Do you loan your Blu-rays out to friends?

I did have to specify to one of them, that when I lend you a film, don't lend it to another friend (even if I know said friend). I was chasing my criterion copy on Mike Leigh's Naked amongst a circle of friends for about 8 months due to this problem. It was seriously annoying.

Years ago, I lent a friend the criterion Antoine Doinel Box. She it without telling me that she had lost The 400 Blows. When I found out, I asked her to replace it (as in, sorry, but you have to buy me the box again, it's your fault). She offered to buy me the individual french release. We argued for about 3 months before she relented and bough me the box. She gave me the new box, I gave her the old one with the missing disc and then she bought herself the french edition of The 400 Blows. We didn't speak for a few months after that. We're good friends, but she's never asked to borrow a film again

Anecdote:

About 15 years ago, whilst in France, a friend of mine who had a fanzine managed to get an interview with Lloyd Kaufman whilst he was in Paris. They had a good laugh, and at the end of the interview, Lloyd asked my friend if he could find the Troma team a hotel near to La Croisette for the Cannes Film festival. Troma had been banned from every hotel on La Croisette due to their idiocy over the years. Of course Lloyd and his wife stayed in a 4 star...anyway, my friend found them a hotel, and in return we (my 2 French friends and I) were invited for the duration of the festival, and we could stay with the team in said hotel. First night out, just before the beginning of the festival we're all drinking in a bar on La Croisette, and a member of the Troma team from New Jersey asks me "what's wrong with these French?".
"What do you mean ?" I replied
He told me that he and his friends wanted to drink and fight, and found it strange that the French just wanted to drink.

There are only a few that I lend my Blu/DVD to. My parents, sister, friend and two work colleagues, all of which have been very reliable.

However, to avoid potential problems I always:
- Lend them disc only
- Lend DVD before Blu

Main reasons is I don't want my Steelbooks, digibooks and slips scratched/dented due to accident. This is especially true for those that take the bus as a steelbook could easily become scratched/dented while in a backpack.

Depending on the person, if the release is a combo pack, I will more often than not lend the DVD instead. This gives me the opportunity to re-watch the film without needing to wait for the disc to be returned.

I would suggest to those that cherish the condition of the packaging to go ahead and buy a few blank Blu-Ray/DVD cases, so you can lend them the disc only.

No, they never come back or if they do they are usually scratched etc. But they are welcome to watch it with me.

No, but I think it's only because they are scared to ask. Only because most of my friends have witnessed how I treat them and display them. To me they are not just "movies". So they respect the fact I don't lend my blus out but they all know they're more than welcome to grab a beer and watch anytime.

I only really lend to family members. My flatmate lives with me so he can watch it anytime, but I never allow him to lend them to his friends. Basically, if it's a male friend, I don't borrow them out, if it's a female friend who happens to be attractive, I might.

I once lent a copy of Ghost World on DVD to a friend. She returned it to me, with a DVD-R labeled "Ghost World" in sharpie in the DVD case. Apparently she had ripped that copy for herself, but misplaced the original disc. It still works perfectly fine, and I never did bother to replace it, but...

I don't loan any of my discs to anyone except close family members. I learned back in the days of the original Nintendo that loaning out games/CDs/movies and the like is not smart.

I used too, but like so many others have said, not anymore. Way too may bad experiences. Most people just don't care and that includes your best of friends and family.

I've had bad experiences with my SD before she was married with DVDs she borrowed and didn't return for 5 months,getting them back scratched,covered with greasy fingerprints. Borrowed and never returned books,etc.

My main reason not to lend besides worrying about getting them back in pristine condition,is that I don't want to become a free rental place. Borrow this,borrow that. Then having to ask for it back it's always a pain. Plus they never come over. I don't want people to "visit" just because they want to borrow my movies

People not respecting your choice and giving you grief about something you are not even obligated to do are terrible.

The fact that they assume it will be ok says enough

I would and I do but as of right now its kind of hard to build a collection when there are movies missing. I wouldn't mind if I had every shelf filled but as of right now I am still trying to fill the big void in my collection.
