Of the two 4K blus I watched tonight, The Shallows was easily the more impressive looking of the two.

Mechanic: Resurrection looked good in 4K, but paled considerably when compared to The Shallows in 4K.

Been enjoying my time with 4K blu-rays so far.

The funny thing about The Shallows is it looks great, and is only a 2K DI.

At the end of the day, ‘artistic intent’ rules over the potential horsepower (clarity) of the technical parameter. Be it during principal photography (choice of lenses and lighting) or post production, if the Director and DP so chooses, one can easily make a 4K source less clear and less colorful than a 2K source when the later chooses to leverage all its potential detail to tell the story for viewers.

All that said, this camera debuting at CineGear 2016 was one of the more interesting collaborations of the past year….

People….don’t take excellent vision for granted, as macular degeneration can also occur later on in life (age-related). As I have no personal profit to gain in recommending this, I encourage readers to get and keep your eye exam appointments, be they annual, or whenever your ophthalmologist recommends them.

Heads-up SoCal locals, for this Saturday there is thee annual ASC Open House, and ‘Open’ means open to enthusiasts from all walks of life, needn’t necessarily be a card carrying ASC member.

And another "funny" thing about The Shallows is that it looks colorful and detailed from the regular Blu-ray.

A demo disc, the Fake 4K one, for the palette of colors and sounds and under water immersion and artistic colored waves, blood, skin, rocks, waters, ...all that detailed jazz. It looks almost surreal, like an extra polished and detailed picture. ...Except for that CGI shark. Yeah, when she got rid of that shark it is truly surreal...

Thought for the day….Big numbers: Keep in mind rather than HDR I’m referring to traditional or standard theatrical format dynamic range (SDR) in this particular post. So, with that said, the DCP standard is 12-bit linear which represents ~ 68 billion color shades, whereas…..

16-bit linear files represent ~ 281 billion
color shades. There was feature motion picture (SDR, 24fps) last year that was rather uniquely screened in one theater for the cinema going public at 4K 16-bit color.

Dems a whole lot of shades of colors. The DP for that 4K film spoke locally about it at the USC School of Cinematic Arts this past summer.

^ To be clear, the 4K 16bit master of Café Society was not screened at the USC venue, but somewhere else.

Good to see, as a general rule*, Netflix, instead of low-baring it….encouraging high resolution in their official delivery requirements….

Up-resing of content is prohibited. SD sources can not be used to create HD deliverable. 4K video must come from true 4K source and maintain unity in 4K throughout the entire post production pipeline.....

Reminder, before it sells out, as the HPA retreat is filling up fast….

Presentations include ‘2k, 4k, 8k and the Bermuda Triangle of Depth of Field, Sensitivity, and Sharpness’ by Peter Centen and for HFR enthusiasts there’s a Breakfast Roundtable ‘High-Frame-Rate Masters for Standard-Frame-Rate Production’ by Tony Davis (think Billy Lynn)

I just saw this interview with Storaro: https://britishcinematographer.co.uk...master-part-2/

So Italy was the only screening?

Director Chris Miller posted an image of the first slate for his Han Solo project. From that little information, I'd say they are following the same workflow to Rogue One: Alexa 65 with a 4k DI.

We sure they're shooting Alexa? Could well be RED.

Could be. It's 50/50. Just my assumption. My reasoning: Already established for Rogue One. Bradford Young's last few films have all used Alexas. And there aren't many 45mm lens choices for the Red, but 2 for the Alexa.

AFAIK, yes. The screening on the Paramount lot although not from a DCP, used a 12bit 4K DPX file. Also, to my knowledge there has been no theatrical showing of the HDR version.

I wonder how the upcoming 4K releases for Harry Potter are going to pan out? If they'll be worth the upgrade or not. The current price is $44.99, but I'm sure that'll come down closer to release.

No matter . I figure we’re at about 24 lengths by now (the meaning of this will become clear to all soon in a future post) and unstoppable to the happy day.

Anyway, I hope the free Feb. preview to nonsubscribers includes the whole article on Rogue One for members in all countries reading this because in the past, ACM has limited such previews only to portions of the magazine in order to leverage more as a teaser.

It’s been a good past several months for Greig Fraser, e.g. winning the Golden Frog (http://www.camerimage.pl/en/Winners-2016.html
).....Camerimage, to those unaware, being a prestigious international film festival especially devoted to Cinematography, to where many of the crème de crème have made the pilgrimage to Poland <- see hyperlink for more info.
