Never, ever lend out your blus except to people you absolutely trust. I learned that the hard way. I lent out Memento to someone a week after i got it and haven't gotten it back yet. That was 6 months ago. It's really frustrating not having a full collection shelved. I actually cannot bring myself to look at it right now. So far I've lent out: Memento, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Transformers, Iron Man, Independence Day, Bonnie and Clyde, Juno, The Godfather Collection, the third season of Lost, Mad Men, Batman Begins and an imported copy of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. A lot of people have stopped picking up their phones. I'm pretty sure they've lost or damaged the disc and don't wanna own up to it. Yeah, never lend sht out to dicks.

I have an idea...
How about taking a deposit, say, $25.00 for each Blu-Ray borrowed; with the agreement that if it comes back to you in a different condition than what it went out - they keep the disc and you keep the cash (to buy a new copy). You can bet that people would either be extra careful with your property OR (even better) not borrow your stuff, as they know how careless they (or their kids) are. |

Luckily, I'm one of the only one of my friends with a Blu-ray player, so that's a non-issue... for now.
I usually only lend my DVDs/CDs out to three people: my mom, sister and a friend of mine. But they keep good care of my DVDs/CDs so I don't mind too much. The only thing that bothers me is that I don't see my friend all that often lately so I know he'll have it for a couple of months. I've conveniently "forgotten" to bring the disc that he wants to borrow if it is something that I know I'll want to play in the near future. |

Fortunately, I'm the only blu-ray adopter (so far) among my friends so the issue hasn't come up yet, but I was also confronted to the same issue back in the days when I was an early DVD adopter.
However, usually my closest friends would just swing by my house and drop off DVD's they bought and leave them at my place so I can watch them, without me asking it. For those kind of friends with whom I have a trusting relationship, I didn't mind to lend out my DVDs. Now, if it bothers you, you can also go with the excuse: "Ah, sorry, I would lend it to you but I've already planned to watch it with another friend". If they're a bit smart, they'll catch the hidden message. |

Well my neighbor brought my copies of Dark Knight and Wall-E back to me in good shape, and only kept them for 3 days. Just some finger prints on one of the discs that were easily wiped off. I might lend to him again if he continues to bring them back in good shape.

Something happen in my house yesterday that re-enforce why I have no wish to let anyone borrow my BD or DVD.
Someone came over yesterday and was looking at my wall of DVD, pulling each one out looking at them (cause it's so hard to look with the eyes, they have to look with their hands) At one point I was asked something by someone else and had to turn away from him. He went and grab my Complete Alias box set. I am not sure if you have seen this set but it's in the form of the Milo Rambaldi box that they chase in the series. It's just a top that pull out and the side just peal away revealing the booklets inside with each season. Well you can guess what happen, top remain in his hands the rest went flying straight over the floor. I got DVD all over the floor, everything mix, a real mess. As you can imagine I was far from being happy. ![]() This happen inside my house, with me there being distracted for 1 second. Then you want to ask to borrow my BD or DVD. No way. That experience yesterday just make's me even more serious about not letting my collection out of my house. |

The OP's thread question is "Can I borrow your copy of Ironman?"
Answer: Sure you can, but may you? Absolutely not. I'm not Blockbuster. If you want to watch one of my BDs you can watch it at my house. After scratches and outright theft of my DVDs, it won't happen with my Blu-ray collection (and I eventually stopped letting it happen with my DVDs, too). |

anyone have any new horror stories? lawl
i have lent out a few recently, and when I lend them out i feel like a little bit of a nit because i package them in those large hard plastic, anti-theft packages. i received a bunch when i placed an order with sig electronics. it gets a few looks but i havne't received a damaged BD or BD case while using this method =D |

I think I said it here before (two months ago when the thread was raging) but I'd lend out one of my PS3s, my Aquos, a receiver, my M1 speakers, an AVR, an all necessary cables if a "FRIEND" asked me to do so....... if it's a good enough friend, and something happened to my things.... as long as it's not malicious, it's no big deal. Things can be replaced..... I'd hate to lose a friend because I didn't trust them enough to loan out some "stuff".

No. No. No. I do not loan out ANY dvd's or blu-rays. The ONLY exception is if one of my grandkids wants to "Borrow" Fox and the Hound, or Cars, or whatever, then that is fine. I usually call them in a few days and say, "Go ahead and keep it" Then it becomes a gift rather than a loaner and no one gets their feelings hurt. If its for my grandchildren, fine, they can have it, and I will replace it. But that is the ONLY exception.

agreed. i couldn't have said it any better. Quote:
it's not necessarily about losing your friend. it's about how you treat your friends. the fact that you care more about your blu-rays than your friends says a lot about you as a friend. how do you think they feel in that instance? or when you say no to them borrowing a movie? they will probably think you're being a bit mean and rather selfish. and if you were to ask them for a favor they'll probably remember how you were to them. it's just a movie. if they lose it buy another. don't go into the costly aspect of replacing it and all. friendship should mean more than the cost of a lousy movie. |
