I watch blu-rays on my computer using an external blu-ray drive.
Will the drive be able to read UHD Discs?

Won't the drive just need a firmware update?

Will the playstation 4 be able to play blu-ray discs?

I have just read this: http://www.tvnewscheck.com/playout/2...-sound-system/

I nearly had an heart attack at first I thought DTS had completely abandoned DTS X, it had to be an April Fool's joke, then I realized they were talking about ATSC.

It may not work.
UHD BD will use triple layer discs, something I think the PS4 is incapable of reading

it's not just a matter of codecs, the physical properties of the disks will be different.

the PS4 definitely wont' be able to play them until they build in that capability with the upcoming hardware refresh, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

The hardware refresh will probably add an up-scaling engine for blu-rays and native 4K streaming support, but I strongly doubt it will feature a UHD blu-ray drive.

Before the PS4 came out they said that it would be able to stream 4k. I'm still waiting for that. I refuse to buy that $700 media player that looks almost exactly like a PS4.

their plans changed. they've said as recently as December that there's no plans to make the PS4 support any kind of 4K through software or firmware updates.

The device is due for a hardware refresh this year or next though, so I don't see why they would bother updating now.

If it's streaming you want, then the Roku 4 should be out this month and it's rumored to have 4k support.

Bails, I’m quite relieved to learn that, as we never would have guessed.

I think thee tomfoolery would have been a bit more effective in toto; if instead, they’d formed the tomfoolery around some otherwise unknown outrageously inconvenient or expensive aspect of the Next-Generation Secure Memory Initiative.

Heck, I thought there was little doubt that it was an April fools joke, but I did bother to click on it the day after to confirm that it was.

I wish they would.

It's just DTS' usual "we go to 11 over Dolby's 10" format. There is no benefit other than a format war.

If you have a BDXL drive there is a outside chance it could play them but you would need a UHD player software for playback. You would also need a compatible video card.

I Agree a BDXL player is about the only thing that could possibly work with UltraHDBD, however, I have a feeling that the colour of the laser will change, Sony were working with people who had a better laser than the blue one found in Blu-ray players that was in the violet range of colours, I wouldn't be surprised to see this implemented. If it is then it is likely that nothing will work with it even BDXL DRIVES.

PS4's might already have BDXL drives already in them for UHD Blu ray playback on the future.

For those not following 'NSM', I’m referring to SeeQVault with Ultra HD Blu-ray players…..the idea being to make the whole digital copy process much easier with Ultra HD Blu-ray than it is today with existing Blu-ray and DVD.

Wow, is that the digital bridge they mention from time to time? Sounds very James Bond whatever it is. If that technology was applied across the entire entertainment industry CD's in particular, there would be no need for laws which allow you to copy CD's. I can't see the pirates liking it much especially if they think about it the way I just were. Is SeeQVault a dead cert for Ultra HD Blu-ray?

Software is not a problem. I'm sure the likes of Cyberlink PowerDVD will have this out in no time.

What's somewhat troubling now is that it wasn't specifically mentioned that UHD BD will use BDXL. The 66GB disc is dual layer, while 100GB is triple layer.

As far as I know, all current BD players are only capable of reading 50GB discs only. If 66GB were possible, we should have seen it by now. Even on PS4 games, because developers were struggling to compress their games onto a 50GB disc.

So it's unlikely the PS4 will play UHD BD. An updated PS4 console may do it in the future.
