I think Mike's right (again? Aw, man) that this will be Sony's main foray into the world of UHD Blu-ray playback for the forseeable future. They can kill two birds with one stone.

Back in the day, I think we had the best Insider’s forum going….. https://forum.blu-ray.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61 . Insiders were not just vetted, but over time 99% of what was stated came true....if not immediately, eventually as it was in the works.

I don’t get over to gaf, but good stuff. PS4K people should be encouraged by the info there.

Mav provided a reference, did mike do so on some other thread? I normally limit myself to a few select threads so I may have missed it.

That's what I've been saying.

It's win win. They have non gamers buying a UHD player with the possibility they might dabble in the gaming side and gamers buying a console that might entice them to pick up a UHDTV.

It will also help keep the costs in check, since they can sell the console at $400, maybe at a loss and it's still the same price as rival stand alones but they have the added benefit of recouping losses via software sales. They get something like $10-$15 per game sold so take in to account over 135 million games were sold in 2014 generating more than $22 billion in revenue, you do the math, they will easily make the money back even if they sell at a loss.

Makes more sense for them to do that than release a stand alone out of the gate.

It makes complete sense from Sony's point of view. Although the general consensus among gamers is that of "the sky is falling!" which I can understand. I don't want to pay £350+ every few years on new hardware. I'd be a PC gamer if I wanted to do that, I just want to know my hardware is going to be relevant within the console space for at least 5 years.

But like I say, it's win win for Sony. They get guaranteed sales from both camps rather than just one small one.

Nice, the blue was toned down considerably for the 'after' and it looks much more naturalistic IMO.

Yes, which just tells you that the colors are probably considerably off for most hdr being watched right now. I'm pretty sure my reds are all jacked up for P3 colors as well on my tv.

As others have pointed out in the DV picture, the pause sign in the lower right corner is much whiter after his 1st run at calibration with DV.

You don't have to tell me though, I've been saying that from the get go.

[edit] And the slightly ironic thing about me being mired in the SDR hinterlands is that I should be able to use my existing calibration gear to gauge how successful the HDR-to-SDR colour transform is when I get my player (using the test patterns on the Sony UHD discs), so while it won't be HDR I should be able to correct it to 709 so that in itself is a start regarding some sense of accuracy to source. Or it'll be way off and I'll be spending the summer tearing my hair out trying to get it to track properly.

Robert Zohn (our retailer Insider) should do a shootout between the Vizio P and an LG OLED with Dolby Vision. I think that would be helpful to consumers looking to pull the trigger.

it can have 4k playback but i highly doubt it will be able to read hdr/wcg/10 bit video like a proper 4k player..

I don't think he's going to be carrying the P series, only the R series. He did tell me he plans to do a quick comparison when his demo R series arrives. Other than that they are due for battle at the VE shootout.

Sony gaming and Sony electronics are 2 different divisions though. I can't see Sony corporate going "well we have a PlayStation that does 4K so that's it" any more than they did when the BD playing PS3 came out.

The whole movie seems to have an IMO sickly looking color grading.
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/In-th...1/#Screenshots

Ron Howard graded Rush similarly with a heavy gold & teal bent (which I hate).

One thing I've noticed is that films theatrically only mildly teal/gold all of a sudden are HEAVY teal/gold on Blu-ray, leading me to wonder WTF was the director thinking. Does the downconversion to 8-bit Rec. 709 exaggerate these color schemes?

Now I'm wondering if the greater color range of DCI and UHD will result in overall just better looking films.

Ugh, why is the HDR label printed onto the inserts? This needs to be a sticker.

Never discount dat "corporate synergy", especially when one division keeps losing money while the other is one of the few success stories for Sony in recent times. Speaking of which, the situation you mention with the PS3 was a different time, no? Sony were first with standalone BD hardware IIRC so that was already its own thing compared to the PS3, but they've already made it quite clear that they're keeping UHD Blu at arm's length and that we won't be seeing a standalone player until 2017 at the earliest.

And if the PS4K were to really take off, sales-wise, I can see them postponing the UHD standalone or even cancelling it outright, especially because it wouldn't offer anything significant over a standalone player in terms of hardware (it'll just be a box with an HDMI or two if their current players are any indication) and the PS4K would, in mike's immortal words, "do more" for the same price or cheaper anyway.

Yes, I think there's something to be said for that "exaggeration" effect of the 709 trim pass. Because it can't convey the outright subtleties of the original grade it's more of an "either or" kind of look and could get pushed into more aggressive and simplistic timing (I mentioned the same kind of thing here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post10678298)..
