The major question is whether the major disc replicators will end up investing in a 100GB/TL capability, at some point, since they see it as a commercially non-viable solution. That's not a good outlook to start out with but it begs the question how many 100GB discs the BDA thinks they might sell over the life of UHD BD compared to how many would need to be sold just to recoup the technology development costs.
The other question is whether Sony's internal solution will be made available to other studios. That is, will Sony offer it as an option at their DADC replication plants or will this internal solution only be available for Sony titles. Also, what is really meant by an "internal" solution. |

And you're right about that caveat with Sony's 100GB line and how it won't be made "commercially available" according to the BDA 45 minutes. Does that really mean they'd keep it solely for their own UHD discs? Or perhaps the cost they'd charge to use it on top of the 100GB premium (re: more expensive blank media and low yields) would make it too expensive for outsiders to use? In which case we really would end up with $40-$50 discs, which would be commercial suicide. |

Here's something DTS X related: http://www.thehdroom.com/bluray/ex-m...is-july-89621/
Apparently DTS X will debut on Ex-Mechina. I know it's not Ultra BD related but it could mean Ex-Mechina is a launch title. |

Since Dolby was first to market with Atmos and most immersive capable dubbing/mixing stages have Atmos speaker layouts... DTS decided that the easiest thing to do would be to let DTS:X map to those same locations. If DTS gets the upper hand again, then they may start recommending certain specific layouts. |

All I'm saying is if they had provided a layout I would have had them installed this August ready for Christmas. As it stands I'm waiting until I see the number of channels on the back of the Ultra BD cases. Last edited by bailey1987; 05-26-2015 at 04:59 PM. |

I have given up paying the surcharge for them if it's a post convert which I believe Mad Max: Fury Road is so I saw it in 2D at a local theatre that looked like my Kuro. Poltergeist was the last film I saw(terribly boring) I went 2D with that as well and whilst watching it I couldn't see a scene that would benefit from 3D but I'm in the mob that wants things to come our of the screen at you and not the depth camp.

All home video soundtracks can render to that same number of designated speakers, it doesn't matter which immersive encoded movie you choose. 2014 and 2015 mass consumer receivers and pre-amps can only process up to 11.1 or in other words, 7.1.4. 7.1 + four overhead. Install your speakers as per the Dolby Atmos home recommendations and DTS:X content will render to the same locations. This is a known fact. |

![]() They're writeable discs, not intended for consumer use or formats. If they ever do have a need for a 300GB consumer format, then of course they may draw from some of the technologies and specs of the archival disc. But for now it's of no interest or relevance to consumers. |
