Interesting video though I noticed some obvious issues. There is no set EOTF for REC709. That is one of the issues many have with it. As an example Blu-ray titles are sometimes mastered with a gamma of 2.2 or 2.4 or using BT1886. Furthermore there is no way to actually know which one was used which creates problems on the playback side. This can result in pictures looking darker or brighter than they should depending on which was used for mastering and which was used for visual playback.

I also think he has some things backward on the full range signal part. Reference white is digital 235 and he is correct that some latitude should be left after that (mainly to avoid clipping in the chroma channels before 235) but he then states that one may want to INCREASE contrast to verify; this should be decrease as increasing contrast on a display will continue to clip at a lower level, not a higher one.

I'm hoping the gamma (EOTF) standards are firmed up more with the new UHD standard so there is no guessing on the users end. It would be nice to know EXACTLY what colorspace is being used (709, P3, 2020), what the gamma is and what the master resolution is (since UHD can be something other than 4K).

No one knows yet - don't expect it to be any more than single figures.

The hell you say, people have been interested in that sort of viewing since ‘08…

Good luck tomorrow.

Not sure about "quid" but a decent BD player in the USA is about $100. So I'm thinking $300-$500 will be the range at intro.

Us Brits always get a bad deal when it comes to new technology - my guess is £30 initially, but prices should drop before Christmas.

Hey, I don’t agree with everything they’ve present/recommended either….http://digitalbacklot.netflix.com/20...tion-best.html

Where have you been ? For Christmas, did you ever get it -> https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...n#post10146912

If not, I’ll remind you that there is more woods riding (and racing, à la enduros and ISDTs) contained in that one Blu-ray movie than all of On Any Sunday and On Any Sunday – The Next Chapter, combined, not to mention real life challenges like coping with losing one’s wife to cancer and having children to raise.

Well Iron Man was released in 2008, which was 2 years after Blu-rays first came out.

Some reporter-type should simply ask ‘will there be a requirement to *online authenticate* any Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, just in order to play it?

Of course, even if the answer to the question is "No", as another member has noted, once you’ve bought a player… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post10809360 over time, they may have you by the short hairs….or so they presume.

I dont care if they charge £35 as long as they do a very good job on remastering old classics

If the format lives on, you better believe you'll see new and improved releases of better selling titles.
I only upgrade once per format (if I want to see it again). Upgrading for marginal PQ improvement or just to get lossless is a waste of money to me. The upgrade from DVD to Blu-ray is anything but marginal (normally speaking). I passed on the Goodfellas double dip because I know it's coming out early in UHD. Double dips are usually not huge improvements within a format, at least not enough to spend yet another $15-20 on a disc you'll probably once watch once. Besides, how many times do we need to rewatch these movies anyway? Just because they get re-released people feel a need to buy it watch it again, all the while on passing on other worthwhile movies they haven't discovered yet.

So anyway, if it's not "full" UHD (HDR and 10 bit color at minumum, other than the obvious resolution bump), then I'll probably skip over those and buy the ones that are. Besides, the upgrades not related to increased resolution will be the most noticeable.

I agree, the main thing I look for in a double dip on the same format is an extended edition of the film and I'm talking Alien 3 assembly cut extended and not a couple of seconds more.

Guess what? 100 "bucks" equals £63 at current rates, so we're approaching this from the same angle after all.

That said, the bastards will do what they always do and simply change the dollar sign into a pound sign, so instead of £190-£320 (as per the rate of exchange) they'll be £300-£500 over here. ****s.

$300-500 for a launch player? Dream on. It will probably be $800-1000.
