Note: Two different types HDR deliverables of this opera have been produced (the event was live, but the content recorded and then posted). One using the hybrid log gamma approach, while the other is PQ (ST 2084) based. I’m looking forward someday to have the opportunity to compare them side-by-side although I don’t know if it will definitively prove, for all content, the declaration in the header of this BBC slide (presented to a professional working group last January)…

nevertheless, comparison viewing would still be informative.

Eh, I didn’t expect that ^ block, so if watching the above linked vimeo is restricted on your home devices, then insert the password

barbierehlg

in order to unlock it and view the extract.

Just a guess but it might have something to do with the thread title?

It makes sense that Sony have been very quiet on the UHDBD Player front. It would make perfect sense to have them release an updated PS4 as their first UHDBD player.

It's win win. They have non gamers buying a UHD player with the possibility they might dabble in the gaming side and gamers buying a console that might entice them to pick up a UHDTV.

It will also help keep the costs in check, since they can sell the console at $400, maybe at a loss and it's still the same price as rival stand alones but they have the added benefit of recouping losses via software sales. They get something like $10-$15 per game sold so take in to account over 135 million games were sold in 2014 generating more than $22 billion in revenue, you do the math, they will easily make the money back even if they sell at a loss.

Makes more sense for them to do that than release a stand alone out of the gate.

It's not going to happen: maybe a slim version with a UHD Drive and HDMI 2.0a it's possible

But they are dominating the market: they are not going to upset nearly 40 milion users with more powerful hardware for games.....

They are all in on VR at this point. More power will only be a benefit to devs.

Where there's smoke there's fire though, it's been talked about behind closed doors for a fact. But what we eventually get a retail is anyone's guess.

Exactly. People buy consoles knowing it's going to be supported for at least 5 years. Developers know everyone has the same specs and that's why games get optimized over the years and continue to look better. Making another console with more power loses the closed box focus of one platform. Developers won't optimized for the less powerful model. They'll do the bare minimum and put all the resources into the more powerful model.

Early adopters will feel cheated they bought a PS4 and now only 3 years later there's another console. Doesn't matter if it's forward compatible.

At most it will be added UHDBD playback and probably some sort of graphics scaler to make current games look better on a UHDTV and not true 4K gaming.

If you don't have a UHDTV or care about UHDBD then it doesn't make much difference.

They can't fragment the market and devs won't build two versions of a game. So it's not all doom and gloom. Look at it a PSX, and I doubt you'll be far off

Same old PS2 just added features.

Added features is fine. A completely different specification is another story. I don't see it going over well.

Aside - With regards to the topic of options for HDR finalized deliverables as discussed a little on the last page with the famous opera, I’ll inform folks that FilmLight is supportive of both (hybrid log gamma and the PQ (SMPTE 2084) standard.
