Directors usually decide. Cameron, Lucas are pretty strict about it.
Abrams is a Dolby TrueHD/Atmos guy and he couldn't get Disney to author it in that format so...

It's not 1996, THX is irrelevant in 2016 for a direct master from a DI

One must admit, though, that a huge Lucasfilm product releasing without Lucasfilm's THX is not a very good look, from a marketing perspective.

To public perception it remains a Lucasfilm product/service/company (very closely associated with Star Wars, specifically, as well), even if it no longer is.

Simple really
Well there will soon be two options for HDR. HLG is backward compatible and simple while PQ (SMPTE 2084) is more complex/costly but has a very large dynamic range (20 million to 1). Also PQ was the first HDR method to be made into a standard and before than it was just proprietary implementations that weren't going anywhere.

Auro 3D and Dolby Atmos sound:
Is this one for real??? I thought it was an April Fools joke, but it is still listed here:

http://www.bluray-disc.de/blu-ray-fi...y-blu-ray-disc

So the question is if this is for real, or if the webmaster of that site fell for a joke. What makes it even more suspicious are the sound formats and that it says it is on an BD-100 GB disc.

.. or maybe they are just late in removing their April Fools joke

Another HDR format: VP9 Profile 2 [VP9 is free, HEVC is not free]
http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php...&id=1452198532
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-relea...300199322.html

"In addition, visitors to LG's CES booth will be able to experience HDR content on YouTube for the first time. HDR content from YouTube has been mastered to meet Google's VP9-Profile 2 HDR standards. YouTube plans to provide an HDR playback function on its website in 2016."

A multi-technology HDR SoC (Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG, VP9 (profile 2?)): Amlogic S912

Ergo, purchase a Sony 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray movie and experiment with it yourself to find out.
(wrt the color spaces of ITU-R BT.2020, P3 and Rec. 709, there should be RGB CYM stuff on your product)
I've got the movie (Chappie), I'm just waiting on the damned player. Gonna be a loooong couple of weeks.

Well I’m not expecting any finding-Jesus-moment from you, but for over a year now I’ve voluntarily tried to broaden your horizons in that there is more to picture quality beyond that of simply static resolution and the info in my postings have declared it so, with bits of specifics, be it in regards to scanning, or whatever, before such truisms were revealed in professional publications in interviews with Senior Vice Presidents of post production like in CineAlta magazine, mostly read by professionals.

As to Chappie , unrecognized by many, but it was one of those Columbia Pictures productions where the DI was actually not done at Colorworks in Culver City, but rather up in Vancouver.

^ P.S.
Thinking back from aways back in Vancouver land, and if you or any other user decides to do some pre and post calibration illustration, please don’t take pictures with your camera in order to demonstrate whatever point you’re trying to make, but for the sake of knowledgeable accuracy, please produce a proper framegrab, like tech influencers do for standards organizations - http://phenix.int-evry.fr/jct/doc_en...t.php?id=10319 (Version 4) for viewing on an appropriate display.
