But I still think there's going to be some change/pain on the horizon for those of us who've enjoyed 3D with active glasses. There's of course no standard with new UHD displays for transmission of the synch signal from the display to glasses. Will there be a shift to passive glasses? I don't think we even have answers to these kinds of questions yet? Having those 1080 3D BDs play in the new 4k/UHD players is only the first part of the equation.

"Funny," but I started bracing myself for this a long while back. I think this--an exclusivity bundle--is precisely what will happen for the Avatar sequels UHD BDs. I'd bet on it.

lol, you wouldn't be saying that if you didn't already presume that LG OLED had made the cut.

Anyway, that is a fair generic assessment for Joe Public, but point is, I would think given your experience as a home theater ‘enthusiast’ you could determine that vs. the alternative (underachieving brands/models posing as good quality HDR displays) with your own eyes , to begin with, without relying upon Alliance certification….and if you can’t, then might it not be argued that you’re paying for a certification that you personally can’t appreciate anyway, thusly wasting your money or overpaying for a feature.

Cripes ray , you’re already moving the goalposts downfield from the commitment you made several months ago about purchasing an upgraded TV this year (2016). And here I was hoping you’d be starting an OLED Owner’s thread by this fall, latest.

Blu-Ray 3D is display agnostic and works with both passive and active displays. So the move from active to passive 3D will have little if any real effect on 3D. Since there isn't any Ultra HD 3D content and 1080p is the highest resolution 3D available the fact that passive displays half the resolution of 3D is of pretty much no consequence to current 3D content on Ultra HD displays and thus I suspect that's the direction future 3D displays will go

Unlike Samsung, LG tells us the "S" in their new SUHD Displays stands for SUPER!

NEW LG SUPER UHD TV LINEUP SURE TO IMPRESS 2016 CES ATTENDEES

http://www.lgnewsroom.com/2016/01/ne...ces-attendees/

Here is an eye opener!

LG will also take the wraps off its first production-ready 98-inch 8K SUPER UHD TV with plans to begin shipping in the second half of 2016

LG plans to meet the requirements of the UHD Alliance Premium Certification with IPS displays if they can't do it with OLED.

It will be high enough without having to replace it after it burns in

Well, ray, they (Vizio) really don’t need you with an ad campaign like this on USA Today….http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2...sion/78111054/ .

Unless, of course, savvy consumers catch and are turned off by Matt (of Vizio) regarding his assertion of bright explosions and the resultant pupillary response (at least for normal eyes, not one with an RAPD).

Otherwise, I like the Vizio marketing spiel and the content mapping solution to the imagery for consumer flat panels.

I saw that yesterday and decided to give him a pass given that the specular highlights, if treated properly, could cause heightened awareness in the viewer resulting in dilation.

You have a sense of humor and/or you’re being too kind with these marketing executives. Of course, worse are the *challenged* AV writers and bloggers who interview them without questioning the science.

That premise is possibly plausible for those having impaired vision and being eye evaluated with a stimulus 5 rather than the conventional stimulus 3 visual field test (I’ll find you a reference if you’d like when I have more time)…. but I think most peeps think of ‘EXPLOSIONS’ as occupying a rather substantial portion of the screen, e.g.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEJn...utu.be&t=1m40s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVu3...outu.be&t=2m1s

Specular highlights were (and still are) expected to be a very small percentage of the picture area, be it in conjunction with open formal standards like ST 2086 or proprietary metadata.
Heck, we’re not talking a couple explosions on a star field at night with someone suffering from a Marcus Gunn pupil.

Must now go to bed now and count sheep….early flight out of John Wayne to Vegas tomorrow morn.

.
McRae is Vizio's Chief Technology Officer, not a marketing exec.

Do we know yet if HEVC 4K marketing claims have been accurate?

I will be purchasing a 65" 4K display in 2016. Do you all think that after the dust settles concerning these different parameters that the model designations that manufacturers are using now may smooth out a little? I will be going with either a Sony, Samsung or LG and navigating my way through the lineups on line is something else. Hopefully, it's either 1080p or 4K as opposed to UHD, SUHD, etc...

AMD is releasing info on next generation GPUs: Supports Next generation multi-media including VR (openVX), UHD Blu-ray and IPTV (HDR). A modern standard blu-ray drive supports UHD disks (2010 spec Version 2 HD blu-ray).

HEVC encode same as the XB1 for Skype and game streaming.

Study UHD VS HD:

"Participants were significantly more drawn towards content on UHD screens compared to Full HD screens (20 percent difference) – creating a positive emotional reaction

When watching clips for the second or third time, people watching on UHD screens were more drawn to them than those watching them on HD screens (29 percent difference)

During the study, subjects felt 25 percent more ‘in the moment’ when watching something for the first time on the Samsung SUHD TV."

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php...oYYlm1WvveW.99

Leaves me wondering what the results would have been had they used other brands of UHD displays in their research.

To be fair, Vizio is pretty much a marketing company for Chinese sourced panels.
