Hey Penton, is ASM finished filming yet? It's been a LONG time. By the way, with the 3D, are you guys going to make the scenes maybe more bright than they usually are because of how the glasses make scenes darker? I read somewhere that James Cameron sent out different prints of Avatar with different brightness levels because of this.

FABULOUS to hear, from this review at least, that that fine release has been not only ported to Blu, but surpassed. Excellent news, now we can only pray that other stalwarts such as LEBOWSKI can find their way in versions that better the other HD version they're supplanting.
Looks like your prays have been answered.

Cinephile activists should be shouting – “Producers take note, if not for ourselves, do it (4K DI’s) for the sake of our cinephile children!”
Just curious Penton, of the films currently in production, what percentage of them are using 4K DI? And is the use of 4k DI trending upward?

Hope others jump on that soap box yours.

A classic.

Already have this one on order.

It's good to see the studios starting to release the older catalog pieces, and at this quality level. Shows the level of respect they have for their history. Especially considering that the of return, which is known to be low, and expense surrounding these titles.

It will be color corrected at the brightness level according to the active supervision of the Director of Photography. Now, how accurately (from the 2K 3D DCP) it is ultimately projected at your particular local cinema, I can not predict for you, as it seems there is more of a variance with the quality (esp. brightness) of 3D theatrical presentations among different Cineplexes than there is for 2D content/presentations. I wouldn't worry about it though for the eventual Blu-ray rendition, esp. if you own an 3D LCD display.

Be forewarned, 3D or not, there are some naturally/intended dark scenes in ASM, if you don't like that sort of thing. A teaser reel has already been color corrected at Sony Colorworks and I can not tell you if it will be previewed at the upcoming Comic–Con in San Diego so, please don't ask.

I’ m not sure of the exact percentage at this time as I really don’t follow that closely, since just for the L.A. area, there are several major post houses but in general , the vast majority of motion pictures still undergo 2K DIs.

The good thing is, 4k DI post production is definitely trending upward which is especially gratifying since as of only a couple years or so ago, I would say 90% (or more, like 95%) of all feature films underwent 2k post production workflow.

Penton, I hope I'm not sidetracking or anything, but do you know why the Digital Bits topic is locked? It's not like it was full (there would have been a new one, I would think?) and there wasn't any argument I was aware of.

If the lens misuse allegations are true I see the fault falling on the theater company's projectionist "mismanagement".
Next to not checking the focus.

I have also noticed this. When the Sony projectors were initially installed in one of the local theaters, they looked fine. But more recently, I thought they started using different bulbs or something, when I watched The Fighter it was so dim I wanted to walk out and get my money back.

agree, I don't see it as a Sony nor 3D issue. This is why I don't like going to the movies and built my own HT, they are just not run professionaly and no one cares what the experience is like.

On the flip side, I don't get this.

the Sony 4K projectors show

for 3D and then

this image splits the image into two and focuses one on top of the other.

if they show a 4K image, then it would be messed up. Does the server show twice the same 2k image? or does it only put the image top centre or bottom centre?

According to the article Sony has not made the lenses easy to swap, unlike other solutions from other companies.

What was the ‘first’?

If this can be confirmed to be other than an anomalous situation(s), then perhaps an in-service or How To Do video is in order.
There will always be challenges presented to projectionists and their supervisors, unless I guess everything becomes 100% automated with a flick of a switch.

For example, a little talked about or recognized theatrical 3D exhibition problem is that in post production, the floating stereo window is set to avoid edge violations and it is not uncommon for some theaters to project the image incorrectly. The less quality conscious facilities crop or over-project into the fabric masking and remove the window the stereographers have so painstaking produced for theatrical audiences.
