She knows, but in her defense, I did say last Saturday she could borrow it, she just forgot it here. Also, I just started getting into slips. About a month after I started collecting blus, I took all of the slips & threw them out. Then I saw how the slip for Aliens was better than the cover art & started collecting again (even though I have the anthology) As far as the BJs, I just have to ask

Also, the movie, case & slip are fine. I left the movie in a DVD case & brought home the case & slip. She has til Friday to watch & return.

A few random thoughts after reading this thread...
  • I am quite adept at saying no to people who want to borrow things. Why? Because I own a pickup truck, that's why! Good Lord, if you ever want to learn to say no to people, buy a pickup truck. It's astounding how many people ask to borrow my truck because they need to transport something or move to a new place. My standard answer, "I do not loan my truck to anyone, but I will help you move if it is convenient to my schedule to do so." I don't even own a "real" truck, because my truck is only a base model regular cab two-wheel-drive Tacoma, but I still get inundated with peeps wanting to borrow it.
  • Have you ever noticed that the only people who ever ask to borrow your things are the people whom you see only once or twice a year? I posted a glowing review of Stephen King's Full Dark, No Stars on Facebook a couple years back and some guy who had once been in my marathon training group and now lives 50 miles away asked if he could borrow the book. I simply told him that I never loan out my Stephen King hardcovers. I should have told him that it was because I probably wouldn't see him for another six months or so.
  • I haven't owned my Blu-ray collection for long, but I did occasionally loan out my DVDs to friends. One friend who lived a few apartments down the way borrowed my old DVD of Underworld. I had noticed when visiting his place that he had a habit of leaving his DVDs face-down on the floor out of their case, so I specifically instructed him to store Underworld properly. A few days later, a bunch of us were over at his place, and I saw my Underworld DVD stored out of its case face down on the floor. I sternly told him that this was no way to treat a Kate Beckinsale movie, or any other movie for that matter.
  • When I was in college back in the early to mid-1990s, I loaned my CD of R.E.M. - Monster to this girl who always hung out with my friends and I in our apartment. When she returned the CD, there was a crack on the jewel case and the central teeth that held the CD in the case were broken. This irritated me, because this particular R.E.M. CD had a specialty orange CD case that could not be replaced. I did not confront the girl about it, though, because she was so beautiful. Yeah, I know. Attractive people can get away with murder, and I'm part of the problem, because I let it happen.
  • I usually just give things to people instead of loaning them to people. I'm quite generous when it comes to giving books away to friends after I've read them. Blu-rays? No, not so much. I don't see myself giving Blu-rays to friends in the foreseeable future.

The problem is that even good friends likely don't have the same handling guidelines for DVDs and blurays that most of us do. So when a friend asks to borrow something, you risk offending by saying no or you risk damage to your movies because even if you state your handling restrictions he/she is likely to think that you are just too anal and they'll do as they please anyway. I've seen friends watch their children walk on top of DVDs left on the floor not in the cases. Do you really think they would abide by my rule prohibiting children from handling the movies?

I've heard that from friends before as well, and my response is always, "Whenever you want to watch a movie and hang out, come on over."

I do actually have a handful of friends who call me occasionally if they want to come over to my place and watch a movie, and I'll often invite people over to see a movie if I recommend a movie to them. This makes more sense than loaning movies out, and it's more fun.

I love to share my love for movies with family and friends. However, after losing hundreds...yes hundreds of DVDs, I do not loan my movies to anyone (and everyone knows NOT to ask).

I have never loaned any of my movies out... ever. It's less about selfishness (although that's definitely a part of it) and more about how people have a complete lack of care and handling for other people's possessions. I'm just very OCD about my movies and books. I just never trust that I'll receive them back in the same condition or ever for that matter.

I have a screening process.
Friends can borrow a DVD,
I get that back in a timely manner and in same condition it left me
They get to borrow Blus, but only my "eh Blus".
Then if those come back fine, they are allowed full access to all Blu-rays
(except Steels & Digibooks, I will give them empty case if they want to borrow those movies)

Slipcovers come off before they are allowed to borrow any movie though.

Have only had one incident where a friend's dog got ahold of a blu ray case and chewed it up. Friend felt so bad, he actually rebought me the movie (even though I told him I just needed a new blu ray case)

I've pretty much made it known my movies are a collection to all friends/family so they know if things go missing or get messed up...shit gets serious.

I don't seem to be as protective as you guys. I wouldn't let just anyone borrow my blu rays, but I've loaned them out a few times to a few of my really good friends. Always without the slipcovers though. I let two of my friends borrow Inception, one wanted the dvd copy and the other wanted to try out the blu ray drive on his laptop and I let another borrow my copy of The Social Network. Only one of my friends has a blu ray player and I don't think I've ever let him borrow a movie. He did loan me his copy of 12 Monkeys though.

Not anymore, not unless I know for sure that I can trust the person. I've been burned too much in the past with movies I've borrowed out coming back with scratches or not at all. I'm done with it! So in short, no, I do not lend out any of Blu-RayS AT ALL. My DVDs, sometimes.

I only lend certain people Blu ray's, I have one friend I would lend him anything to, and he would let me borrow almost anything.

I've never loaned any of my films out. A long time ago in a school yard far far away my friends would get my CD's and scratch the hell out of them and since then I've kept my media to myself.
