Italy look good in that first game, but Costa Rica made the Italians look like bums, which says a lot about England's lack of tactical nous and and true star quality. Nah, they were piss poor, especially in the Uruguay game.

Anyhoo, there's been some cracking games today. Iran's rearguard action against Argentina ended in heroic failure, and the Germany / Ghana match was brilliant.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. I've already speculated in another thread about the lack of Sony's 4K download service owing to the disparities of the various European markets.

It's a shame that our broadcasters and manufacturers are so reticent to embrace 4K, because it wasn't always thus. The EU led a big drive towards the 16:9 standard about 25 years ago, but since then the adoption of newer tech like HD and 3D has been done in a very fragmented piecemeal fashion. It looks like 4K will be no different, sadly.

That's why I think that 4K BD will be so important for the format in Europe, because it might end up being our only means of viewing commercially available high quality UHD content for the next few years.

[Show spoiler]Well, now, if we (the U.S.A.) don’t win the Portugal match this afternoon (my time), we must face a HUNGRY Germany.

But even if we don’t advance thru to the ‘Round of 16’, I consider this World Cup to have been a tipping point for U.S. soccer, as does this writer - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/foo...s-growing.html <- I like the video , I think Peter is somewhere in the crowd(s)

I’m pretty sure Geoff recognizes the name but for those unfamiliar with Hans H. of the EBU (among other accomplishments, he was the first European in nearly four decades to serve as engineering V.P. of SMPTE)

and presume he is just another one of those innumerable 2 cent worth tech entertainment bloggers who flood the internet, skip forward from the 25 min. timestamp to the 35min mark of the NAB Tech Summit on Cinema 2014 presentation as published on YouTube where he is introduced by a past President of SMPTE
here - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ab#post9168082

P.S.
A simpler YouTube video explaining HDR will be posted next month.

Man oh man. The USA had qualification in their hands and they threw it away, Bradley kept on getting caught in possession and you can't keep doing that against Portugal. Still in with a very good chance of making it thru though, which is more than can be said for the likes of Spain and England!

I mentioned to Penton Man a while back that I didn't think we would qualify for the knockout stages this time around. We have already seen what difference world class players make. We have none. Not one single world class player. Pathetic.

Will shout for USA now.

That one hurt at the end, truly a heartbreaker.
It felt like a big defeat. Worse....we've got much more travel ahead with one less day recovery time than that for the German team.

But I think/hope I’ll get over it this evening by going out to the movie theater and watching a flick about the other sporting passion I was highly involved with as a competitor during my younger years, namely, dirt bikes brought to these U.S. shores by John Penton - https://gathr.us/films?view=thumbnail

A review following the Hollywood premiere at the Egyptian - http://www.cycleworld.com/2014/06/19...-movie-review/

As a heads-up to those in the Irvine area of SoCal, the reservation quota has been met for the July 10th screening and as of this post there are still seats available. The Brea screening filled up FAST, so act accordingly if interested. I know we have a few former off-road motorcyclists within our membership on this forum.

which, in my opinion, is the best show/conference/retreat there is in the business, e.g. –

Soooo, long story short, recently, a new partnership between both entities was announced….

We have some exciting news to share with you. This week the Hollywood Post Alliance® (HPA®) entered into an agreement with SMPTE® to provide administrative support to HPA.

In addition to the agreement for SMPTE to provide administrative services to the HPA, the Boards of both organizations respectively, have approved a road map that will lead to an even tighter integration of HPA within SMPTE. The collective goal is for HPA to become part of SMPTE, while preserving each organizations' own unique identity and culture. This is important to both organizations and key to why we feel that each will strengthen the other.

This partnership gives both SMPTE and HPA the opportunity to extend their reach and serve their members, while better serving the whole industry - from SMPTE's engineering and technical professionals to the creative community that the HPA celebrates and supports.

SMPTE is committed to preserving the character and culture of the HPA Technical Retreat, as well as HPA in general. One of the exciting possibilities of an SMPTE-HPA alliance is that events like the Tech Retreat may travel to other communities where important discussions about the issues that impact a more global industry can take place more frequently and in additional parts of the world. And SMPTE looks forward to a more direct input from the creative community in support of its education and standards initiatives.

We are indeed looking forward to some exciting times ahead for SMPTE and thank you for your continued support. In the coming weeks and months we will be announcing more details of our partnership with HPA. In the meanwhile, we would love to hear from you about this new development. Send us your comments here.

With best regards,

Barbara Lange
Executive Director, SMPTE

I'm hearing mumblings that 2020 isn't happening for 4K Blu-ray. Looks like DCI/P3 instead.

DCI would be easier to map to legacy 709 displays than 2020, no?

I expect 4K Blu-ray to support DCI P3 but there is no native way for HEVC to encode it (even with the latest HEVC draft) so the HEVC decoder would have to support either Rec. 2020 or an even larger color space.

Even if it was a completely artificial limit that would lower the cost a bit since it would keep the gamut mapping simple. I hope the BDA doesn't do that but than again they might be more concerned with cost than with future UHDTV video.

^ Next week will you be following the status of Technicolor’s proposal for using metadata plus three 1D LUTs as a cost effective solution for gamut mapping? Any new algorithmic proposals been presented for the meeting in Sapporo?
