When are you due to cover “The Boss” at TIFF?
well, it doesn't start for another week. But as soon as I get word, I'll let you know.

You do have my site via PM still, right?

And yeah, it's a war "doc" that played Cannes as a drama, and went on to win the critic's prize. I'm not the first one to laud it by any means, but ARMADILLO's a pretty damn spectacular work, and deserving of a hell of a BD.

Meanwhile, I'm extremely pleased that the re-release of Anchorman includes the film made out of the deleted subplot ("Wake Up Ron Burgundy"). For fans of the first film that never picked up the Best Buy special DVD, this is a MUST buy.

I know you sent it to me but I readily can’t find it since I normally delete a lot of my incoming PMs after I’ve read them. I really think you should post it here for all to see, at least at the time you report on Bruce Springsteen’s appearance/interview, as that’s directly related to the upcoming Blu-ray. You have to understand, there is a search inertia level which must be overcome for many people (including me) so, it’s best to do us all a favor in terms of saving us some time. If you remain reluctant for one reason or another, heck, just copy and paste your spiel directly onto this thread.

In regards to the ‘combat thing’, last year, one of the most powerful motion pictures (from a cinematographic standpoint) just happened to be the war movie Lebanon….
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1483831/

The D.P., Giora Bejach won top honors (the Golden Frog) for this motion picture at the 2009 Plus Camerimage (http://www.pluscamerimage.pl), which is the festival recognizing cinematographers in Europe. I don’t remember, but you may have reviewed it for last year’s TIFF. The camera work is so superb, it should be required viewing at most film schools. I notice we also have a fine Blu-ray review up here…https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Leban.../12267/#Review

Will you be able to review CoFD?...... http://tiff.net/filmsandschedules/ti...forgottendream

I think that Roger Ebert, who is no great supporter of 3D, is even interested in seeing how ‘Cave’ turned out. On a lighter note, how about reviewing for us the 2D film, Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Talll Dark Stranger? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182350/

Or, if you care to stick with the documentary fare, then share your movie critique of Inside Job, as I’m sure that will stir up some strong emotions amongst a lot of adult folks whose life has been dramatically changed in the past couple of years - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1645089/

COFD is my most looked forward to film (I've said it here before, but there's lots going on)

I'm not reluctant for no reason, just trying to abide by the BD.com rules. If anybody on the admin side has any problem with the links, please feel free to modify them as you wish, I'm not looking to step on any toes.

Anyhoo, here's all the films tagged TIFF2010 (http://filmfest.ca/category/film-reviews/tiff2010/)

And the reviews so far (all pre-screenings, the actual fest starts on the 9th) are:

Armadillo (http://filmfest.ca/2010/09/02/armadillo/)

Daydream Nation (http://filmfest.ca/2010/09/03/daydream-nation/)

Last Night (http://filmfest.ca/2010/09/01/last-night/)

You and the other mods seem to be on good terms now, just don’t bug me again about wire removal, other than to say something complementary like…”Penton, great minds think alike!” when eventually ‘20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’ (1954) makes an appearance on Blu-ray, as the mouse house crew also plan to have those pesky wires digitally erased from that giant squid …….during the current on-going restoration.

And speaking of wires, cables and such….I figure probably few or none of you guys and gals will ever make it into the business as a cinematographer, digital colorist, Director, Producer, etc. but given your fondness for motion pictures, there’s much more of a chance that someday you might get the opportunity to work as an extra at minimum wage.

So, if you’re at all spiritually inclined, please say a prayer for Gabriella……http://www.popeater.com/2010/09/03/t...rgoes-surgery/ as it will only take about 30 sec. of your time.

One good thing about the situation is that Loyola Univ. Med. Ctr. is ranked in the top 50 of the best hospitals in the U.S. for Neurology and Neurosurgery, so I’m confident she’s receiving some of the best available medical care.

That is a very sad freak accident that hopefully doesn't claim her life, I will honor her today with a moment of silence.

Heh, I'm not going to reshash that again, other than to point out my concern wasn't about whether wire removal was a good or bad thing, but about who gets to make the call. ie., the same "slippery slope" stuff that crept in during discussions of De-graining, colour correction, etc., etc.

But I digress, and certainly get your point

Never seen 20,000, weirdly. I guess now I'll see it free of "pesky wires".

ah, excellent: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Forbi...ay/752/#Review

nice to see it come out on blu! Now, GO BUY IT!

I see another review up of THX, I actually thought it had been delayed. Excellent to see that it's kept all the stuff from the 2 disc.

(ps. I haven't yet seen anywhere mentioned, is the FP disc the exact same as the HD-DVD?)

I actually missed that there's a UK BD:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Leban.../12267/#Review

It played TIFF last year, I missed it (you'll hear that a LOT as things go by...sigh).

Here's an amusing article about the "mishegas" during that time (http://www.thestar.com/entertainment...article/696341)

funny, no protests this year as the C2C program is Istanbul.

Anyhoo, the disc looks great, will certainly pick it up when released here.

Speaking of war movies, PATTON is screening in 70mm this Monday (Labor Day) at the Walter Reade Theater in New York City. Thanks to Oliver Klohs for informing me of this as I had no idea. Hopefully other BD.com members who love film and live in the area will be able to attend*:

http://www.filmlinc.com/wrt/onsale/fox.html

Vincent

* CLEOPATRA is also screening earlier that same day, also in 70mm.

I can’t find a correspondingly compatible thread for 3D TV sales in Blacksburg, VA. C’mon Hokie fans, if you’re not making the drive around the beltway to the game, then purchase one of those 3D sets and tell us what you think of the football broadcast.

Well, on that note, in order to give the little fella (16mm. source) a tip of the hat, Wanda (1970) was Barbara Loden’s only film as director and will be shown at MOMA on Oct. 27. This is a new restoration which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last week but, you can catch it in Manhattan next month-
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/29/mo...g4qWp+Hit0GJ3w

The back story on the restoration is that the UCLA film preservationist just happened upon the original A/B rolls the day before they were due to be destroyed and tossed, at an outside lab. The restoration maintains the grain, which should bring a broad smile to the face of grain aficionados.

Not apparently, there is a new restoration of "From Here to Eternity". A 4k scan of the fine grain master positive (the only available original element) was done along with a new digital restoration of the original soundtrack.

Sorry, I normally don’t answer “when on Blu-ray” questions.

Mr. Klohs is back from the IFA 3D projection still remains a bit of a problematic subject though.
I visited a few manufacturers anyway with the following results:

Mitsubishi: New projector was on display (with SXRD technology by the way) but 3D demonstrations were only scheduled to begin the day after I was there (Friday). The 2D demonstration was OK though even though two of the demos seemed clipped. The presenter made a funny spelling error and talked about LSD projectors - I would have to think about getting one of those

Sony: I saw an extremely short 3D demo that lasted about 2 minutes. It was without obvious flaws with regard to ghosting or other issues but the picture was extremely dim on a screen that I would guess was about 2m wide.

Epson: No 3D from Epson, but a very bright 2D picture on a very big screen (3.5m wide). Overall I was impressed with their first reflective LCD units R2000 and R4000 - especially the R2000 will be a contender.

JVC: The new D-ILA units weren't on display

LG: The dual engine projector had a bright picture, horrible demonstration material and lots of ghosting

Samsung: an OK demonstration with a bit more brightness than Sony but considerably less than LG - still not enough even for a 2m screen, at least imo.

I also had a look at some of the flat panels and these looked better as they had the necessary brightness to also give a punchy picture with 3D material.
From what I have seen I would not really like 3D for movies, maybe for some sports and definitely for gaming - so gamers will have something that really works nicely to draw them into the game, that really seemed to be a good application for 3D.

The most impressive picture of the show imo was a 4k 160" plasma fed with 4k demonstration material - a good old high resolution 2D picture that looked very 3D just by virtue of its superior resolution, so what happened to the idea of a 4k consumer projector from Sony ?

As it looks now 4k in consumer media and projectors won't be coming any time soon now that we have 3D and the next push may be for higher refresh rates instead of higher resolution

I am also not THAT interested in 3D and given the fact that the presentations were extremely different from each other (screen size, demo material, lighting conditions) my post would not be sufficient to start a dedicated thread.

Nothing to be sorry about, I appreciate the post you made, in the end I think you need to see a projector in the proper location/set-up with your own eyes. What you posted here was what I was looking for, some idea of what is out there
