The worst is saying no to a family member. My aunt asked to borrow Big bang theory, and said she would return it in a week. A month later i go to her house for dinner and find ALL the discs laying around the TV area with scratches, and she misplaced the case. After that day there is a lock on my bedroom door.

I don't lend mine out, being burnt by people not taking care of them is one reason why, but piracy also has a lot to do with it. So many ask to borrow from me so they can copy them. I'm not paying for movies just to let someone own it for free at my expense. About 6 years ago, I worked with this guy that when he found out I owned a large dvd collection, asked to see a list because he said he was curious to know what I owned. So I gave him a list to look over. Anyway, the following day he showed up to work with a huge bag of blank dvd discs, he handed me the list and had highlighted a lot of the titles, and asked if I could copy them for him. I laughed, and told him no. I couldn't believe it, that he had brought in so many discs and just expected me to do if for him, and he didn't understand why I had a problem with it.

I don't ever let anyone borrow my Blu-rays or DVDs. I let my brother borrow one of my Blu-rays once and it took him over a week to bring it back. Since then, I don't let him or anyone borrow my movies. My mother is probably the only exception, if she ever wanted to watch anything.

Yeah I let friends and family borrow.. They don't have a problem with me borrowing their stuff so why should I. Besides - the only people I know who own a blu-ray setup take care of their own and other peoples movies! I would never, ever say no to family!
I have been burned in the past but that was in the DVD era when I was stupid enough to lend out movies to people in my class. Since then I've had no trouble. |

Nowadays, I'm more reluctant to lend out DVDs because they're so much more fragile. As long as they don't drop the BD in the garbage disposal, I'm fine. |

I think it's fine to politely say no and explain why it's nothing personal. I've lent out plenty of things... books, movies, music... and MOST of the time they come back a bit ruined. DVDs scratched, paperback book covers completely folded over (wtf???), music booklets bent, things "lost," etc.
It bothers me because I PAYED for that stuff, they didn't, so the least they could do is respect that fact. It might seem rude to not lend something to someone who wants it, but it's equally rude if they make an effort to get it from you and then don't even bother taking care of it. |

My problem would be the way they handle my blus, especially the steelbook type cases, ones with slipcovers, digibooks, and digipaks. I don't want any fingerprints, scratches, dents, wear, or tear. I would probably loan them out in a DVD case that I don't care about. my collection is sadly very personal.

To answer your question, no, you're not alone in this thinking, and HELL NO, my collection stays home. I'm a COLLECTOR, not a DISTRIBUTOR. ![]() Quote:
Once, when I got my first DVD, GLADIATOR, the Ridley Scott autographed edition, my gf asked to borrow it... I did NOT want to do it, but didn't want to seem selfish. Let's just say when I got it back it looked like a car ran over the case, the disc was totally scratched, I told her just keep it. I went right out and bought a new one. NEVER AGAIN. ![]() Last edited by The Dragon; 11-14-2012 at 01:53 PM. |

I've loaned out books, CDs, DVDs and BDs to "friends" / family and have never received a single item back from them, ... EVER! When you ask them about it, they get kind of pissy and say they'll have to look around to find it, almost without exception. Of course, that's the last I hear about it, never to see the goods again. I've learned my lesson and never do it anymore to anyone, period. Even my wife knows not to ask me to lend something to her family, because she knows it won't end well. It's also kind of ironic how the people who "borrow" your stuff think you're some kind of dick for even asking for your stuff back.
It's sad, but a lot of people show no respect to others or themselves. I don't mind sharing things, but when people act like a-holes, I don't want to be the one to point it out to them. I think the more important question is what kind of person borrows something from others, either to destroy it or keep it? |

Agreed. I've several things out right now that I've loaned and once I get them back, which I'm in the process of, I WILL NOT be loaning anything out anymore.
Currently my Game of Thrones Season 1, Apocolypto, and Breaking Bad Season 4 are in the hands of others. I just get tired of loaning something out and when I feel like watching it, it becomes this pain in the ass to get it back. I've had to text message my friends countless times "hey man...do me a favor and throw "said movie" in your car so next time I see ya, I can get it back" to which they reply "sure...I'll do it right now!" and when I see them......nothing, they forgot. And this will go on for months if not damn near a year. Ugh...I know my friends will b**ch when I tell them "nope...no more loaning stuff" but theyll get over it. |

The response is always the same when you ask for your items back. What I've come to understand is a person who asks a collector or not even a collector-someone who has in their possession, something of value or recognition, if they may borrow it or to hold or lend said item, or the cost, it's not because they admire it. The hate the hell out of the fact you have it, want to remove your joy, and ruin the experience for you. Why else? Whenever I've encountered associates who've come into the experience of something, I tend to try and celebrate the moment with them; not detract from their experience by attempting to remove the fun from them. WTF??!! |

Hello guys, I am from India and I found this thread very interesting and full of emotions :-)
As far as my situation is concerned on the subject; I am the very first one to have a Bluray collection in my entire friends' group. Many of my friends or relatives don't even understand what a Bluray is ! All they know is..the word DVD ! In past, I had bought DVDs on few occassions and I used to give them to my friends without any second thought. But nobody used to return until I asked them to return. And when those DVDs came back to me, there used to be lot of finger-prints on DVD surface. Even the plastic packaging were damaged most of the time. And at last, I lost 90% of my DVDs because they never came back or came back in a scratched-up condition that can't be played anymore !! Most of the bad-ass friends are like that only ;-) I started buying Bluray discs starting last June after purchasing a Region Free Bluray player and having an entry level HT set-up. I have been lucky so far, that none of my friends own Bluray players so far. So nobody near me is going to ask to borrow my Bluray discs for quite sometime ![]() However, I have experienced from my past experience that I will not lend my Bluray discs to anybody without thinking twice. I have burnt my ass to earn the money to buy these expensive Bluray movies I own !! I will borrow only to few close friends who understand me well enough and know how to take care of a DVD/Bluray disc. Or to a true Bluray collector, who knows well how to handle Bluray discs ! |
