^ oddly Dolby mentions on it's master list of Vision / Atmos releases, 'Murder on the Orient Express ' is getting an Atmos mix but not the 'Vision' treatment - for a 65mm shot movie that seems kind of a lost opportunity.

War for the Planet of the Apes got 2K DCPs. It will have a Dolby Cinema 3D release here, so another 2K release.

Just got word back from Haris (DP) he will doing a Dolby Vision HDR grade as well. I am almost certain there will be a Dolby Cinema release...

4k trailer for Awaken, a documentary produced by Terence Malick and Godfrey Reggio, in the vein of Samsara and Koyaanisqatsi:

Dunkirk (2017) - 4096x1716 4K Flat

Quote:
We are writing to you in regards to the presentation ratio of ‘DUNKIRK’.
Filmmakers have finished the DCP in the 2.2:1 ratio.
The active image is 3996x1818 (2.2:1) within a 3996x2160 (1.85:1) container.
The film is intended to play in a FLAT presentation.
For SCOPE shaped screens, see below:
• Present the film in the Flat 1.85:1 aspect ratio
• Open side masking, Zoom lens to fit image top to bottom of screen, leaving bars left and right
• Do not present in the Scope 2.40:1 ratio, this could result in top and bottom of the image being
cropped

Yes, the pdf is rather unique….. http://digitalcinema.bydeluxe.com/si...721_170358.pdf

P.S. You wouldn’t by chance be attending IBC this year?

And despite what some may think, high budget Hollywood productions are not the exclusive realm for Alexa 65 use, e.g. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5360996/

I’ll be there again this year. If you’re in town at the time, shoot me a PM that week and maybe we can get together for lunch or such.

It's because it is 70mm FILM in 18K. People want to see that.
Digital movies can never be as good as film. And people miss the great resolution of film. Digital was a giant leap backward. They are only getting to 6K resolution now. 35mm Film is 8K and 70mm film is 18K.

Cinematographer Steve Yedlin just released this very thorough resolution demo between 6 cameras: http://yedlin.net/ResDemo/

The cameras used:

Arri Alexa 65
Arri Alexa XT
Arri 435 using 4perf super35mm scanned at 6k
Sony F55
IMAX MSM3 using 15perf 65mm scanned at 11k
Red Weapon 6k

Part one is the 10 minute demo itself with multiple scenes shot the same way on the different cameras. Part two is an hour long analysis and detail of all the variables that go into perceived spacial detail, besides just resolution.

For those that are incredibly concerned about the real vs fake 4k debate or those that are opposed to upscaled UHD BDs, I suggest you at the very least watch the first 12 minutes of part two.

On the negative, perhaps. But certainly not on a traditional IP-IN release print, and not even the Dunkirk IMAX showprints run straight off of the 15-perf negative. That said, I'll still take 15K for an IMAX showprint, with 12K for the IP-IN prints.

Having watched the relevant bit of Part 2 (damned internet is too slow to stream it, so I'm downloading it now and will resume later) all I can say is DAYUM, that really should be required viewing for the folks who think they're getting gypped with all these upscales.

Agreed. I had no idea professional upscaling algorithms were so good. Only the most thorough pixel peepers should have any reason for disappointment. I created some screenshots from the downloads.

It's not really about upscaling being so good (even in consumer gear it's excellent), it's that the capture & display medium has reached a level of spatial acuity with 2K that's pretty darned good all things considered, which when combined with the average screen size/viewing distance imeans that 4K just isn't the massive step up in sheer resolution that 4x the pixels is thought of as being.

Me being me I can still see the differences between the 4K and the 2K downrez, indeed they're the sort of minor differences that I regularly waffle on about in my lengthy UHD reviews on here. But it should qualify as a massive eye-opener for every single person who bleats about 2K upscales being a rip off, although knowing the most vocal of the upscale naysayers as I do they'd just turn it around and say "okay then, if there's such a small difference in resolution then what's the point of 4K UHD at all?", to which I'll say "why ask questions to which you already know the answers?". Three letters: H D R.

I wonder what Ray thinks of all this upscaling talk?
