Nail in the coffin for the PS4 which makes Sony seem very stupid which I don't think they are.
In what conceivable way is this a nail in the coffin for Sony? The PS4 is performing phenomenally well! With as much of a niche-of-a-niche as UHD BD is destined to be, I can't fathom how this is ringing the death knell of the console.

How you can follow being so wrong about the PS4 supporting Ultra HD Blu-ray via a firmware update (which you previously said was not speculation and instead insisted was 100% certain) and then start down the same path with the Xbox One is beyond me.

Maybe I'm just naive, but when it comes to what's technically possible, and my choices are:

1) Sony, speaking about their own console and a not-yet-released variation of a format they spearheaded
or
2) Jeff Rigby, who's read some whitepapers

...I'm more inclined to believe Sony's evaluation. Maybe they're misinformed, but it seems more likely that there's just more to this situation than we know at the moment.

Yeah, who wants a 20+ mill install base to deliver their product?

The point is we have one guy at Sony making this statement and in the past one guy at Sony has been dead wrong.

Read the article and understand Sony does not allow employees to make such statements like new performance PS4s in the market with regular PS4s. Think about that for a minute. Sony internal secrecy is well known.....

Your edit: "it seems more likely that there's just more to this situation than we know at the moment." That is possible and Sony secrecy always compounds errors in interpretation or speculation.

The PS4 is performing well as a AAA game console but shortly (2016-) sales due to Media HUB features will trump the number of AAA gamers.

Got a point.

Gamer... I'll just wait until Sony releases their newer PS4 model before getting a PS4 so I can watch UHD Blu-ray.

Yeah, they'd never publicly state that.

People saying the ps4 HDMI out is a standard 1.4 port need to read up.
That thing is super custom

Masayasu Ito isn't some random, low-level Sony employee, though.

What???

You really think that PS4 is gonna stop selling because of UHD Blu-ray or media features???

If people want a 4K media player they can get the new amazon fire tv for less than 100$

IMO BDA and hardware manufacturers are creating a disc format that nobody asked for...

The first thing they should have done was getting the 6 movie majors (Warner, Universal, Disney, Fox, Sony, Paramount) on board right away before even thinking about players and discs production.

Only Fox has shown a little support so far.....
I've heard it be said more than once that until the UHD Alliance has all their recommendation ducks in a row, most of the major studios will wait to announce UHD title support.

I would also expect much more positive or negative movement at CES. If UHD Blu-ray is coming around the first quarter, that expo would be the place for the grand unveiling.

YOU aren't everyone.

Why participate in a thread for a format you have no interest in? Except to fling poo?

Neither are you. It's the mass market that makes the difference. There's no demand at all for another disc format, that's not up for discussion. Look at blu-ray sales compared to DVD and imagine that number shrank 3 times...

I participate because I have a PS4 and was willing to give it a shot maybe if the format was compatible. But BDA can't do anything right, it seems

I'd imagine though the UHDA would want actual discs sold to buying customers & what better way to kickstart a format *cough*PS3*cough* then to take advantage of the already installed user base.

You can apply that maxim to a lot in my life of late!
Maybe some firmware will fix it, maybe
