We all have a friend or two that never returns stuff. There are only two people I let borrow when I had dvds. My friend Adam who watches them promptly and cares folr them like a child. He is like me. Gives respect nd my friend Matt is the same way.
My grilfriend (who is now an ex) use to borrow witth no problem. I almost banned my sister because she would just take without asking. At the time I had 500 movies, but I knew when one was missing. it was liek a sixth sense. I told her if she want to borrow, she has to ask. She is family so i gave her three strikes. Strike one was taking without asking, two was returning the dvd case but not the dvd!, and she does not have blu so she has not made strike three. |

Just ask, "what would Jesus do." The next time your friend asks to borrow your blu, just ask yourself, "If Jesus was in this situation, what method of saying 'NO' would he use." Now, your friend will understand that you did the right thing and will be okay with it. |

Its good to know that I'm not the only one who feels the same way many of you feel about "loaning" out my movies. I honestly thought I was unique.
Before BD, I had a good sized SD-DVD collection (around 350). I've loaned some out only to have them disappear or come back scratched all to hell. One a**hole, (who I thought was a friend) borrowed my copies of Gladiator, The Mummy, and Snatch, finished up his semester with no intentions of returning to that school and then moved home with his parents in another state without telling me. I guess when he packed up his apartment he put my discs in a box and took them with him. No more!! I know of only one friend that I would trust enough to take care of my discs and he lives nowhere near me, so obviously he never asks to borrow. Yes, I have a large movie collection, but I'm not f***ing Blockbuster. If you want to watch one of my movies, you have to watch it at my house. I don't even feel bad about it anymore. |

I loath loaning out Blu's. I only did it once. I pretty much talked this family I know into going Blu and they didn't have very many movies in the beginning. So I let them borrow I, Robot. They in return let me borrow Hellboy.
I used to hate loaning out Dvd's as well. But now that I have Blu I seem to lend out my DvD's a lot . I usually give people I normally trust one try. If they borrow one and then bring it back in a timely manner unharmed, I will continue letting them borrow them till they show me I can't trust them. In return I have been getting some from the same people that I let borrow them. Sometimes it's fun letting people borrow movies cause I love to share the film experience with others. It's great to sit down and talk about movies with others and have them show you films that move them in some form. |

I don't lend stuff out. Ever. Not even to family, not after an incident with the Hellboy Dir's Cut 3 disc DVD set. I hadn't even watched it, yet my mother wanted to borrow it. It came back, looking like someone had wiped their ass with it. Now, it's just tough sh*t if they ask.
In regard to borrowing stuff from my family, it's usually stuff that I bought in the first place, so dosen't count. |

Coolest perk of being an early adopter and no one else having caught on: not having to lend it. One time I lent my DVD copy of Amelie to a friend who is seemingly one of those careful, anal types. It came back unplayable, a deep gash running across the disc. Be careful with your stuff!

my worst dvd lending experience was when i lent out supernatural season 1 and 2 to my bro. i asked for it back like 2 months. finally i went to his place and discovered one of the discs from season 1 was missing. HOW DO YOU LOSE A DISC?!?!?!?! HOW?!?!?! IS THAT POSSIBLE?? i can't imagine how this **** is possible. i search every blockbuster and rogers because they sell tv shows disc-by-disc. i feel like i'm searching for some 1st edition copy of a book at used book stores tho lol

It depends on who it is that I am lending to.
I have a buddy that I work with who also has a PS3 and Blu-Rays movies, and he let's me borrow his movies and I let him borrow mine (though, the occurrences of this are few and far between). He's a trust worthy guy. He knows that I am anal about my collection (and I think he is about his to some extent, too). He is careful with his things like I am with mine. And if something were to accidentally happen to my disc while in his possession, I'm sure he'd offer to replace it. My mom and step-dad also just got an HDTV and PS3 recently, and I've been lending them some of my movies as well. But they are also careful with them, and again, if something were to happen to the disc while in their possession, they'd replace it. But there are certain people whom I wouldn't even consider lending movies to. If I don't feel that I can trust them, then I won't lend out to them. Quote:

I hate loaning out blu-rays or dvds too. My buddy who lives downstairs from me just bought a blu-ray player and asked me if he could use some blu-rays. Well me being nice the nice guy that I am let him use Wall-E, The Dark Knight, and Wanted on Tuesday and he said he'll bring them up the following day. Well it took him almost 3 days to bring them up but he only brought up the Dark Knight and Wall-E. He told me that he couldn't find Wanted I was like wtf

I hate lending things out. I also hate when people offer to let me borrow something...and then bring it in unexpectedly for you. I usually watch it asap and get rid of it. I just don't like having it at my house.

This is our hobby/collection and we value it. To most people, movies are just something they watch once in a while and they naturally assume we are the same way. It is not rude to preface a borrowed movie with a short explanation of how anal you are about your collection and how important it is to you that the movie is brought back on time and in perfect shape. People have always been pretty understanding when I explain myself. |

After many bad experiences lending out my DVDs I would never lend out a blu. No matter who asks.
To this day I have never received a disc back in the same condition it was given. To those saying it's greedy to say no: Bull. I payed for them with my money. I'm not obligated to loan them to whoever asks. That's what Blockbuster and Netflix are for. Last edited by Sasso; 12-20-2008 at 03:42 AM. |
