It's a niche platform. It won't do the numbers of DVD or Blu ray. It's like Laserdiscs. I'm sure they will do Star Wars VII when the 3D version comes out later in the year. But they have to be choosey what they release. This is not "the next big thing". It is a niche market.

At the early days it was true to the DVD and Blu-ray platform as well, although the first Blu-ray releases were mediocre movies as well.
Why do you think that this is not the next big thing? It's not just a resolution bump like it was with the Blu-ray

If I were to question the same post you quoted, it seems unlikely that a 3D movie is also being presented in 4K. Am I right?

every film I see in xplus is upscaled to 4k 3d or not by the Sony projection

does anyone know why Disney isn't releasing UHD BD films? Won't they use the new format?

interesting, but just because a film is being shown in 3D and in laser doesn't support or detail if it's in fact 4K. I was always under the impression, that 3D conversion/filming was relegated to 2K capacity

Batman v Superman finally dived into this. The large IMAX elements were native the rest upscaled.

That German Museum also have the Shout docu's which are native 3D and 11K scanned. Large Premium Format is now uprising. Jungle Book was the first Dolby Cinema 3D movie as well.

Here in the Netherlands we also have a Film Museum, like above German link ('Eye' in Amsterdam) those guys love the medium 'film' are also not doing any 2K DCP upscaling to 4K.

Captain America: Civil War will have a 65mm Alexa Premium format screening. That movie can also be found on that German link. I am positive.

for 3D not be downrezzed to 2K for theater DCP encoding is huge news, I'm surprised there hasn't been more technology news (shouting from the hills) regarding this.

wasn't the reason why Dolby Cinema / Vision not releasing movies in 3D was the fact that the eventual DCP would have to go out in 2K.

I think it's more that Dolby/IMAX DCPs contain their own special sauce because they're not restricted to current DCP conventions. Case in point is the 2048x1080 (full 1.90) resolution of the 2K IMAX DCPs. But we're only getting things like 3D DV and separate 4K 2D/2K 3D finishes now (Sony aside, they've been doing that for a while) because it seems as if the studios are FINALLY starting to realise the worth of all this 'special presentation' stuff, not only in terms of getting arses on seats but also for the home video lifespan of the product.
