Just remember that there's a difference between "Peter can't see the benefit for Peter" and "No one can see the benefit for anyone" and you'll be just fine.

ANYWAY, it doesn't change the fact that Apple would love to see Blu-ray go away and is introducing products to kill it.

This makes no sense to me at all, if I have no intention of buying, why should I rent a DVD if the Blu-ray is available? I still want to see that film in the best possible picture and sound available at the time. Plus, I watch far too many films in a year to possible buy even a small percentage of them.

It is like me saying if you have no intention of going to see the film in the theatre then you might as well as rent the DVD.

I rent and buy many blu-rays and DVDs depending on what is available for the my tastes of films. But then, I am the consumer without thinking I have an altruistic requirement to support a product.

Just because you have developed your own personal "point of bluray" doesn't mean it fits into what is best for the consumer.

I don't use an iPad but use an Android tablet. But I don't think you will see them fade out in a few years. I think you will see tablets more and more being used in everyday consumer and business life. The iPad as well as many Android manufactures will be used in many business applications and are being developed more and more in this space.

These are not always direct replacements of laptops, but may replace other mobile computer platforms that businesses use.

The popularity of the iPad has gotten itself pushed into areas that they were never intended (air planes, surgical rooms, retail outlets, etc).

I think you will see a continued push of tablets into these functions so I doubt they will go away. I use tablets, and not just iPads as many companies are working in this space. But the iPad maybe leading even though they don't specifically develop a true enterprise type tablet that is rated for shock, drop and high or temp environments. Other companies will specifically make tablets that address these markets.

I think Apple sees the success or failure of Blu-ray as totally irrelevant to what it's doing and any focus on attacking it in the marketplace would be effort and opportunity wasted.

Would it be possible to shelve the whole "blu-ray is being killed off" talk until, ya know, blu-ray is actually being killed off...like in maybe 5 years? Not now when blu-ray is actually, ya know, gaining in sales...both players and movies. Nothing lasts forever I understand that...but my goodness people, just minimize the Concern Trolling. Better yet start your own thread about all the evil empires out there hellbent on bring down blu-ray. I'm sure it will be a hot topic....OR continue to be Concern Trolls and troll the other threads.(I'm pretty sure I know which option you'll choose).

Edit: I just sold my: house, car, and all my clothing because I hear there are new replacement technologies on the horizon for all those items. I'm Concerned!!!

I use my iPad over my laptop and netbook 99 times out of 100. It's faster, lighter, has a better battery, and so far there's nothing that I want to do that I can't do. Games, movies, music, e-mail, work, research, internet, etc.

Some people are automatically averse to 'popular' things. If you haven't tried an iPad, you really have no basis to have an opinion either way. You simply don't know what you're talking about. You can tell yourself whatever you want to in an effort to make yourself feel better (or different, if that's what you're going for), but it's fruitless and transparent.

Go to the Twilight Time thread Penton mentioned. 5 years happened about a year ago where catalog titles are concerned.

This is true of anything that is in competition with packaged media Peter. Apple isn't presenting any more of a case than any other consumer media device that delivers movies. I'd say VUDU is more in line than Apple given its resolution is at least near Blu-ray whereas Apple's iTunes offerings are only 720p.

But since you think Apple is all doomsday about Blu-ray, maybe you should ask Sony (Penton) why they are starting to release digital only releases of their top movies BEFORE the DVD/BD release date on iTunes. With Sony having such a vested interest in BD you'd think the last thing they would want to do is give a special benefit to the company that is trying to kill Blu-ray.

I'm not going to say that the iPAD will always remain "king," because I think the Windows tablets will do very well in the marketplace. However, I wouldn't recommend making any bets about tablet computing going away...

I would have a harder time justifying the expense of a smart phone over the cost of the iPad, and I certainly couldn't justify the cost of a Kindle.

To each their own...

I have no doubt that Apple would PREFER iTunes to gain sales that would go to Blu-ray, but I don't see them as trying to kill it at this time.

5 years is a short time for serious collectors. No bluray = no bluray players = relying on current kit to last = obsolete =stuck with crap alternatives. Hence concern from people.

I couldn't agree more. At the rate that Apple is going right now, it is its own chief competitor. I think it worries more about outdoing itself with each new product over outdoing the competition out there right now.

The newest AppleTV expected to be announced next week should be 1080p capable with 1080p movies available at the same time...

I expect Blu-ray to still be around 5 years from now.

Apple fans were claiming 1080p last year as well, didn't happen.

I can't speak for last year...

All signs are strongly pointing to it this year.

I don't think catalog titles had much of a chance from the get go. How many times are consumers going to line up to pay for the same title for what they may perceive only a small increase in quality. DVD looks pretty damn good on most people's small displays (I consider just about any display less than 70" as small) and catalog titles get to prices that are nearly in the give away category. It is a problem every studio has talked about since the inception of the format.
