Since they are probably going to have combo 4K BD/BD, then maybe on the 3D titles they will offer another SKU that also has a 3D version? (4K/3D/2D) Perhaps in lieu of the regular 3D/2D package?
For example, Avengers: Ultron, Minions, Jurassic World and Inside Out (maybe) are coming out soon in 3D. If those movies were coming out next year on UHD BD, I wouldn't want to be forced to choose between 4K and 3D. |

Also I don't think IMDb is the most reliable source for information about 2K/4K masters. Samsung put Life of Pi and Star Trek Into Darkness on their HDD UHD video pack and both look better than the Blu-ray. Especially the IMAX scenes on Into Darkness. Transformers 2 is also just listed with a 2k DI on IMDb but a special feature on the Blu-ray clearly says the CGI in the IMAX scenes was rendered in 4k. Yes... The first announced of a HD successor to DVD was made in 2000 or 2001. The name Blu-ray was announced shortly after that but the first discs came out in 2006. Shortly after that UHD was announced. It will take some time until 8k TVs are even available. And most movies both shot digitally and on 35mm max out at about 2.5K to 5K - so 8K is useless for those. Just as long as the transfer is up to scratch, the last thing we need is sub-standard transfers, like a few of the BD releases we have got over the years. The studios have got to get this right straight out of the Box, no sub standard transfers, otherwise it will hurt future sales. |

Panasonic also has an UHD Blu-ray player at the IFA in Berlin!
Sorry, I can't find an English source for this: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldu...r-2805018.html The pictures are bad because Panasonic doesn't want any pictures to be taken (yet). The article implies that Panasonic could have a player ready by the end of the year but it wouldn't make sense to sell them because UHD discs won't be available by then... |

Maybe Philip Dhingra over at Real 3D or Fake 3D could add Real UHD/4K or Fake UHD/4K to his site. Anyone know Philip? If so, consider making this request of him.

So? 12 minutes of IMAX footage does not a >2K master make. IMAX is such a high quality system that the CG must also be of a suitably high resolution for 15/70 exhibition (I've seen figures of 5.6K and 8K also used w/ref to VFX for native 15/70 footage), this is because the DI is bypassed for the 15/70 scenes which are filmed straight out to large format negative from the high-rez VFX files.

This is a development prototype of the Ultra HD Blu-ray™ player compatible with the next-generation Blu-ray standard, adopting the latest technologies like 4K and High Dynamic Range" (so not a production unit). Samsung is saying their player will be shipping in early 2016. Hopefully Panasonic and/or Sony will come thru with products late in 2015. Perhaps their announcements will be at CEDIA Expo next month. Now, I wonder if the first titles will be on 66 GB with lesser quality compression or if small enough batches are being stamped due to low expected support for now, 100 GB discs right from the start. Fox was one of the first with 50 GB discs at Blu-ray's debut. |

Still, that'd be some combo version: UHD BD, 2D BD, 3D BD, DVD + digital. The mere thought of it being split up and sold on eBay is probably giving Disney nightmares. ![]() |

I'm sure the player designs are making their way to the manufacturing plants and whichever studios are going to start at launch are prepping their glass masters for the stamping facilities, otherwise early/first quarter 2016 isn't going to happen either.

Sure, but the DI itself was 2K. As with all the other 2K finishes shot on something which can resolve more resolution (35mm, RED etc), it depends on whether the corporate will is there to pull the original material and/or archived scans of said material and to remaster it in 4K. If UHD really takes off then such rebuilds will become more likely, but for the moment it's upscale city.
