PS Penton, I was in Dallas this week and watched the Arsenal match on Fat Tuesday in a Cajun Bar...sadly they didn't look good at all. Barcelona outplayed them virtually the entire match (although I think the penalty kick was total BS). |

not as BS as the second yellow for "wasting time" (ONE SECOND!!!)
anyhoo, saw 35mm prints today of QUADROPHENIA and TOMMY - Quad was a rough print, but still a pleasure to see projected. Despite lots of trying, the only print in the world that could be found was in a private collection in Australia - some colour fading/magenta push, but not horrific. TOMMY was an archive print, and looked and sounded FABULOUS. Just ridiculously amazing, like a brand new film, but with beautifully intact grain, rich colours, and lavish production. The BLU is a treat (save for the utter lack of compelling extras, easily found on the R2 DVD), but to see the film projected on celluloid with the Quintaphonic soundtrack was rockin' |

![]() It certainly is yet another wake-up call for all us Californians to be as prepared as we can be for the BIG one as I think the earthquake people predict something like a > 90% chance of us being hit HARD within the next 30 years...and we don't have a warning system like Japan. |

The upsetting thing is that if memory serves, they could have avoided this confrontation (at least at this stage of the Champion’s League) if they had just won their group. ![]() I haven’t watched the FA Cup yet and probably won’t do so until this evening or maybe even tomorrow so, please no hints from anyone. I just hope at this point, we bring some/any silverware home this year. It hasn't been looking good so far. *In it but not to win it*. |

![]() b.t.w., given the Nordic nature ^ of the broadcast location, if anyone desires a recommendation for fine dining in Copenhagen, might I humbly recommend ‘Noma’. Perhaps, KubrickFan has also been there and can confirm. |

I think I can safely say, without stepping on anyone’s toes in another dept. that….it is being discussed but it’s not ready yet.

![]() Hopefully it will include patterns that can be used to quantitatively measure crosstalk/ghosting levels in displays and eyewear. |

Of course, for the pros out there, spectroradiometer measurements of crosstalk correlate most accurately with perceived ghosting but it’s not like Joe 6Pack has these types of optical sensors at home. As an aside, on a theatrical exhibition note, RealD is quite prone to ghosting, so much so that it actually needs a special visual effects pass to control it, which in essence, is a ghost suppression pass. It works by evaluating the crossover level and then pre-compensates for that by subtracting from each eye the known pattern of light expected to leak from the other. P.S. b.t.w., to those 3D neophytes amongst us who may be a bit confused, for practical posting purposes, JamesN and I have used the term crosstalk/ghosting as being essentially the same thing which is why we have ‘ /ed’ it. Both terms are commonly used synonymously and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. To be absolutely technically correct, ‘crosstalk’ is a physical thing and can be objectively measured, whereas, on the other hand, ‘ghosting’ is a subjective term and is the perception of leakage (or crosstalk) of one channel’s information into the other channel’s eye….because of the imperfect separation of each channel. Due to the fact that ghosting is asymmetrical, viewers are quite sensitive to it and it can produce significant retinal rivalry and thusly is one cause of 3D viewing annoyance…or, if severe and prolonged enough, actual physical discomfort can be induced. Now I’m all ghosted out, so please no ghosting questions for awhile. So, in summary, as with a human’s urinary bladder, leakage likewise aint good for 3D displays either. |

I read the question and answer with Grover concerning Taxi Driver and I don’t understand something at all. Grovers says and I quote “By process, I mean a full 4K workflow with no downrezing. Especially scanning at 4K, it preserves the essential resolution of the 35mm negative. The resulting HD master used for the Blu-ray authoring was derived directly from the final 4K files.” That answer makes no sense to me. When you go from 4K to HD (1920x1080) that in fact is downrezing and he says “no downrezing”. I don’t want to sound beligerent but what does he mean exactly or was he misquoted? Also he says and I quote “There were enormous scratches running through some scenes that were difficult to remove. It almost never fails that when a film is scratched, it is right down the middle of a character's face - never way over to the side of the frame as you would hope. So, those kinds of things are difficult to achieve without altering the underlying structure of the emulsion. This film had several things like that wrong with it. Thousands of instances of minus density dirt specs were embedded in the emulsion of the negative, some of which can be removed easily and most not.” My question to you is what specific tool did they use to fix all these scratches and is it something that someone like I can buy or is it some kind of Sony proprietary tool? Thanks again, Eugene. |
