I usually just C/P the FRONT QUOTE section.... and then the last section.
That way, it keeps the QUOTED OP's SN... which makes things a lot easier to read when quoting multiple people.... yes, I'm looking at you WickyWoo! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ~Alan |

Apparently on a very small monitor and more importantly, back in the day, they didn’t print the dailies to film to screen them (at least somewhat daily) in a typical theater set-up ……………..until the shoot was completely over and done. ![]() |

I know a scene where I want to slap the focus puller because he ruined the take. Great scene... But I won't apply sharpening. If anything something more refined is required (super resolution technique, a deconvolution filter...) but it will never look as it should. |

It's not a lack of enthusiasm
It's more of a lack of time to devote now that they don't have to counter FUD missles every other day. These people took time out of their already insane schedules to be here, and most of them do pop in when they can |

Robert's comments are quite interesting and bring up an issue that software reviewers, and their readers, must consider all the time.
Patton is a great looking disc by most people's standards but without a master or the film print to compare to, how do you make a reasonable comparison to the way the film "should" look? Sure there are plenty of members that say experience this and that, but honestly memory is a bad indicator most of the time. Besides, how do you know that the other times you saw something that it wasn't altered from the "intended" look as well. You also see a lot of comments on the quality of the encode with many comments stemming from the bitrate meter. Without a side by side comparison to the master how do you honestly know what is an encode issue and what is a master issue. I know in some comparisons I've done with a D5 master the blocking issues that were there were also in the D5. Reviewers are always going to be subjective regardless of the knowledge and experience of the reviewer without something to objectively compare against. Those reviews reflect a preference for one type of image over another. Personally, I try to present my findings based on what I've found the typical viewer to prefer rather than cater only to the nitpicky enthuasist (which I would proudly label myself). I do comment on issues that are apparent (edge enhancement, softening, clipping, etc) but I wouldn't think to slam Patton in a review because I think most people would be MORE than happy with how it looks. Could it be better? ABSOLUTELY! But that could be said about EVERY movie put out today. Heck, display to display variances could change your feeling for a look of a transfer or disc. Penton, any thoughts on Robert's comments and the state of transfers today? I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter! |

As I said before, I don’t know the history of this restoration and I’m hoping that Deci can provide some enlightenment after attending the symposium and speaking with the authority from Fox about this title. At the end, it seems like RAH is saying that one can reduce grain without reducing detail. Grain is random from one image to the next. The way I understand DTS Digital Images, Inc (Lowry) now owned by “Reliance” claim they accomplish this feat is by using information from many frames to create each new image. In essence, the claim is that they reduce grain while at the same time extracting the high frequency detail to build these ‘new’ images. Grain is thusly reduced to a lower and more consistent level while at the same time making for a “sharper” image. |

I’ve got to run to a 1:00 meeting. You bring up some excellent points that maybe Wicky, etc. can comment upon in my absence. I’ll try to address some of your questions later but, I’m really, really overwhelmed now esp. with The Reel Thing XX, The Blade Runner benefit presentation at WB and Cine Gear on the calendar with back to back to back weekends. |
