Can anyone help with a question regarding 4K UHD blu-ray and 3D?
I know that 3D isn't part of the format's specs, but is it still possible hardware manufacturers and media producers can collude on an approach to offer 3D capability - above and beyond those specs? Desk |

Thanks, guys - that's helpful.
I'm under the impression that 4K UHD blu-ray releases will, at least initially, also come with 1080p blu-rays bundled in. However, I'd imagine that these 1080p blu-ray releases are unlikely to be 3D versions. On that basis, I don't feel so bad about buying new standalone 1080p 3D blu-rays such as Mad Max: Fury Road, as it appears this is the only format 3D's likely to be available in. Desk |

AMD has VR/AR support mentioned with Arctic Islands dGPUs coming next year (2016) and following that with APUs late 2016 to 2017. FYI Windows 10 will support UHD blu-ray using standard blu-ray drives provided you have a modern dGPU with a TEE or a APU with TEE (HDCP for the HDMI port takes place in the TEE). XB1 and PS4 also decode and HDCP in their TEE's. Last edited by jeff_rigby; 12-22-2015 at 11:19 AM. |

I really want classic films on this format. Modern 3D blockbusters are wasted on this format. It seems technology has regressed in recent years as far as video resolution is concerned as your favorite titles from the 70s or 80s will benefit from this format while most recent blockbusters much less so |

Probably the one exception would be the original Predator. The Blu-Ray 3D conversion was Ok but I would dump it in a second for a proper 4k film master that didn't smooth over all the grain. But honestly that's the only Blu-Ray 3D title I own where I would ever consider a 2D Ultra HD version an upgrade |

And 3D is not as bankable as it once was. That fad is slowing fading. Not a 3D fan myself. Bad for cinematography and a lot of people get eye strain and headaches. |

I'm no 3D fan either, but it's far from dead; UHD players will almost certainly play those 1080p 3D disks. It's ironic that it took a 4k OLED TV for me to appreciate 1080p 3D. |

If you want a feeling for the marketplace: they were sure not "into" 3D at CEDIA. Not something they even really brought up much. It was 4k. Better colors. Better dynamic range. HDR. Immersive Audio. Etc. Etc. And "oh yeah... 3D... um..." Absolutely the same talking points are making the rounds at cinema distribution trade shows. Is there a possibility of a resurgence in 3D tech once Avatar 2 comes out...? Sure. Last edited by FilmFreakosaurus; 12-26-2015 at 05:07 PM. |

They are still milking the cow, and the cinema's went to 3D projectors so they want to make that money (I think 3D in the theater is still marketable). Home 3D, especially active glasses, meh... If I was going to see Star Wars in the theater, it would surely be 3D.
I did home 3D on calibrated displays from 2011-2013. I'm over it, as I think is the majority. Blu-ray is still a small market, and 3D blu is even smaller. |

Now, as I mentioned above... it is possible that good 3D instead of most of the post converted stuff that has been foisted on the public could spark a renewed interest in the technology. Cameron is one of the few filmmakers who takes the time to shoot 3D with care, precision, and a real 3D camera rig. |

I still think even with properly shot 3D (Bayformers Dark of the Moon looked great in home) you are fighting an uphill battle. Just like UHD Blu will be.
This is becoming a soundbar streaming generation, people with nice setups that care about PQ and AQ are not in the upper tier. 3D Blu almost requires a disc purchase, as will UHD Blu (unless Netflix surprised me) and sometimes expensive accessories. Most of the people I know love my setup, but still rent DVD's from redbox and arent willing to pay the 3D upgrade at the local theater. |

Blu-ray didn't have path way for 3D so what does Ultra HD Blu-ray not having path way for 3D have any matter |

I don't think that's going to be happening any time soon, do you? That's why only 1080p 3D is supported on UHD Blu-ray. |
