I know of a charming, beautiful lady in our neighborhood who will inevitably vomit while driving in heavy traffic (it doesn’t matter if she is the driver or not) within 10–30min. of the "being exposed". Believe me, my wife still has a residual stain in her car carpeting to prove it.

It has affected this lady’s life so much, that it caused her to move within a couple miles of her place of employment and now all she deals with is the local traffic, which is very light, and doesn’t cause her any nausea leading to a vomiting episode, although she does tell me then when she receives her property tax bill in the mail every year, she feels like a good barf would be in order.

I don’t know what the Parallax Scoring Graph (Depth Script) looks like for Nightmare Before Christmas so I can’t help you there but, I would say that odds are AVATAR shouldn’t bother you if you sit far enough away from the screen. Initially, you’re going to probably have some filmmakers and stereographers who will desire to maximize the 3D effect with ‘aggressive’ 3D techniques, most likely in the horror genre but, as more experience is gained I think that everyone in the industry will come around to the notion of not risking the prolonged viability of the 3D format and cater more toward a subtle effect like Jim Cameron did. This notion will be expressed at the upcoming Summit in a few weeks…….
http://www.smpte.org/events/smpte_nab/2010DCS/

Ultimately, in the long run, it would be self-destructive for filmmakers, content providers and consumer electronics companies to market stuff knowingly, which can produce a deleterious effect to a significant portion of the ‘normal’ population such as a plethora of scenes which cut rapidly and repetitively in and out of the screen.

They’re not going to cut their own throats.
You know, occasionally my wife reads what I write on Blu-ray.com and so when I got home late last night, the first thing that she confronts me with when I open the door is that she claims in the post above, I make it sound like she is “the vomit queen” rather than our neighbor and what will people think if I introduce her someday to someone who is an avid reader of Blu-ray.com?
Her words….."They’ll probably stand 15ft. away from me because you’ve pre-conditioned them that I’ll splatter them with projectile vomiting if we previously had to drive in heavy traffic before arriving".

After re-reading the past post above, I don’t think so but, nevertheless I told her to read further down on the last page as I think I make the differentiation clear as to who actually suffers from some sort of vestibular disorder.

Anyway, moving on.
Love you Honey.

The 3D Star Wars was specifically produced for them, it shouldn't be taken as "a sign". Lucas hasn't actually done a lot with it yet. I've only heard recently that he's actually managed to get anything he's happy with

I'm not busting on it, Das Boot is an amazing film, but it would not, under the best of circumstances be a good 3D flick
Well, if you’re implying that it would not be a very good technical candidate for a 2D to 3D convert, I don’t know for sure, as some 3D testing would have to be done first. If this project were ever to come to fruition (with the Director’s approval, of course) I’m not really concerned about that aspect of it, as I know that some executives from other majors are considering other film candidates for 2D -> 3D conversions which I would say aren’t exactly GIANTS in terms of depth of field with the original principal photography.

Plus, Coraline proved quite well that a shallow DOF in 3D can look superb, esp. since over 30% of that movie has some sort of shallow focus. I would be more concerned with the actual expense of the whole project in making it look good for 3D. These conversions aren’t actually like stamping out toasters on an assembly line.

When I posted that on the last page, I was thinking more in terms of enhancing the claustrophobic nature of Das Boot, ala, like with this upcoming Stereoscopic 3D motion picture produced by James Cameron……..

Everybody wants to convert old movies; meanwhile, the highest grossing movie of the year gets dumped on its ass because there aren't enough screens.

I read the argument against a Das Boot conversion as at least as much an aesthetic opinion as a technical one and, if I read it correctly, that's a position I agree with. I'll try to remain open-minded and we'll see what comes down the pike, but for the time being, as much of a fan of current 3D systems as I am, I tend to view this retroactive conversion, on the whole, as somewhat akin to colorisation. 3D was available if Wolfgang Petersen had been interested in it at the time.

Yes, I don't think it's a good technical candidate, but I also don't think the photography would be enhanced much at all. It's just not the right style for it. When you watch it again I think you'll see what I mean. I just wish I'd picked up the superbit while I had the chance

I agree and I dare say, I think it might even be 'un-enhanced' by the process. A number of my favorite shots in the film (and the film is in my top 20) feature a single foreground character in close-up, with a number of others huddled behind/around him. To my conscious experience, these shots benefit from the viewer not quite being able to tell exactly how much space is between the characters.

Jeff, as soon as you can give me your "scout's honor" that the BD is looking on-track for within a year or so, I'll send you my Superbit. I've asked you when the BD is coming so many times, it's the least I can do.

Well, if you can get your hands on the Blu a full year before it's commercially available, nothing that I can imagine.

Jesus, we're getting even closer to real-time spotting of the Penton... We know where he's eating lunch!

And, yeah, it was fully understandable that your wife had a pukey friend, but that she could hold her own bile.

Not looking for a "sign", looking to hear from somebody that's seen the demo.

Penton? Anybody?

Got a source for Lucas' comments/remarks on the repurposing?

Meanwhile, EG toured HDI: http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/12/h...e-new-face-of/

Penton,

Two things...first, did you see highlights of the Sharks vs. Predators game last night? My Sharks were down 4-2 entering the third (and playing like a steaming pile, I might add) and came back to win the gam 8-5!!!! You HAVE to see the second goal Pavelski scored in the period...one of the best this year. Also, he didn't have a bad third period with 4 points---2 goals and two assists. Not bad for the US Olympian. (http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console for highlights)

Second, I was in the desert on Wednesday and Thursday and got to play PGA West Stadium (outstanding coarse). I didn't see any rattlesnakes bit I did happen to sink a couple of birdie putts on my way to an 81

You're married to Dick Cook?

I'm with your wife's friend, chalk on another reason I don't live in LA The sooner we have drive by wire in every car and eliminate selfdrive the sooner I might consider enduring your horrible non-weather Seriously that traffic is a nightmare. The last time I flew into LA was the first time I ever arrived in the daytime, and it was a real interesting study in civil engineering.....or the lack or it that would allow for actual public transit systems Too spread out!

Jeff,

I'm in Southern California at least twice per month on business and it doesn't matter what time of day it is there's always traffic. One thing you want to avoid is being in LA when it's raining. I was there in January during a rainstorm and it took me 45 minutes to drive from Santa Monica to LAX!!! (That's less than 10 freaking miles!)

No, I mean I came in on the plane and got a birdseye view in the daytime

I know there's always traffic. I've spent a lot of time in the area myself
