interest in regular blu-ray drives for PCs has been almost non-existent, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a long time before anybody bothers with a UHD blu-ray drive.

It's just not a feature that many people care about. Optical drives in general are going the way of the do-do.

Another reason why some people stick to DVDs - they can't play Blu-rays in their computer so why bother buying them?

Even computers with Blu-ray drives need paid software to play them - although my laptop came with a PowerDVD license included.

most people don't play physical media of any kind in computers. Your customer base for DVDs or blu-ray players in computers is pretty much limited to collect kids who live in dorms but don't have enough room for a tv.

Like I said, it's not an inherent problem with blu-ray in computers, it's all physical media.

Fox's first titles are supposedly all on BD-66's. BD-100 stamping facilities are fewer in number and the costs are higher. Sony seems to have a lock on those discs for now.

It's just like the issues surrounding BD-50's when Blu-ray first debuted. It took a little bit for those to become the norm.

There seems to be some question about the reliability of 18Gbps cables. Kaleidescape is testing them.

Best to look for the ones that have been tested and have the premium certification label, since my monoprice redmere were acting up.

Not one issue with the BJC FE series.

Will the Sony discs be 100gb then?

That was more of a licensing fee issue. Microsoft saved something like $5 per copy of Windows by not including it. They also noted most users used something other than Windows Media Player for DVD & BD playback.

They still support MPEG2, MPEG 4 and Dolby Digital Plus codec native support within Windows.

Hard to say. They may start with the most minimal production cost they can (BD-66) or they may start big. Sony is a fairly schizophrenic company plus they were definitely making no overt mention of UHD Blu-ray at CES. Just proprietary streaming and downloads from their own Sony service compatible with Sony products and no other brand.

Sony were indicating to the BDA back in 2014 that they were developing their own 100GB production line which would not be made commercially available to other replicators, so it wouldn't be a surprise if their discs were TL. Or as you say Freaky, they may go with DL anyway to save a few $$$ on the earliest launch titles.

But there's no way Lawrence is fitting onto a 66GB without compromising dat bitrate, and River Kwai and Navarone are both well over 2½ hours too for that matter, so when they appear on UHD disc (which apparently may be sooner rather than later) they'll hafta be TL.

IIRC, Lawrence from SEN was a UHD 65GB download (MP4), the major difference, the download was H.264 (eyeIO) and the UHD disc should be H.265.

So they go with 100GB or even two disc. Certainly want the best possible quality on this title.

Some people were saying Lawrence was way bigger than that, but then that might just be the size of the regular AVC re-encode that was done when they wuz ripped.

In any case, I appreciate that HEVC should still be more efficient than the eyeIO tweaked AVC that Sony were using (which itself delivered some impressive bitrate savings), but these discs will be 10-bit HDR as opposed to 8-bit SDR so I'd still feel very uncomfortable about them putting Lawrence onto a single 66GB UHD platter, especially when other language options are factored in (the original Sony downloads only have English PCM AFAIK).

Hell, even if 100GB TL isn't available then they could do what the JPN Superbit Mi4K Blu did and split the movie over two discs, so 2x 66GB in this case. First part of the movie on disc 1, second part of the movie plus legacy HD extras on disc 2.

I think those download sizes on that list (don't remember which thread, if not this one) were for all versions of the movie perhaps? I read that Vidity gives you a download pack which would include UHD, HD and SD versions. But not sure about that. It would make sense though because Lawrence would not be over 100GB on another site and only 65-70 GB (which does cheat down the equivalent bit rate just a tad from the BD) on Sony's own site.

No, I still think it's because the leaked Sony downloads were re-encoded. And by re-encoded I mean "by whatever nefarious types ripped them in the first place" so some of their encodes weren't necessarily the last word in optimisation. Some were CBR and not VBR, for example.
