The Martian was one such film where they went back to the 6k and 4k source files, upscaled the SFX to 4k, and then put the film back together for a new 4k master.

Really?

Sony was one of the first studios to release to the format, and their release output has been pretty sharp compared to the other studios (the following is current releases plus some pre-orders):
  • 28 Fox releases
  • 25 Sony releases
  • 25 Warner Bros. releases
  • 17 Lionsgate releases
  • 17 Universal releases
  • 7 Paramount releases

Sony has provided 4K digital copies with all releases (unlike FOX or Paramount which provides only HD digital copies), and I believe Sony gets the award for the most titles released derived from a 4K master.

According to this site it's shot in 5K downgraded to 2K masquerading as 4K. Personally I can't get my head round why they do that especially now 4K is in the home.

I mean hardware/tech wise, and from the top down (I'm talking Kaz Hirai here, the big enchilada himself) they've always been very pessimistic about 4K on disc's chances. Content wise they're all over 4K like a rash (although their 4K finishing HAS been slowing down of late) but they'd much prefer it if these silly disc things went away so they can squirt 4K movies to people directly via OTT services, as they've been doing since they've launched their first 4K TVs. But hey, they've still got their own disc replication plants so they might as well smoke 'em if they've got 'em, amiright?

Splitting hairs perhaps but yes, it was shot 5K because the image circle of the lenses that they used didn't fully cover the 6K RED sensor. The rebuild for the HDR versions sounds fancy but the movie's got a fair bit of VFX threaded throughout which is locked to 2K and has therefore been upscaled, and the image has got quite a noisy look to it in general (high ISO's needed for darker shots) so it was never going to be ultra-sharp eye candy from end to end.

4K Operating Room Movies:

Try not to get to the point where you need heart surgery, be it monitored in whatever resolution, HD or Sony 4K - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAUY_CYG0NU#t=32s

My brother-in-law, who never experienced any left-sided chest pain (his only symptom being occasional mild indigestion noticed days before the event), passed away in his early forties as the result of “the Widowmaker” .

Tomorrow I sit down for Thanksgiving dinner with my niece and nephew , two of the children he left behind when they were still grade school age kids. Luckily, they’ve both adjusted well after their father’s abrupt, unexpected death and thrived socially as well as in their formal education at Ivy League schools.

Note to readers who may think they’re invincible, especially if you’re overweight, have high blood pressure or diabetes:

Be proactive about your heart health and lifestyle by getting a decent non-invasive look at your coronary arteries….http://ktla.com/2015/03/20/dr-matthe...r-documentary/

For SoCal locals, this is (by me) a recommended facility (located on the grounds of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center) for such an evaluation - http://www.calciumscan.com/ . b.t.w., you don’t need a doctor’s order to get a scan.

P.S.
The only talk of “Widowmaker” that I ever want to hear from your friends and families about you, is not of that related to blockage of the left anterior descending artery, but rather thee old hill climb in Utah… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qklwSsBlbk#t=1h7m30s

I misunderstood what you were getting it, but a fair point indeed...

Even though I don't have a 4K TV yet, I went ahead and took advantage of some XBox One S sales this week, and am expecting one in the mail Friday. If the PS4 Pro had offered UHD playback, I'd much rather be getting a PS4 than an XBox, but oh well...

Good news is that the theatrical trailers for Live by Night (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2361317/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tt) have been in 4K.

Same Kind of Different as Me (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1230168/), has received a 4K finish, although the Tech specs are not yet listed at this time if one checks the page…

A momentary pause from endless consumerism (when do the post holiday sales begin?)
For a motion picture to be released in 2017, having an ARRIRAW (6.5K) source format. Does anyone recognize this beautiful actress?

I dont know how I wandered into here, but that's Ana de Armas. I only know this from seeing a War Dogs commercial and asking the same question.
