Yes, they can go back to the raw film assets and do a new transfer. Some CG-assisted shots may have to be upconverted from the 2K original though, while others may be able to be recreated anew in 4K.

Ok, cool! Thank you for the information. Hopefully someday those films will get released! The current Blu's are really unimpressive due to a shockingly low bit rate from the early days of the format.

Elysium comparison:

UHD Web-DL (58 mbit/s HEVC) vs Blu-ray HD (25 mbit/s AVC)

https://www.caps-a-holic.com/c.php?g...=71224&i=3&l=0

Again, incredible ability to keep detail for Blu-ray despite 1/4 of the resolution

If memory serves I believe that flick was the first time Michael Ballhaus (http://www.camerimage.pl/en/stelling...-debiutow.html ) tried the DI process.

Geoff, you know where to confirm.

Default The significance of keeping a ‘clean sheet’.

Not to worry for those allergic to reading about footie, just messin with you, I’m not referring to the final result in some soccer match, rather I’m talking having a clean capture medium for optimal HDR presentation.

For our new readers, a retrospective look back and supplementation to a post from one year ago to-the-day …..

Something cinematographers should be aware of is if there is an intended HDR post production (esp. if one chooses to really leverage all the dynamic range in the imagery), a filmmaker really should strive for a clean capture medium to begin with. Refer to ~ 8 min. timestamp and re-emphasized at ~ the 11min mark just before the end of the interview with a colorist who’s done his fair share of HDR grades for feature films (Tomorrowland, The Martian, Exodus: Gods and KIngs)….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...3#post11918958

Plus, be it PQ (ST 2084) transfer function or hybrid log-gamma HDR method, even with some of the best cameras (F55 with 4K *prime* lenses), depending on lighting and exposure, sensor noise can become enhanced and thusly challenging during HDR post production. Factual example being (although not specifically admitted to in the marketing article per se) The Barber of Seville (http://www.sony.hu/pro/press/pr-sony...ber-of-seville) by a company based in Rome having its fair share of cutting edge 4K HDR production experience, namely, DBW.. http://www.dbwcommunication.it/?lang=en#/news

Penton-Man

its very rare, A camera digital 4K in movie called "Drag Me to Hell" was natived 4K film. it's perfect match 2160p.

Do you think again remake cgi renden graphite on 4K? because 4K film to 2K with cgi-rendens graphite.

Universal Studios waiting to see grow large business UltraHD 4K sell.

I nail to the movie in my collection list.

If I understand you correctly, the answer is no, but you wouldn’t be missing much for if I recall the flick correctly much of the vfx has motion blur anyway.

This is why I find discussions about "director's intent" to be so hilarious. Exactly which one of these formats is how the movie is "supposed to look?" One of them? All of them?
For those unable to speak to Ben about Star Wars at last month’s HPA

Appearances can be deceiving. Don’t let the attire of the guy in the hoodie fool you, for he is considered the colorists’ colorist by many in the business.

Haha, actually, that's exactly how I expect someone to look that's a behind the scenes worker... It's always interesting to see them in interviews.

(And, damn, I think I remember first meeting him at POP nearly 20 years ago... Wasn't expecting to see that name, haven't really been a part of that area of the industry in a while.)

Would be nice, as long as they do a 6k scan of the original assets for a new 4k master ("The departed" for me).

We know Warner has no problem upconverting 2k DIs so it's not a problem of wether the movie could be released on UHD. But does what you said mean anything for a proper UHD release? I mean, where you implying because the movie was finished with a 2k DI, they won't bother to do a new 4k master now, or something like that?
(also, I'd like to think they didn't start throwing away the camera negative when finishing on DIs became all the rage...)

I think he said the cgi had lots of motion blur and wouldn't be much improved by a 4k rendering. I don't know if he meant it humorously. In any case, re-rendering and re-comping all the vfx for a new 4k master seems unheard of. Very expensive, I would assume. I hope expert Penton-Man will answer you better.
