![]() ![]() Anyway Geoff, other than again pointing out the hypocrisy of studio/Reviewer marketing, I can tell you one thing, whenever the HDR version of Café Society does make it to home media, Vittorio Storaro supervised the grade… not some studio technician or outside mind-reading consultant. So, at least in that case you’ll know you’ll be receiving the filmmaker’s vision. |

Momentarily, I’m transferring Richard’s fine post (and link) from the HDR facts thread to us res readers here for one comment because the predominant imaging parameter of this thread is after all, resolution.
So, to emphasize something to those quick readers who may have skimmed the reporter’s article for it’s only briefly mentioned in the 3rd paragraph and it merits some thought and attention rather than just a one-liner. Namely the point about Resolution - As we know, there are two resolutions described in ITU-R BT.2020: •UHD (2160p): 3840 pixels x 2160 lines (corresponds to 4 x 1080p) •UHD (4320p): 7680 pixels x 4320 lines (corresponds to 16 x 1080p) The proposed recommendation ITU-R BT[HDR-TV] (http://www.itu.int/md/R15-SG06-C-0039 ) contains the same two resolutions, but adds: •HD (1080p): 1920 pixels x 1080 lines So, why did ITU add this ^ advanced 1080p image format to the DNR ? Well, supplementing 1080p imagery with HDR, WCG and HFR to form an advanced 1080p image format has its advantages as it allows: 1. Program makers and broadcasters to use a phased approach to the transition between current HD services and future UHD services. 2. Content that does not have a long term value (daytime programming etc.) to use HDR and WCG without the more expensive UHD resolution. 3. Early introduction of 100/120p content especially where practical broadcast infrastructure and consumer products capable of 3840 x 2160 HFR, may be some years away. It also offers distributors an opportunity to deploy bit-rate-efficient advanced HDTV services ahead of full UHD services with HFR. |

I think that the US broadcasters are looking at 1080p60 with HDR/WCG since that tends to get mentioned a lot in NAB press materials. The US broadcasters have also stated that it would be hard to transmit 4K during the ATSC 3.0 transition since they will also have to simulcast in ATSC 1.0 for several years.

It's not that. It's the money invested in current infrastructure to transmit a signal very few people can take advantage of. They transitioned to HDTV because it was a government mandate and with the knowledge people were eventually going to be forced to upgrade their TVs.

Progress Note
I’m on my way with my lovely wife to French Polynesia which is known to have been roots -> click Manager Info tab to some rather accomplished folks, like for instance Conrad Hall, so I won’t be posting while on vacation. Plus, I may be super busy when we return stateside. Given the date of the 2,000,000 viewership milestone for this thread , even though we’ve since switched locations to the Ultra HD Blu-ray and 4K Hardware and Technology forum, I notice we’ve been running well over 150,000 views/month since April 25th so I think I temporarily leave the thread in fine form….but, there is always room for improvement by others ![]() Readers, don’t be shy. Have a go at a contribution. Knowledge and fun are good (i.e. work hard, play hard, help out others). Yo Mike, and no sleeping on the job. |

Interview with the head of fox, pretty informative about the processes of creating hdr and the state of the industry.

![]() ![]() Guess who’s back. ![]() I’ve got a DVR filled full of Euro 2016 and Copa matches yet to watch, which will take days to get thru but given the dedicated Blu-ray.com member I am, having interests besides the greatest sport there is (Peter THX), I’ll first give due diligence to the audio video forum and see what I’ve missed since playing in paradise. Quickly, first to the threads outside ‘4K Movies Releases’. |

Jolly good practice, that ^ , as noted in Jan. of last year in discussion with dvdmike, not all facilities have been doing that . 20th Century Fox Studios post production gets a Gold star. As to what the writer chose as a headline for the article “Theaters Will Need To Catch Up To HDR TVs”, well, to be fair, people do, or at least should realize that as compared to HDR TVs, commercial theaters are more challenged in trying to produce high luminance with front projection systems….quite a bit more difficult, technologically and economically compared to achieving the same with flat panels. So, with regards to high luminance….commercial venues are kind of fighting with one hand tied behind their backs with front projection. Plus, HDR installments will add significant cost to the exhibition industry….an industry (theater owners) that not too long ago just went thru one upgrade (digital projector installation). As far as the business reality of it all, there has been some embryonic brain storming about developing a financial model (Sony has established “managed service” for switching to next generation for cinemas) for the post-VPF era to help bring forth more HDR capable commercial theaters. Aside from the in-home HDR quality vs. theatrical HDR future wishes expressed in the interview, credit goes to Fox for the Format Tests: https://dci.foxpico.com/basic/afadae...st-05-2016.tar (< warning, 20GB download) which were useful at the recent theatrical projection testing fest (for Insiders) last month at Deluxe. Which included a lot: • stereoscopic subtitles synced with burned in timecode, • left-eye/right-eye burn-ins for 3D content • odd/even burn-ins for HFR content • CPL Metadata w/ TKR • synced captions • 96k audio• 4K test pattern but not HDR. This is the complete list of formats which was included: ![]() |
