Saw it September 2010:

http://filmfest.ca/2010/09/11/rare-e...hristmas-tale/

...and the DVD has been out for a while, I think.

My post was referring to this, INCENDIES, and other films that I've been waiting what feels like YEARS to see on Blu. Makes sense to cash in on holiday season with this one, it's a really great and genuinely scary "kids" movie (in best possible way).

I had the weird and nerdy moment of watching it and thinking, man, there's ONE dude in the world that HAS to see it! Oddly, later that evening, I ran into Guillermo Del Toro and told him about it!

Saw him again this year (at DRIVE premiere) and we laughed about it - he indeed saw it, loved it, and even wrote a quote on the back of the disc!

well, DSLRs are not nearly on the same technical level as the F65 or Red Epic…not to mention the fact that 4k content converted to HD will show a superior image even on an HDTV than original HDTV content (recently attested to by a panel of working post production experts)….and keep in mind for those *2k scans are good enough apologists out there*, that although not exactly the same spatial resolution of the video frame, 2k scans are very close to HDTV resolution (1920x1080).

Nevertheless, technical nitpicking aside, I attended a presentation on Monday by one of the filmmakers for Act of Valor in which he showed stills and video of this upcoming motion picture and he was almost like the Energizer bunny on stage in his enthusiasm for using these acquisition devices for a movie on a strict budget and logistical constraints. So, bottom line, if there are any budding filmmakers reading this thread, who may have previously been hesitant or felt hamstrung about bringing their vision to the big screen…at least in regards to the upfront investment for the camera devices portion of the project…alas, you don’t need to rent or buy a Red Epic, F65, Alexa, etc. as this was all shot with DSLRs (mostly the Canon 5D Mark II), in fact, one 30 page action sequence was shot in 6 or 7? days due to the versatility of the 5D Mark IIs. This is the official trailer -

Hey Penton. In addition to this board, I post on another board, and we have a question about the EPIC and IMAX theater screen. If we were to watch a film shot at 5k resolution on the EPIC on an IMAX theater screen, would the footage take up the entire screen, or would there still be black bars on the top and bottom?

Wouldn't the big factor be the aspect ratio, not so much the resolution?

IMAX screens vary in aspect ratio. However, there's a crucial (but often overlooked) unique philosophical function in IMAX theatre design/installation: IMAX theatre screens are intended not to present a contained image "window" with visible frame-lines, but to present an image that exceeds the limits of peripheral vision. This is why the aspect ratio is allowed to vary (within a usable range) to meet the other design characteristics of the building. In this sense, when designed and executed ideally, an IMAX presentation should technically have 'no' aspect ratio. Or, at least, the functional aspect ratio should be that of the particular field of vision of each individual audience member.

This is the same reason that the IMAX footage in The Dark Knight was presented using the full 16:9 HDTV area, despite the film having been shot with a ratio closer to 1.5:1. The idea is to present information as far as possible in every direction, such that you're not looking at a "contained" picture.

I received a few e-mails (regarding recent blogger activity about another studio’s suboptimal Blu-ray offering out now in the U.K.) and was asked to pass along some advice….

“It’s not nice to continue hitting a man while he’s down especially when he has conceded….for then the noble aspect of it all degrades into self-absorbed attention mongering.”

Glad I'm not involved in the issue other than for a couple of passing posts.

It’s getting more and more difficult as the Holidays approach, things get busy, etc. but I try. The conference was mostly all of a technical nature except for a few occasions in which I could split my attention and multi-task.

You shouldn’t feel too badly about the Cardinals knocking the Phillies out of the NLDS playoffs, as I watched the last half the game last night and they truly are an amazing team.

Now, most recently from some young whipper-snappers reporting out of the parking lot (and their vehicle ) after yet another press event for Titanic in 3D (and 4k 2D availability for those 2D aficionados ), click on and watch the video blog half way down the page….

Warning - the language gets a bit graphic at the very end, unless they've edited since the clip was sent to me.

It was my team 'Sunderland' that kicked off your season. we tend to do that for other clubs. still waiting for our season to kick off though. Especially with Newcastle flying high. Very hard to take!

We got a few periods of snow fall, but mostly rain...and NO accumulation!

Snow this early could be a good sign this winter!!
