(Though with the MediaTek UHD solution not going into mass production until the latter half of the year, even the UHD playback may come from a proprietary Panny chip.)

If you've simply gotta have it as soon as possible then have at it good sir, but I'd rather wait anyway than put my faith in a Samsung. [edit] I don't think the prices will rebound either. If the 4K TVs have been any indication then the prices will drop like a ****ing stone, and with mass-market players no doubt getting slimmed down for the second gen & beyond they will only get cheaper from there.
As far as the 700 goes, that was the one I wanted because they did bring the Uniphier again. I owned a BTD500 and LOVED it. Too bad the 700 never came to the US...

As far as the Sammy, Im a pro at selling CE equipment, it'll get me by until what I want comes out. And to be honest, if it works well, Ill sit on it until the Oppo 113 or whatever comes, which is what I really want. If I am not happy with the Samsung, Ill get the Panny when it comes out, if the Oppo is still a ways out.

They look like The Lord of the Rings box set black cases. Could it be that? Those were much thicker and better built than the standard bluray cases.

I found this link from November where LionsGate is remastering films for 4K release.

LionsGate Remastering Film Library in 4K

Quote:
Lionsgate is remastering its top 100 movies in 4K ultra high-definition for digital and broadcast release, according to Steve Beeks, co-COO and president of the motion picture group.
That doesn't specifically mention UHD BD. I do hope we get some discs from them this year, including Sicario.

Well there they are, do you know what the thickness of the cases are? it's hard to tell from the pictures, are they the thin US style cases or the thick(DVD Style) style UK cases?

Yeah looking at my LotR black case it seems WB is using the same elite case.

that's cool. some of my favorite movies are Lionsgate, and on a total nerd note, I really want to watch their opening logo sequence in 4K.

I'm not much of a betting man but I'm betting now that one of the first titles I get from them is Saw, I can see it being one of their first catalogue titles released. I want My Bloody Valentine either the original or 3D one but I don't know what the situation is with the original one because it was a Paramount film. I can't see either of those being released anywhere near launch though.

Why watch the movie now? The trailer spells out the plot, beat for beat. You already know what's going to happen and pretty much in the sequence it will happen.

So I'm gonna get in while the gettin's good.
Here is my fear and it's a fear I expressed 6 months ago:

I still haven't seen any company bigwig or tech guy standing on stage and putting a production standard UHD BD into a UHD BD player.

I have questions about all of the normal concerns you would have about a new disc format. What are the rejection rates? What is the result of long-term testing? Can we actually see the system working? I'm not talking about 4K encodes burned onto a BD25 for demonstration purposes...I want to know about production standard discs coming off of commercial production equipment.

As it stands, there are pre-orders for UHD BDs that we know very little about. And this is for a technology that I haven't seen publicly demonstrated. Oh, I know this stuff is on display...but I'd like to see a guy with a remote in his hand open up the tray of UHD BD player, put in a copy of THE MARTIAN and take us through the menus.

I've early adopted almost every technology...I still have a Sony Betamax. But I've never pre-ordered something that I haven't seen demonstrated.

Oh, I will definitely hold off until there is more information made available. As for rejection rates, multi-layered Blu-ray's like these have been in the pipe for a few years now for various applications. This is not brand new disc technology.

Wonder if they legally have to put something in the small print about resolution

there's no fine print on my 28 Days Later blu-ray about being shot in video.

So I would bet no.

Years ago, I started watching maybe a teaser and trailer 1 and 2 at most on youtube. Then leave it alone. By the time hits blu, Ive forgotten a lot about the trailer and it didnt ruin it for me.

But, if there are movies hitting March and July in UHD, I want the player now, not then. It also gives me a chance to see how good the Samsungs are, since they have been getting good reviews the last couple of generations. I used to buy players from Panny, Sony and LG every to try them out, and I stopped and just stuck with Sony the last 2 years. When Panny went to MediaTek in 2013 and dropped the Uniphier, those players would not pass certain video tests and were buggy. I was not happy about that because they were my go to player for a long time.
I don't like Sammy either (really just hate their phones). I don't own any Samsung products, but their UHD player looks nice...at $400 and able to downscale UHD to HD and play my current 3D BD's, I just might bite. I just bought a Sony S6500 (Been very happy with Sony) but I could return it towards the Sammy UHD. Plus I have a 10% off Best Buy coupon. My out of pocket will be ~$260 more. The only other possibility I see now is that Phillips, but I dunno about that company either...

I may be wrong but was their not a legal issue with a film on BD?

Yes. Seems to be several different images floating around. Based on the one in this link, which includes a USB port, that unit can't be more than 5" square. A BD is about 4 1/2" in diameter.

That's the 4K media player, not the UHD BD Disc Player.
