![]() ![]() Sir, for perspective into Hawaii film locations……that comment ![]() Meanwhile, until then, if you get to see the Arsenal in 4K (http://www.techradar.com/us/news/tel...lution-1299480 ), and it looks good, then I’ll be quite envious. |

For those planning on purchasing a 4K HDR-capable television in the relatively near future, you might want to pass on this - https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=17194 for the time being.
And wait for the Dolby Vision HDR version, as the colorist from FotoKem did a good job with Andreas starting from the log files. |

So, are there any extraocular(outside dee eye) concerns in the minds of knowledgeable video engineers and scientists about the higher luminance output associated with future HDR display, one might ask?
Well….yes. There is concern about viewing even brighter images (HDR) late at night for it is a fact that melatonin suppression is intensity dependent (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3047226/ ) . To explain….research has shown that night time light exposure suppresses the production of melatonin which is the major hormone that controls sleep and wake cycles. Soooo, a reduction in melatonin at night is associated with subjective levels of sleeplessness. However, the consequences are potentially more serious than only lousy sleep outcomes….http://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/...p-470874691595 Namely….studies have suggested there is an increase in the risk of impaired immune system function, and possibly cardiometabolic consequences such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and heart disease (e.g. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/1...0.00773.x/full ) Soooo, the thinking is (note to Ray…that means educated speculation), that it may well be even more important not to watch HDR content just prior to bedtime, i.e. finish watching the HDR movie or show at least an hour prior. Busy this week (with a 4 letter word…..WORK), ergo, only time for one post (link) for now…
For those yearning for more, lots of not so difficult thinking contributions starting about here – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...g#post11063134 and continuing onwards. P.S. Geoff, in the meantime, here’s a T-shirt for you (not even necessary to compete against those dinos to get one, just requires a little $.) - http://teespring.com/raptorwheelietshirt If not interested, please pass on to mike. |

So, what happened? We had the Tomorrowland Dolby Cinema rollout with invitation only for the techfluencers who dutifully praised it. Then San Andreas. Trying to find normal theatergoers comments about the Dolby Cinema HDR offerings was like looking for a needle in a haystack. The comments I did find were noncommittal at best. Granted, there are only a handful of Cinemas equipped to show Dolby Cinema HDR, but really? Seems to me, you better wow theatergoers with HDR if you expect to make much of an impact with HDR in the home theater. Last edited by raygendreau; 07-22-2015 at 10:51 PM. |

![]() But to directly answer your question as to what/why/how much *wow* there is/will be with the HDR version of some upcoming movies, you have to understand that the final look is more related to what the filmmakers are/were trying to accomplish with their storytelling. It’s very dependent upon creative choice and plus, it’s still a learning process for all the filmmakers. What I mean is that like for instance with T-land, the Director, DP and VFX could have chosen to go more *WOW* with the contrast and color palette, but they weren’t out to construct the movie aesthetic around a powerful post production tool…..like some viewers may have experienced with material shown at professional trade shows…IBC, NAB, CineGear, etc. But I think that anyone with a remotely critical eye should be able to identify the superior color and contrast of the HDR as opposed to the SDR version of T-land had they’d been viewed side-by-side in the theater setting. Viewing only the HDR version in a theater and how much someone will appreciate the improved PQ… ![]() ![]() Last edited by Penton-Man; 07-23-2015 at 01:57 AM. Dolby Vision in the theater….Dolby Vision at home. In regards to this idiom “tail wagging the dog”, what will turn out to be the tail and what will be the dog?

![]() I take it none of these people are gamers? Or if they are then they have inadvertently subjected themselves for cause of sleeplessness, impaired immune system function, possible cardiometabolic consequences such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, obesity, & heart disease.. yet just discovered these facets through HDR luminance. |
