So they can release a couple titles at a high price and then when they don't sell a billion copies pull their support without explanation. Yeah Disney is no friend to new technology

Will Dolby Atmos on UHD Blu-ray be any better than it is on current Blu-rays, or will it have the same specifications?

Sony Consumer Electronics announced today that Sony Pictures 4K HDR movies can be downloaded on all 2016 Sony Bravia 4K TVs.

John Archer Tweet: " Just witnessed Panasonic's UB900 Ultra HD Blu-ray player running Mad Max: Fury Road & Lego Movie in 4K HDR on new Panasonic DX900 TV "

Robert, can you find out if they are feeding the player a consumer UHD BR disc or a file on a USB?

I would also be curious to hear any comments about the optional Digital Bridge for either Panasonic or Samsung future UHD players.

Both the Panasonic and Samsung players shown at CES 2016 appear to be "bare bones" models put out there tentatively to test the market. (not that there is anything wrong with that)

That's a good question. I assume it can be a higher bitrate, right? Hell, just having Atmos on every UHD release would be an improvement.

I have not seen where they intend on upping audio bitrates on UHD over standard Blu.

^ Robert, regarding the UHD Sony downloads to the Bravia TVs. Is this via an FMP-X10 or does this tie in somehow to the Kaleidescape store? Sony mentioned a new streaming app in their press conference, not downloads.

Since Blu-Ray atmos tracks are already lossless upping the bitrate wouldn't do jack. A higher bitrate generally benefits video because all video on Blu-Ray is lossy but once something is at a lossless level upping the bitrate becomes pointless

There is still "compression" involved I think. The DTS Master spec is up to 24 mbps, and generally you see around 4 or 5 on a blu-ray. I do not guess lightening the compression would change anything?

Or is it already an exact replica at 4.5 mbps?

"Panasonic says that it has developed a new “4K High-Precision Chroma” processor in collaboration with its Hollywood lab. Even though the UHD Blu-ray standard brings improvements on several fronts it still uses chroma subsampling to compress color information. The processor converts movies from 4:2:0 chroma to 4:4:4 (full RGB) before the signal leaves the player instead of leaving the process to the TV. UB900 is also THX certified"

Yes there is compression but if its lossless its just that No Loss. Meaning that nothing was lost in the compression process so no upping the bitrate alone would do nothing. PCM soundtracks use a bitrate over twice as high as Master Audio or TrueHD tracks but are audibly 100% identical

So yes Dolby Atmos tracks will be the same on between these format. Still this format could be an opportunity to give titles released in Atmos theatrically but only given lesser soundtracks on the Blu-Ray an audio upgrade by including Atmos or DTS X in the Ultra HD version but if your Blu-Ray already has Atmos or DTS X there is no improvement that Ultra HD will do for it

I think it's an exact replica, otherwise it wouldn't be called lossless. The master spec will be completely uncompressed, but Blu-rays use lossless compression which reduces the size while still being identical to the original when decoded.

Yes. Posted for irony. Added Cnet article to clarify.

Good question. I first learned about this at Sony's press conference last night and it's on my short list of questions for my private Sony meeting this afternoon.

Stay tuned for the update...

even though it was quietly mentioned that Fox would be adding object based mixing soundtracks on their UHD titles, how hard is to actually state out right or indicate if it is Dolby Atmos (or DTS-X) ??
