If you're referring to blu-rays, fingerprints can be easily wiped off and it'll be as good as new, but deep scratches is another story.

Fingerprints can be wiped off, sure, but they're also an indication that the person responsible wasn't that careful about how they treated the discs. This time, fingerprints; next time ... what?

I'm pretty open to lending out my BR collection. Yet to be scarred. In the past had books go MIA or returned with dog ears and ruffled. But I'm somewhat proud of my collection and think of it as a library for ppl to lend from.
Do ppl here do the reverse and borrow BR films from friends? Everyone I know is still in DVD land...I've reluctantly borrowed some as they pushed hard enough, 'you've got to see Anger Management!' Hmmmmm returned unwatched... Funny how I love pushing films onto ppl but can't stand when it's done to me. I do have some family that live far enough away I only see them once every 4-6 months. When they come around and see my collection my heart sinks a little. The thought of not having a title at arms length for 4-6 months...feel my pain! Lol I try to give away inferior releases to family where possible. Except the original Total Recall release...that was binned. Some things just shouldn't be passed on, but I digress. |

Very true about the scratches. I have some DVDs with many surface scratches on them that play well but the same can't be said of BDs. A couple of blus I own with scratches skip and pixelate like crazy. Very frustrating.

I honestly don't think anyone I know even knows what a blu ray is. I swear when people see my movies they think they're video games. Even the clueless employees at Best Buy thought the blu rays I was buying were games. Does that happen to anyone else? Lol

Brand new blu-rays can be defected direct from the manufacturer as well, and it doesn't have to be caused by mishandling. I have a few blu-rays that were pixelate, and there were no surface scratches on the disc at all. The only thing to do in this case is to return the blu-ray and exchange it, if it's still within the return/exchange window period from the retailer.

If my parents ask to borrow something, I oblige. They know I take great care of my collection and promptly return the disk when they're done with it.
The slipcover stays at home and if it's a steelbook, it goes in an extra case. |

I only lend out items that can be easily/cheaply replaced (like a used copy, disc only from ebay, etc.) -- and I NEVER give someone the case.
I put the disc in a blank CD-R jewel case and keep the box in a "loaned" section of my shelf. It reminds me they have it. If it's some kind of rare copy, etc... that's not leaving the house. As many have said -- people who aren't collectors tend to treat their own DVDs/BDs/CDs/Books like garbage so doubtful they're going to take care of yours. I also only really would loan it out to a friend I see frequently. I have season 1 of strangers with candy and the DVD of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo BD/DVD combo loaned out to a co-worker and it's been something like 9 months. I'll ask him about SWC every once in a while "When are you going to watch SWC? We need to talk about it!" because it's an in-joke a few of us at the office share being fans of it. It's less because I want it back and more because I want to discuss it with him. Each time he will make a 'sheepishly guilty' smiley face and confess about whichever latest TV show he binged on Netflix/Amazon/Hulu, etc. Last week was "Jane the Virgin." He'll start a few episodes of something that's four or five seasons in and then it dominates his TV time for the next 2-3 months. People who don't own a lot of physical media have a tendency to default to those options when they sit down to browse for something to watch. I can literally picture in my head a shelf in his living room with the jewel cases just sitting on top exactly in the same spot for the last nine months. I have the BD of GWTDT so it's not like I'm in a rush to get it back and if I need to see SWC I'll just ask for them back. I see him four days each week... he's worked there 20 years and myself 10. I know he's not going to disappear one day so I don't really care too much in this case. I did loan my copy of "Let the Right One In" (the novel) to a close friend who had it for about a year and half and it only bothered me because he can be absent minded at times and would keep forgetting it and I was worried it would get lost in the "piles" of junk that his apartment was filled with. Imagine a junk drawer as the entire bottom of your closet -- and the space under your bed... and at the foot of the bed, and each shelf on your bookcase -- the area under the side-table in the living room, etc. In that case the book had sentimental value as it was a gift from my mom -- so I probably shouldn't have lent it out but I told him that when I gave it to him and to please be careful. I did get it back and there was some creases here and there but I don't care too much about that. It's the spine that's visible and books are meant to be handled/read/enjoyed. As long as it's not ripped or missing pages I don't mind. It's hardly a collectible. Books develop character over time and I kind of like that. |

yep, let my friend borrow nocturnal animals and regretted it the next day and demanded it back before she could even watch it lol
but yeah that was the only time. i'll only be letting friends borrow my movies and only if i trust them enough. and i'd put the discs in another case! but if i wanna sell it anyway then i wouldn't care Last edited by meowingdogs; 07-05-2017 at 12:01 AM. |

The answer is a resounding "no."
I will allow my sister to borrow a disc only because she has a proven track record of not being careless with them and I know she would instantly pay for anything she damaged. My friends simply do not place the same value on discs that I do. Some think they are indestructible. They are welcome to watch them here with me or I can bring the disc and watch it with them at their home, but only I handle the discs. |
