Note to readers:
Sometime in the next couple weeks or so? (they're working on scheduling as we speak), my posts will most likely be considerably shorter in length compared to the last post on the previous page (if there be even any posts by me at all) as I'll be losing the ability to use my right (dominant) arm/hand due to surgery for x? amount of days/weeks....as it's indeterminate at this time. Welcome back Steed. ![]() |

I always love the ol' "arc seconds" argument against 4K.
Images on a screen with more detail will look sharper no matter what. Take the example of a bit of the image where you have black pixels and white pixels adjacent to each other. If this image is downsampled to 1080p you will end up with an average, or grey, pixels. You lose what was actually there, both the black and the white pixels. Even though you can not readily resolve between the pixels in the image, you have ended up with an overall softer image because more unique pixels have been lost and blended into one another. As an experiment I connected my PC to my 4K tv and queued up 4K videos in Youtube. Youtube has the benefit of being able to toggle between 1080p and 4K. Standing back well far away from the tv, well outside the distance that even "perfect' vision could resolved different pixels, I paused on individual frames and toggled back and forth. Even at over 12 feet away from a 55" screen the 4K image looked sharper and more "contrasty." The difference was especially noticeable in very fine details like rain drops, bubbles, or any other fluid effect. At 1080p a lot of the shadows became noticeably lighter and less preeminent. Again, this was purposefully done while sitting far enough away from the screen so that "visual acuity" would not be able to distinguish between pixels. |

![]() ![]() I'll try to contribute as often as I can but I don't think I'll be much for becoming a left handed look-at-the-keyboard typist....I'll probably have to do short responses with copy and paste links. Just glad to see you back. ![]() P.S. b.t.w., to those who PM me, same thing applies, expect very brief responses and please be patient if they are delayed. I will give you something to look forward to in the 4K realm. I got a Panasonic FZ1000 mirrorless camera online today and it shoots 4K/30fps @100 MB/s... I am making an animation cel and wanted to make a video of me painting it. I was all set to buy a Panasonic G6 but my friend tipped me to this camera. It will be very exciting to work in a 4K workflow. I'll post it here if you guys and gals are interested. If there's a lack of 4K content, I'll make my own! |

I’m already working at whittling ‘em down, e.g. – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...0#post11305210 but believe me, even if the postings were only 1 sentence long, some (esp. those on outside forums or websites) will never appreciate, much less acknowledge their worth. If I’m able I’ll try to post HDR-related notes from the SMPTE standards meeting last week before they become publicly available in long length form (like I did before, here – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post11099711 Meanwhile this upcoming webcast by a former Sony employee is highly recommended…..https://www.smpte.org/webcasts/Clari...ghDynamicRange |

Yep, it’s like which body part is going to fail next. Not at all looking forward in trying to wipe my butt after a #2 by holding tissue paper in my non-dominant hand. But I guess I’d better start practicing that act today too so as to become more proficient.

Easy for you Brits to say, as you guys get to see more of the pitch (with 4K acquisition and delivery - http://www.whathifi.com/news/5-thing...sport-ultra-hd) than us poor blokes in the U.S.
With 4K, there will be nowhere for Costa to hide his behavior (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...1#post11305221 ) Thanks for the well wishes....your, as well as others here on this thread and in PM, kindness will not be forgotten. ![]() |

Heads-up, not EOTF nor OETF ( https://www.smpte.org/sites/default/...-2-handout.pdf ) but a new acronym in regards to HDR for Blu-Dog to learn, namely….OOTF, bookmark it

Saw it this weekend at a theater showing it in true 4K with a 4K Barco projector. Didn't look any better than the 2K DIs I see there all the time, but still a gorgeous film. Fantastic film though from one of my favorite directors working today. The level of tension throughout this movie is astounding and continually builds from beginning to end with almost no pause at all.
