P.S.
For those unfamiliar with the acronym ‘DSM’, as previously discussed over a year and a half ago, it stands for the Digital Source Master…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...sm#post7478305

United Kingdom Free lecture(!)

(Hi guys, sorry this is kind of a last minute announcement, but I have only just heard about this. I thought I'd share it with you on the off-chance that some of the readers of this fine thread might, as I do, have an opportunity to attend (it's in the UK unfortunately). Anyway...)

Dr Andrew Watson, Senior Scientist for Vision Research at NASA's Ames Research Center, will be giving a free lecture entitled "The Windows of Visibility: Limits to human vision and their application to visual technology", at the University of Bristol in the UK, on Monday 10th November, 18:00-19:00.

Quote:
We do not see the world as it is, but only as fragments provided by our sensory apparatus. In this talk I will explore the many narrow “Windows of Visibility” though which we view the visual world. Though these limitations, the eye reduces the infinitely complex whirring, buzzing confusion of reality to a finite sample of information that our brain can manage. Remarkably, understanding these limitations is also key to designing better visual display technology. I will illustrate this idea with examples from video compression, display inspection, and high frame-rate movies.

Quick follow up:

To give some idea of Dr. Andrew Watson's work, he wrote an award-winning SMPTE journal paper entitled "High Frame Rates and Human Vision: A View Through the Window of Visibility" in 2013. He also founded the Journal of Vision, which has many excellent free () articles.

I would bet that the BBC R&D South Lab is well represented at the presentation.

Also to note, there are good articles (free and others for a small fee) to be found rather effortlessly in other scientific journals through the PubMed of our National Library of Medicine, in which, for example, in regards to the Vernier acuity which I just mentioned on the last page, in case anyone was wondering, subjects have been generally tested at an optical distance of 6-8 meters from the screen, depending on the particular study you read.

Alternatively, even if one is a regular SMPTE member, trying to find a journal article in the SMPTE store is a terribly frustrating experience . Word has it though that the administrative folks will be switching from the current library software to one that is more in tune with current standards. Thank goodness!

Geoff, a F/U from our discussion last March where you were teaching me British slang terms and colloquialisms - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ed#post8925981

With regards to Life of Pi, for you’ll get a kick out of this marketing hypocrisy play on words from just last week…”genuine Hollywood movies in 4K” from - http://www.trustedreviews.com/samsun...eo-pack-review

Given that back in the day the camera manufacturer was proud to promote/emphasize the fact (along with endorsement from the Digital Effects Supervisor) that Life of Pi wasn’t shot nor finished in 4K ( ~ the 5:30 timestamp and later when they sit down after the clips)…

Question is, when will *genuine 4K Hollywood movies in 4K* be forthcoming from Samsung, or will everything be upconverts?

That 'trusted review' makes for painful reading, I loved this gem of a comment in particular: "Colours look excellent on these UHD transfers, too. The extra blend subtlety that UHD makes possible leaves tones looking immaculately natural and completely free of striping or blocking."

Nice technical analysis there. I know it doesn't say what the bit depth of the footage is - though the colour is said to be sampled at 4:2:0 - but if it is indeed 8-bit then that footage will have no more/less "extra blend subtlety" than a properly mastered Blu-ray.

As for it being an F/U to what I said before, I wondered what you meant for a second there. Ah, Follow Up. Not the other meaning, which you don't have to be an expert in slang to pick up on.

‘Trusted’, ‘expert’, ‘world class’ all seem to me to be rather liberally assigned to individuals and entities these days. Not to exclusively pick on the author of that article, for I find all A/V tech writers generally lacking in investigative journalism or originality. No matter which I’ve read, they all come off as vehicles for infomercials. I think that reporting behavior can be mostly attributed to *don’t bite the hand that feeds you*.

In the entertainment business, especially in Hollywood, *relationships* rule, not factual analysis or transparency to the truth.

Note: I have no affiliation whatsoever with Paul’s TV and I certainly didn’t make any friends at Samsung electronics yesterday with the past post about their ‘4K’ Hollywood movie offerings but after celebrating those who have served in the armed forces this federal holiday, a heads-up to anyone then planning on spending some money today and would like to take advantage of an offer….

Act fast to get a free Samsung 32” HD tv, valid thru today or while supplies last at Paul’s TV (http://www.paulstv.com/all_store_locations.asp)….
https://www.facebook.com/PaulsTV/pho...type=1&theater

Hey, I realize it’s only HD rez and a rather humble 32” sized screen for no real immersive effect at all but, it may be good for placement in one’s kitchen, garage, etc. and it’s FREE.

Heh. It's funny that the two movies announced by Samsung for that pack which WERE actually finished at 4K (Wolverine Origins and Night at the Museum) have been dropped, leaving only the upconverts.
