If they don't release a 2K 3D UHD SKU of movies with 3D versions on the new format, then it going to force people to choose between 4K BD and 3D BD. I'd choose the 3D BD version unless it's a bad conversion.

Most of the top blockbusters do have a 3D version, so what are they going to do?

Since they are probably going to have combo 4K BD/BD, then maybe on the 3D titles they will offer another SKU that also has a 3D version? (4K/3D/2D) Perhaps in lieu of the regular 3D/2D package?

For example, Avengers: Ultron, Minions, Jurassic World and Inside Out (maybe) are coming out soon in 3D. If those movies were coming out next year on UHD BD, I wouldn't want to be forced to choose between 4K and 3D.

Well, as you can see in some of the pictures there are HDMI and power cables connected to the player. Of course this could be fake but I think the risk of someone pressing the pause button with nothing happening would be to great. You can also see that the disc tray just has a normal Blu-ray logo. So my guess is they put some UHD demo clips on a BD25/BD50 and repeat them over and over. Those will probably only be a few minutes long - space enough for that on a normal Blu-ray.

When Fox announced a while ago that they are going HDR most of these movies were already released. Maybe they went back to the 2.5K/2.8K sources for that? Theoretically you can upscale 2.5K content and create 4K CGI. But I doubt they put so much effort into these titles.

Also I don't think IMDb is the most reliable source for information about 2K/4K masters. Samsung put Life of Pi and Star Trek Into Darkness on their HDD UHD video pack and both look better than the Blu-ray. Especially the IMAX scenes on Into Darkness.

Transformers 2 is also just listed with a 2k DI on IMDb but a special feature on the Blu-ray clearly says the CGI in the IMAX scenes was rendered in 4k.

Yes... The first announced of a HD successor to DVD was made in 2000 or 2001. The name Blu-ray was announced shortly after that but the first discs came out in 2006. Shortly after that UHD was announced. It will take some time until 8k TVs are even available. And most movies both shot digitally and on 35mm max out at about 2.5K to 5K - so 8K is useless for those.

In all Honesty, I don't care if they come in bright Pink.

Just as long as the transfer is up to scratch, the last thing we need is sub-standard transfers, like a few of the BD releases we have got over the years.
The studios have got to get this right straight out of the Box, no sub standard transfers, otherwise it will hurt future sales.

Panasonic also has an UHD Blu-ray player at the IFA in Berlin!

Sorry, I can't find an English source for this:
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldu...r-2805018.html

The pictures are bad because Panasonic doesn't want any pictures to be taken (yet). The article implies that Panasonic could have a player ready by the end of the year but it wouldn't make sense to sell them because UHD discs won't be available by then...

Maybe Philip Dhingra over at Real 3D or Fake 3D could add Real UHD/4K or Fake UHD/4K to his site. Anyone know Philip? If so, consider making this request of him.

So? 12 minutes of IMAX footage does not a >2K master make. IMAX is such a high quality system that the CG must also be of a suitably high resolution for 15/70 exhibition (I've seen figures of 5.6K and 8K also used w/ref to VFX for native 15/70 footage), this is because the DI is bypassed for the 15/70 scenes which are filmed straight out to large format negative from the high-rez VFX files.

"Ron Martin, VP of Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory has told What Hi-Fi? that the industry is planning to reveal the first products in September.

A September launch is designed to ensure Ultra HD Blu-ray hardware and discs are in shops and available to buy in time for Christmas.

Asked about the Ultra HD Blu-ray release date, Martin said: "Certainly for Panasonic, and most manufacturers, by IFA time in September we want to have players showing content. By holiday season, we want these to be available."

IFA is the biggest consumer electronics show in Europe and gets under way on 4th September."
Samsung has a Ultra HD Blu-ray being demo'ed at IFA that officially starts today, but it appears no announcements or demos from Sony. Panasonic's press release mentions "Ultra HD Blu-ray™ Player (reference model)
This is a development prototype of the Ultra HD Blu-ray™ player compatible with the next-generation Blu-ray standard, adopting the latest technologies like 4K and High Dynamic Range" (so not a production unit). Samsung is saying their player will be shipping in early 2016. Hopefully Panasonic and/or Sony will come thru with products late in 2015. Perhaps their announcements will be at CEDIA Expo next month.

If there are no discs, they'll hold off until 2016 as well. The standards were not ready in time for a 2015 debut, which many of us thought was true.

Now, I wonder if the first titles will be on 66 GB with lesser quality compression or if small enough batches are being stamped due to low expected support for now, 100 GB discs right from the start. Fox was one of the first with 50 GB discs at Blu-ray's debut.

Not going to happen IMHO. UHD BD is clearly not ready at all. From the Packaging of the intended media to the 2 Prototype players being shown by both Samsung and Panasonic, nothing is even close to ready.

This thread title does need to change

Well, Bay did shoot anamorphic 35MM for the non-IMAX scenes, so the resolution is there to be had in the original photography.

I think you're gonna be forced to choose, Brucie old bean. There's no scope for enhanced 1080p 3D in the UHD BD spec, never mind 4K 3D. Putting all them in one package would only add to the premium cost of the UHD pack seeing as 3D prices are still holding firm. Multiple UHD SKUs (one with the 3D disc, one without) will also be more of a hindrance than a help, especially in places where BD shelf space is already somewhat limited (like in the UK).

Still, that'd be some combo version: UHD BD, 2D BD, 3D BD, DVD + digital. The mere thought of it being split up and sold on eBay is probably giving Disney nightmares.

I'm sure the player designs are making their way to the manufacturing plants and whichever studios are going to start at launch are prepping their glass masters for the stamping facilities, otherwise early/first quarter 2016 isn't going to happen either.

Yeah, don't be shocked if discs are $35 - $40 a pop, especially if they sneak a 1080p Blu-ray in the pack.

Sure, but the DI itself was 2K. As with all the other 2K finishes shot on something which can resolve more resolution (35mm, RED etc), it depends on whether the corporate will is there to pull the original material and/or archived scans of said material and to remaster it in 4K. If UHD really takes off then such rebuilds will become more likely, but for the moment it's upscale city.

Isn't the PS4 meant to be getting an upgrade/new sku released to be able to play 4K movies?
