Aw shucks, isn’t this such a friendly *coincidence* to find out before I leave for the land of salmon and bear.

As I’m told a “new member” on another forum resurrects an old Dracula thread from the dead over there at *science* (which apparently had been dead for either two or four years)………shortly after I posted this - https://forum.blu-ray.com/insider-di...ml#post4857203

That’s precious…..I mean thee *coincidence* of it all . I wouldn’t know but, I think contributing to such a thread would be the nerd equivalent to having sex with a corpse.

My reaction to it all is that if after doing due diligence in researching all the public online statements from both the filmmaker responsible for choosing the archival Answer print as the source for that paricular Blu-ray movie, as well as those from the Senior V.P. overseeing the dept.(an Insider on this forum) that transferred the film source to Blu-ray, if said “new member” is still not happy with the explanation/clarification, then I’ll add a visual update which is *Director Approved* -

Exactly! But for some reason people could not see the logic in what you just highlighted. No matter how may times I brought it up.

Hi Penton, we watched the 2010 Karate Kid again over the weekend.. seem to enjoy it more each time we watch it.. i love the blu-ray transfer.. just wondering if there is any talking about a sequel to it with same set of characters/actors etc.. the one thing that still bugs me a little is how its titled the Karate kid.. when all the talk is of Kung Fu... what was the thought process around naming the film The Karate Kid, and using Kung Fu as the martial art? Couldnt it have been Karate?

Cheers,
Mick

In short, to capitalize on the success of the original movies. Naming it The Kung-Fu Kid wouldn't draw in all the fans that naming it The Karate Kid would. At least that's my guess.

I'm sorry Mick, I misunderstood you. I can't be certain, but Will Smith might have addressed this issue in one of the featurettes....I THINK!! I rented this via Netlix so I can't go back and double check.
In any event, I would very much like to see a sequel!
Isn't funny how the original KK took place in the US, and the remake took place in China. Then the oroginal KK pt.2 took place in Okinawa...maybe the remake pt.2 will take place in the US?

Karate = Japanese martial arts.
Kung Fun = Chinese martial arts.

The movie took place in China.

Maybe I am reading into it too much, but the fact that there is now a link on PJ's Facebook page to Bill Hunt's glowing review of the set implies they are saying no issue.

I think no matter what, some are going to complain.
There are 2 impossibilities in life:

2) Pleasing SOME of the people ALL of the time

Probably not the best place to ask, but since it's a recently ongoing discussion.

Is there a way to make current 3D glasses in theaters clear? Do they have to be dark to be polarized like that, or is that a cost cutting measure?

I'm asking because I just took my wife to see Green Lantern. Good film, just needed "more." Don't know if I mean another action sequence, or deeper scripting or what. But I digress. Anyway, my wife is legally blind. She has no vision in one eye (except for light and dark) and extremely poor vision in the other. She spent most of the movie watching it without the glasses on because they made the screen so dark that it was preferable to strain to see a blurry picture than strain to see a dark one. I had a bit of the same problem, but nowhere near that degree.

How are the 3D glasses at Disney World, for example, different? They're also polarized, but they're clear. Would they work at my local theater? If so, where can I buy them?

Also, in regard to the darkness issue, I don't think this was a bulb issue. The theater I was at is generally good about those things. Wouldn't an easier fix be to adjust the image to be brighter so that the image with glasses on looks like a regular movie without glasses?

Probably both, since rarity and quality would affect price.

3D glasses need to filter out light. You're also looking through the same filter to see the needed light. Light is going to look dimmer when looking through a filter than without looking through a filter.

In my personal experience, 3D glasses and display technology have had to compliment each other, and certain brands of "Active Shutter" 3D glasses have produced the clearest "reference quality effect" for vision clarity combined with a display-induced light absorption quality for "maximum" 3D effect.

Talked about this in the "3D Blu-ray Quality?" thread: Link

That's one reason I don't like 3D. The image is far too dim and lacks contrast and "life." 2D is just much more preferable aside from not having to wear glasses.

I guess in this case my specific question would be - Do the clear 3D glasses at places like Disney World work in a RealD theater. If so, without flying to Florida and sneaking a pair into my pocket, is there a place I can buy a pair with clear lenses online? Heck, my wife would be happy with a pair of the 2D glasses Amazon has online if the lenses were lighter.

In regards to the screening of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ which I first mentioned here – https://forum.blu-ray.com/insider-di...ml#post4824814

For those of you who were unable to attend the screening in Hollywood at the home of the Academy (AMPAS) and would like to hear the thoughts of some of the filmmakers involved in that classic film, click here –
http://www.oscars.org/live/index.html

Also, on that note, just this week I was told by a colleague from Paramount that despite it yet not being o n the schedule, there should be another screening of the restoration here –http://plazaclassic.com/schedule.php?css=2 so for any members living around that area of the country, you have another opportunity to watch it on the BIG screen before it makes its way to Blu-ray. There may be more Digital Cinema exhibitions to come, I don’t know, as I didn’t ask….just too busy with other stuff at the Pan Pacific Hotel, sharkshark.

Anyway, back to AMPAS (and its offerings) for a moment, since that was kind of what brought up this whole thing (Raider’s of the Lost Ark). So, I would like to personally congratulate a colleague on his invitation to Academy membership, namely Rob Bredow , and of course all the other invitees –

http://www.oscars.org/press/pressrel.../20110617.html

Might I add, on a more somber note that it was a fine gesture (especially to his family) to include on the list of invitees, the documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in action in Libya earlier this past April.

Hi Mick ,

The *claim to fame*, so to speak, with the post production workflow for The Karate Kid (2010) is that it was a rather cutting edge and atypical post process (for the industry-at-large that is) since it was scanned at 4K and finished in 4K…..meaning, the color grading was done in 4K (on a Baselight Eight). This is of particular significance because even for those modern feature films which are well funded enough to be scanned in 4K at other facilities….many end up being graded using 2K proxies and thusly, are in fact, not completely worked in 4K resolution throughout the digital post production pipeline.

The reason why working in, and remaining in, 4K resolution throughout the entire process (for a Super 35 film acquisition) is the elite way of finishing a motion picture is that the color grading tools are more accurate and precise at that higher resolution…..makes for a better PQ outcome in the end.

I think there eventually will come a day in which most feature films are not just scanned in 4K but also graded in 4K (industry-wide). The industry is just not there….yet. Sony is way ahead of the curve as the facility on the lot can handle ten streams of 4K content simultaneously.

P.S.
Hey, Michel, (from imdb) here’s a belated tip of the hat to the fine work you do for imdb and on that note, thanks goes out to you or one of your colleagues for finally correcting the Tech Specs of The Karate Kid (2010) from 2K to 4K (for the master format), which was originally incorrectly listed as I alerted you and others to back here, months ago –
https://forum.blu-ray.com/insider-di...ml#post3918829

Good job . The tech specs as originally listed (2K) was not the fault of imdb either, but rather, came out of a mis-step from SPHE in as much as someone inadvertently checked the wrong box or some such thing as trivial as that when providing you guys with the Technical information for that particular motion picture. Mistakes will happen.
