Default 'Dunkirk' 4K in Theaters

According to Deluxe's theater details, 'Dunkirk' from Christopher Nolan will be shown in theaters in 4K. It's a Warner Bros. release so I have little doubt it will be coming to UHD disc, but officially there is no word yet.

Plot:
  • Miraculous evacuation of Allied soldiers from Belgium, Britain and France, who were cut off and surrounded by the German army from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, France, between May 27- June 04, 1940, during Battle of France in World War II.
Technical Details:
  • Filmed on 65/70mm and IMAX 65mm film cameras
  • 4K DCP
  • VFX/CG resolution is unknown at this time, but Christopher Nolan is known for doing as much practical/in-camera as possible.
Aspect Ratio:
  • REAL IMAX - 2.20:1 to 1.44:1 for IMAX scenes
  • FAKE IMAX - 2.20:1 to 1.78:1 for IMAX scenes (Digital IMAX screens)
  • Standard Screen - 2.35:1 (no aspect change)

Wonder if 35mm stuff was scanned at 4k or scanned at 2k and then upscaled.

Nothing was filmed on 35mm, the whole movie was shot on 65mm.

If filmed was 35mm to scanned 4K. That's called 4K...Why make for UHD 4K matches?

Seeing as how Interstellar has a 4K theatrical release, this doesn't surprise me. Now what does surprise me is that it has not been released on 4K Disk.

To be precise:

  • IMAX Digital: 2.20:1 to 1.90:1 for IMAX scenes
  • Standard Digital and 35mm film: 2.40:1 (no aspect change)
  • Standard 65mm (5/70): 2.20:1 (no aspect change)
  • IMAX Scenes: about 100 minutes of the movie

I made an Excel file for this movie:

Tell me about it, just travelling up from the Dorset coast to Londinium costs me a packet! But it was well worth it for Interstellar and BvS, and I'll do so again for Dunkirk next year. See you there bud!

Hey MisterXDTV, what's the source on the info in that spreadsheet? While I intend to see a true 70mm Imax presentation, I'm disappointed the 4k will be created from the 35mm IP. I can only hope that the eventual UBD release will be sourced from the 8k directly.

--- Back on Topic ---

It's nice to see more movies coming out in 4K in theaters! I just hope the trend continues. Some big movies coming up are Dunkirk, Sully, and Rogue One. I am sure I am missing a few more though...

Well, due to the Blus of other Nolan movies having the switching aspect ratios they clearly weren't sourced from the fixed-aspect 4K DCDMs, so I wouldn't be too concerned.

But I think Signore XDTV has got it wrong on this occasion, as in this case it makes no sense to use a completely blown down 35mm IP to create the theatrical 4K master from. For a show shot on five and fifteen perf 65mm adding another generational step to a lower res format when it's not needed seems counter productive. Nolan may be a film junkie, but he's not stupid.

This is originally from the Interstellar site but pasted from in70mm.com re: the digital cinema version:

Quote:
The digital presentation of INTERSTELLAR has been created from 4 and 8k scans of the photochemically- color graded film elements, fine-tuned in the digital realm to maximize the color and contrast attributes of digital projectors, and dust-busted to achieve the cleanest and most stable image presentation possible. The film was mastered in 4k for the highest digital resolution currently available.
[edit]Reading between the lines I'd say that the digital version of Interstellar was composed of IMAX and VistaVision scanned at 8K and 35mm at 4K, so Dunkirk's DCDM should be good for 8K (or 6K minimum) from the original large format elements from start to finish.

Fingers crossed! I wish more directors and studios put forth this much effort into preserving the integrity of the film/image.

On a related note... Mr. Cameron, forget about Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5 and get back to work on restoring 'True Lies', 'The Abyss', 'Terminator', and obviously 'Piranha 2' for 4K. As I recall, T2 and Titanic have already been restored/converted for 4K and are ready for UHD.
