Someone at IFA needs to open the tray on the new Samsung UHD player to see what's in it. There are demos playing on the displays behind the players. What is the actual source for those demos?
Wouldn't surprise me if the actual source is a WD Cinema Pasport. ![]() http://www.wired.com/2015/09/samsung-4k-blu-ray-player/ Last edited by raygendreau; 09-04-2015 at 03:57 PM. |

I don't think there'll be DVD in there anyway, I was just spitballing as to what an ultimate combo would be. But I still can't see 3D being in there unless people want a $50+ recommended retail price, 3D is still sold at a premium so bundling it in with the newest premium BD format would only make the package even more expensive. And joking aside it really would be an eBay splitter's dream, so don't be surprised if the studios are reticent to embrace such a combo.

What a nice sleek looking player from Samsung. If I had the money I would buy it instantly.
Have the studios said anything to the media on the issue of region codes for UHD Blu-ray titles? It will be a good idea for their new customers to know that bit of information before it is released next year. |

Samsung players are notoriously bad. I'm sure Panasonic and Sony will have alternatives around the same time. |

Life of Pi and Days of Futures Past both have been released on fantastic Blu-Ray 3Ds with great Native 3D presentations. Unless you are stereo-blind or just have a massive hatred of 3D I can't imagine why anyone would prefer an a 2k sourced transfer in 2D given how great both movies 3D aspects were. Until a 3D option is added I see no point in releasing these titles on this new format Why release 2k sourced titles when there are hundreds of great movies shot on film with no 2k DIs to speak of and never made for 3D that would be fantastic releases on this format? I think they are dropping the ball selecting launch titles that simply can't make full use of this format |

If this was accurate, the same process might be used for a higher res source cut on a lower res DI. Oh course that would be meaningless if the source was 2K, but as others have said there will be benefits in the 4K realm for 2K, minor as they may be. |

I'm curious about the 2K masters on the launch titles as well. I'm wondering how correct that actually is. It's entirely possible that these films exist in the computer as 4K, but were output to their master as 2K. They could possibly be doing a new export in 4K.
Some of them were shot with 2.6K ArriFlex cameras, but even that is still a pretty big difference from old 1080p blu-ray. I'm not quite ready to light the torches yet on the news, because to me it does just seem too bad to be real. I suspect there's more at play behind the scenes than we're seeing. |

But it can and has taken advantage of Blu-Ray 3D so I see a re-release on this format a complete waste of money no matter what |

I know that they're trying to get people hyped about mostly new releases, but what they really need to do if they want to release movies that will look mindblowingly good in 4K is release David Fincher's movies he shot with Red cameras.
I would re-buy The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, and Social Network (provides it was a proper 4K remaster) in a heartbeat. |

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo remake was one of the first with a 4k workflow end-to-end. The Social Network had a similar pipeline since it was also a David Fincher film. |

Fincher is the undisputed master of digital filmmaking at the moment.
I've said it I don't know how many times before, but the rowing scene in Social Network is basically a 2 minute long Master's Class in digital filmmaking. |

minor pet-peeve though. Dragon Tattoo is NOT a remake. The film was in pre-production before the Swedish version was finished, and the screenplay was written from scratch directly from the English translation of the book. |
