Once again. It's how you perceive your collection. I see my collection as books. Can you imagine rejecting someone that wanted to borrow a book off my shelf? It would be really weird.
Depends on the book. I have an original 1st edition of Felix Salten's Bambi. Book is worth over $100. I have a closet full of out of print animation art and history books. Some of these are worth over $500.

obviously no one is going to be lending out real collectibles. A typical Blu-ray or DVD is not a collectible. If it has some mega-fancy packaging or some limited number thing going on, then yeah, no need to lend that out, but most people in here are talking about lending regular videos.

Yes, but people keep them so long that the case ends up collecting dust; so, now I've started to just give them the disc in a generic case.

I would rather lend out a Blu-ray than any of my hardback books. I've done it in the past and the pages come back ripped and bent where they've been used as page markers. And the dust jackets are not ****ing bookmarks!

I hate it when someone asks to borrow a disc, because if you say no you risk offending them and causing a slight, but if you say yes, it's almost inevitable (in my experience) that you either have to chase them — which also risks causing offence, in both directions — or else they return the thing damaged, which often causes me offence that they had so little regard for my property. It's simply fraught in any direction.

The last disc I loaned, reluctantly, was a disaster: I kept asking the bloke to return it, he kept saying he would and then not doing it, or else would change the subject. Came the day I heard he was moving house, so I got in touch with him and said I needed it back, and he said, "Oh, I was clearing out stuff before I moved, so I sold it." I was flabbergasted; when I said, "But you knew it belonged to me, why would you sell it?", he just shrugged it off and accused me of worrying about something that didn't matter, that it was "only a movie".

Call me childish if you like, but I've never bothered speaking to him again. In these cases it isn't "only a movie" that matters, I think it's the disregard that offends.

I would. If any of my friends had Blu Ray players. There's so many great films that they haven't seen that I feel they need to see. Alas, all my friends are still riding the DVD train.

I'd rather loan my girlfriend to my friends, instead of my blu-rays.

My initial reaction was "lol, no" but I've actually lent some to my parents. Even though they take f**king ages to get through a season of television, I know I'm going to get it back in the same condition I lent it. Friends, though? Not a f**king chance. We've had ordeals with dudes losing someone else's DVD.

I loaned a friend The Day After Tomorrow DVD in 2005 (not the greatest movie ever but one of my favorites at the time). I got it back the day I moved out of the neighborhood in 2010. HE LIVED DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM ME!!!

I've actually employed that kind of line to soften the "no!" As in, you're welcome to borrow my car, my dog, or my wife (not necessarily in that order), but I'm really fussy about my blu-ray discs (or books, or tools)!

I do fervently believe in the 'neither a borrower nor a lender be...' philosophy simply because, as the quote continues, "...for loan oft loses both itself and friend."

My Blus are kept under lock and key. Only a select few get to borrow any media from me, and those are friends who know how to handle with care.

I do, however, give away 100% of my digital copies, mostly to friends and this works out well since I think nearly every Blu I buy now comes with a digital copy. This way they get the HD experience they desire and my Blus remain safe LOL.

I discussed this with my wife a few months ago. She asked why I wouldn't loan out my BDs. Our daughter butts in and asked her mom "Would you let someone borrow your jewelries?" Discussion over.

No. I did in the good old DVD days, and some discs permanently left my collection that way.

if the movie is easily replaceable I whip out a spare empty viva case place the disc in and lend it. but I only lend to friends I know will take care of it properly and won't have to chase them down to return it. other then a easily replaceable blu I won't lend it out unless its my parents or sister.
