You know streaming atmos is not the same as real atmos right....
And again, the hardware can use dts.
Oh and like dts there is no streaming atmos content

The hardware can't decode DTS. Not supported.

As for streaming Atmos:

AVF had a chat with one of the BDA bods: https://www.avforums.com/article/the...-blu-ray.11917

Nothing too earth-shattering - and no questions about online authentication - but there are a couple of bits in there that I hadn't seen mentioned previously: the current ABC region coding will be maintained (it's up to the content providers to lock or not, natch) and that the digital export version will be 1080p, not 4K as one might've thought (though they are looking at that aspect of it). Oh, and it's basically confirmed that Christmas is out for the launch, they're gonna go balls out at CES instead, which I've been saying for ages.

I used to be a hater too, until I got sucked in to the Dark Side. Now I'm just another mindless zombie.

They're basically doing the same stupid things that hurt regular Blu-ray in the first place.

1) Region Coding
2) Dumbed down managed copying ... basically no studio will utilize it. It was a part of Blu-ray too, but never allowed to happen.
3) Probably forced previews and other junk that make discs so annoying.

If they now add on online authentication to the mix they'll have pretty much made the format still born.

Perhaps that's what they wanted to do in the first place.

Well, that and the fact that you're buying the 21st Century version of Blood Diamonds...

how can you argue that region coding hurt blu-ray, when blu-ray region coding is considerably less restrictive than DVD region coding?

Trouble is the manufacturers & content providers (sometimes one and the same) are only ever looking after themselves and whatever bespoke systems & patents can make them the most money. That's always been the case, to be sure, I'm not stating anything new! But the point is they have to be dragged kicking and screaming to agree on one unified standard and in this case I'm not sure many of them even wanted it, not when they can squirt their 4K movies down the Internet and cut out the middle man.

It amused me that the BDA gentleman interviewed by AVF said that all the major manufacturers were on board simply because they're part of the BDA, but that doesn't strike me as being the same thing as having an outward commitment to the format...

this is not true at all. Companies already struggle with grey market imports, movies are no different, and possible worse.

Without region coding a lot of movies simply wouldn't get released in emerging markets like China and India at all.

Region coding is a complete non-factor in this day and age.

Hopefully the next round of region coding will be as easily avoided as this one.

I think businesses just use region codes as a way to make up for their laziness.

John Wick ismout Monday in the UK from Warner Bros.
This is why region codes exist, licencing deals and staggered dates.
