Agreed. I was at a friend's house this weekend who had every disc of "The Office: Season Four" face down/artwork up on her coffee table. And in her little cabinet with the rest of her DVDs were just random discs thrown about. Now I'm not saying everyone has to be as obsessed as us collectors are but why would you treat anything like that? You spend the money on these titles and then immediately go home and destroy them? Some people are just complete morons (yes, my fiend included).

If you loan a BD to a friend and he/she returns it NOT in the same condition as it was borrowed there is a problem. You'll be pissed and they will say it was not their fault. Avoid the potential problem and Avoid loaning! (imo)

Same with me, they know not to even ask. (unless they want to borrow a dvd...typically I'll give them my dvd free if I have it on blu or intend to upgrade).
I mean, they're welcome just about any time to come over and watch one, if they want. That I don't mind. |

I was used to be very anal about my DVDs - I'd often lend them to people either in a bag or in a spare case - but since I started collecting Blu-rays, my DVD collection has lost much of its novelty and I tend to lend them to people with little bother. Still, there are some DVDs in my collection, in particular special editions with slipcovers and such, that I regret lending to people. My Taxi Driver 2-disc and Last House on the Left 3-disc sets look rather battered, and my Garden State and The Shining DVDs came back scratched and unwatchable.
I won't be lending my Blu-rays out, though. Having said that, if somebody asked, my reflex response would mostly likely be, "Sure you can borrow it!" Then I'd feel like an idiot. |

Seeing how this thread is 26 pages long forgive if I'm stating something that has already been said!
On the subject of loaning out movies you are pretty much stuck in the Catch 22 of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" - If you want to protect your movies and refuse to loan them out you risk alienating your friends, however if you do loan them out and when said friend returns it in less than perfect condition and you complain about how they treated your property you once again risk alienating your friends. |

I used to loan them out but I've been burned too many times. Coffee stains, fingerprints, scratches, broken cases and even outright theft persuaded me otherwise. Besides, if the person really wants to see the movie, they can rent or buy it themselves, especially in the age of Netflix. I have a lot of titles on DVD and Blu and it always annoys me when people just assume that they can borrow them, especially when they have the nerve to mock me for buying so many. Seriously, my girlfriend's obnoxious sister and even more obnoxious brother-in-law came to visit once and were casing my collection. The first thing the sister said was, "Wow, this is why we don't buy that many movies. They just clutter up your house." Then within 10 seconds after that she said, "Ooh, we'll have to borrow this one." What a hypocrite! Needless to say, no movies left my house.

I loaned out "The Office" Season 1 to my friend and his stupid roommate appropriated it and managed to spill a cup of coffee all over the case (so the paper insert was completely stained). He said he'd replace it but it really wasn't his fault so I told him he didn't have to. I didn't know the roommate well enough to ask her. So sometimes you still get screwed even if you have good friends!
