Anyone know what the IMAX workflow resolutions were for Star Trek Into Darkness? I've noticed all the 35mm high-res stills LucasFilm is putting out for VII are 2K, whereas the IMAX stills are 4K, leading me to think they might be mastering at 2K for 35, 4K for IMAX. I remember reading somewhere that a similarly dubious process happened on STID, but I can't find any hard numbers.

Just spitballing here, but whenever large format IMAX footage is involved then the digital workflow goes all the way up to 8K for mastering the footage itself and then filming out to 15/70, but what happens after to the DSM is more hazy. I don't think there was ever a 4K deliverable for STID, just the various 2K 3D versions (and the 15/70, natch).
Fingers crossed Ep VII will get a genuine 4K finish but due to the 3D the regular DCPs will still be 2K. But now that IMAX actually have 4K projectors on some sites then it's possible they'll have their own bespoke 4K master for their laser installs. |

For 100% DMRs shown in IMAX digital, like everything else I don't think it can match what you saw in 15/70 prints of those movies, but still should get image quality and sound at least matched by the best of what you'd see in regular theaters (and much more often those theaters would be worse). Anyway, unlike Skyfall (saw on a 15/70 print), seeing Spectre on Friday in a regular screen. Still is a nice theater: single screen location with good sized screen, 7.1 Dolby sound, and I think their DCP is 4K (actually have 35 and 70 capability there as well, and saw Interstellar there in 5/70). Actually depending on how it plays out, good chance In the Heart of the Sea is only Fall release I see in IMAX (already booked regular 3D tickets for Star Wars after the IMAX shows for opening weekend were nearly all sold out by the second day of ticket sales). Sure, as I said IMAX scenes are usually post-produced at way beyond UHD quality, so for this version Paramount/Samsung/whoever could've pulled the relevant .DPX (or whatever file format, I'm sure Penton will correct me in due course) files and done a 4K extraction and slugged them into the upscaled 2K 35mm stuff, but I think I'm right in saying there wasn't a 4K theatrical deliverable of any kind; the 3D put paid to that.

but, for the moment, I’m blocking…. just can’t recall. Eventually i’ll come up with it though, for I figure if I expose mike to enough of the imagery (like in the posts above), he’ll slowly become desensitized....and engage once again. ![]() Meanwhile, onto another movie that garnered quite some acclaim several weeks back ( http://deadline.com/2015/09/room-win...al-1201538545/), namely, http://roomthemovie.com/#/ (shot with mike's favorite camera ![]() DCP: 4K (scope) File Size: 203.40 GB |
